And, as you mention a black Silkie, a link to the most active Silkie Thread

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

This is a link to the State Thread finder chickadoodles mentioned: Find Your State Thread

The Learning Centre is a great resource. Personally, I have also found the Topic of the Week articles to be a good resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive or the coop build etc, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Welcome! I was in your position a few months ago... I would definitely say to get a variety of different breeds. Personally, I have 2 of each of Rhode Island Red, Wyandotte, and Cinnamon Queen (red sex-link) and one Dominique. For one, it's easier to tell them apart. You can also see the difference in their personalities from their breeds. My Rhode Island Reds are inquisitive and smart; they're the first to run up to me if they see that I have treats. One of the two have started laying (all my chickens are about 20 weeks old) and she lays nice large brown eggs. My Wyandottes are more quiet and reserved, but they are quite friendly. One is a rooster; he really cares for his hens and isn't aggressive at all. The hen hasn't started laying yet. My Cinnamon Queens are more chill with a neutral personality; they don't really stand out, but are sweet. They are really dependable layers, as mine give me 6/7 eggs a week per chicken. My Dominique is pretty passive, but her feathers are so soft and she's very huggable. She hasn't started laying yet, but the fact that she's huggable makes up for that :). If I had to recommend one breed, I'd go for the Rhode Island Red. They have so much personality and are great layers too. Good luck in your chicken ventures!
