Compost Bin

Any ideas on a quick and easy compost bin I could throw together??? Thanks

I just got three free pallets from the hardware store and screwed them together with brackets in a c-shape, with the front open. I saw it in a book, and it works great, so far! Now that I have a bunch of chicken litter, I plan on adding on pallets as soon as this bin fills up.

Another time I punched holes in the bottom of a metal trash can. It seemed like it should have worked, but I never got usable compost out of it, for some reason.

i got a fifty gallon drum one of the big ones and cut a hole in the side then when i need to turn it i lock the door and role it around a couple times. better then turning it by hand.

Well, let me offer my 2 cents worth...

I purchased one of those tumblers you see on t.v.? Well, I had some busted bales of straw and was throwing stuff out to the chickens in it, like veggie scraps, anyway, the chickens got into the pile and mixed it up so well, that I never use my compost tumbler anymore!! Chickens do a great job. Now I am adding the waste from the coop floor and the chickens are mixing that up in the straw really well. By fall I will have some awesome compost....thanks to my chickens!!

:yiipchickOzark Hen, that is too funny and a good idea as well, I think I have enough scraps laying around to make something that will work. Oh and I posted pics of my older guineas on Okie's post on the social side. Got pics of the new ones but they are still in the camera. Guess what? My mom has to go back to Springfield on Friday, hmmm, may have to visit Estes again,

I got 3 free pallets somewhere, and used those as the bottoms of a 3-bin system. Then I took some leftover wire fencing (freecycle is a good resource for this sort of thing)and 8 of those metal fenceposts, and made 3 bins that share walls. In one bin, I dump all our mulched autumn leaves, in the other goes grass clippings and in the middle one goes everything we have to compost, using the green or brown stuff from the outside bins as needed. If one of thsoe is empty (sometimes I keep the grass clippings in a pile next to the compost heap, so that I can turn the heap from one bin to the next, aerating it and making it "cook" faster.

Hope that helps. It was really cheap and easy, and I made a lid too with the fencing to keep the racoon out.

Thanks for all the ideas, I have three shipping crates from an implement store, they are nine foot in length, and I have at least three rolls of welded wire laying around I figure I can cut down the crates and wrap them with the wire and I should be set. I like the idea of having the three and mixing in of the different items, don't know that I will get enough of each to accomplish that but gonna give it a try. Thanks everyone!!!!

When we had a smaller yard I had a couple of boxes made out of recycled wood. Now I just have a heap. It dosn't look as tidy but it's alot easier to turn.

poppycat, that is what I am trying now...a heap! My chickens do the turning, no work involved. ha ha
