We give a lot of the stuff that used to go in the compost to the chickens.
People visiting us always get confused, because in our kitchen we have a container for recycling, a container for the chickens, another for the dog, one for the rabbit, one for the compost pile (not ok to feed to anyone) and a garbage can for everything else.
When we start a new planting, we just go to the chicken house and load up the wheelbarrow and dump it on the row. About a week or so later we till it under and plant. The stuff from the rabbit pen makes a great soil amendmend while the plants are growing.
We also thouroughly clean out the animal pens several times a year and dump the "waste" in the field to improve the soil for the next crop. The chickens usually spread it out for us.
