Complete Newbie with no chickens ... Yet

Hello all,

I'm Stephanie from south Texas. Right now we have no chickens. We have to get some fencing up first and find a reasonably priced coop but will be adding some ladies in 2018.

I'm here to read and learn to prepare. We have 2 acres out of the city limits and hope to start with 6 hens. I'd love a Black Silkie at some point. She'd be my pet. Lol! As for other breeds, I don't know. We're not looking for meat birds, just friendly gardening helpers/layers.

Rhode Island Reds are great layers but can be pretty mean sometimes. We had to get rid of ours because she attacked our new duckling. Our Buff Orphington and Americauna are very nice and both lay fairly well, though!

Barred Rocks are a very popular breed and good layers. Or you might like Easter Eggers who may lay, pink, blue or green eggs

Australorps (http://thewayofthechicken.com/index.php/2017/05/12/australorp/) and Orpingtons (http://thewayofthechicken.com/index.php/2017/05/10/orpington/) are great too. All of those breeds are known for their sweet temperaments and egg laying abilities. However, there is no shortage of breeds to choose from! Have fun!
