Complete newbie to chicks and have many questions...

Thank you to everyone who has answered me. It is very helpful. Sometimes I feel like I'm a great chick mom and why haven't I done this sooner, but then I get another feeling when I think about the coop and daily care like what the heck did I do, lol. I really do think I'll enjoy it very much but still have to do all the grunt work first. If anyone else cares to chime in, by all means... I need all the help I can get. Construction is said to start this Wed.

1. I think both will be good egg layers. And should be pretty docile if you spend time with them.

2. coop size min. of 24 sq feet and should include a run or yard.

3. Spend time with them, handle them, when they get bigger give them treats.

4. Read a lot on BYC and type in "treat for chicks" etc on the search and you can find all kinds of options. I don't give mine treats until they are about 6 weeks old. Make sure they have access to grit.

5. Depends on the climate of where you live.

6. No it is not. I don't, I just have plain old plywood and pine 2 by 4 lumber. I am thinking of painting it to make it last longer.

7. You can put nests up on the wall about 12 inches high or even higher if you want. You can put them on the ground if you want and use a board across the bottom to keep the nesting material inside.

8. http://www.fwi.co.uk/Articles/2009/...-proving-popular-with-free-range-farmers.html I found this article.

Read on BYC, Read in all the categories! READ READ READ! There is so much great info on here! You will learn a lot and I hope you love being a new chicken owner!!
