Hello, been browsing a bit and decided to join so I can learn more.

My background has revolved around the Navy, Submarines and Medicine for the last 21 years.

My family and I live in Kitsap County in Washington. I'm completely new to chickens. My wife grew up with a large yard, with about a dozen chickens, two geese, a couple of ducks and a couple of horses. We also recently purchased a home after renting for the last couple of years. Our neighbor in our old neighborhood had a few chickens and some rabbits, Both struck a chord with our whole family. My daughter is wanting to raise some rabbits and get involved in showing them as well as getting involved in 4H. My wife and I would like to have a small coupe and run with about 4 chickens, for egg production. We are in a semi rural neighborhood but have limited flat ground in our yard.

Looking forward to learning more and trying to find some local chicken connections. Only been in our new neighborhood for a couple of weeks, but I hear a rooster near by. Need to take a good walk once the weather gets nicer and see what I can learn from a new neighbor once I locate them.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You have come to the right place for all the fun and learning! Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspect of keeping chickens including getting started, building the coop, raising the chicks and keeping your adult flock happy, healthy and safe from predators...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Most feed stores carry chicks in the spring time and sometimes they have bulletin boards where you might find entire flocks for sale or for free.

Enjoy this new journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. If egg production is your main priority, I would suggest Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are hardy and friendly egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed or hybrid you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Wishing you the very best of luck with your new chicken adventure and bunnies too! Why not drop by the where am I where are you section of the forum to check out your state thread for other chicken people in your area. Here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you

Hope your new neighbours are able to help you too. Hearing a roo sounds promising!

I'm glad you joined the BYC "flock".

For egg production, I would recommend Black Sex-Links, Red Sex-Links, Rhode Island Reds, Plymouth Rocks, Orpingtons, Australorps, Easter Eggers, or Wyandottes. All of those breeds should lay a good number of eggs.

Good luck with any future chickens (and rabbits)!
