Curious about others opinions on this… Do you let your flock access to your compost bin/pile? And if not, what are your reasons?

Yes, sometimes ..

There are pros and cons of letting the chickens access to the compose bin/pile.

Pros: nutritious food for the chickens. It's fun for them to scratch around.

I was able to harvest reasonable amount of larvae and crickets from the composite pile/bin for my chickens. Those, IMO, are amongst some of the best natural food for my free ranging chickens.

Cons:

There maybe other creatures hiding in the compose pile. There was once a snake hiding in the pile, snake skin was also sighted. If not managed properly, you might have a problem with fly infestation. Stuff from your compose bin may stain if you have paved ground. There is no guaranteed food safety when it comes to the compose pile/bin.

There are other reasons, but that's all from the top of my head.
