I purchased some "big reds"from walmart. These are actually european nightcrawlers; which are I guess the best for composting right behind red wigglers. I bought 60. We'll see what happens. I laid some cut up strawberrie scraps on top of the soil and they didnt really dig it that much, they wre just underneath it so i buried it hoping theyll fee more comefortable. They keep climbing up the sides and trying to get about, but apparantely thats normal for the first few days. I'm keeping the light on to keep them from escaping. They are also leaving the bin through the drain holes in the bottom, anybody else have that issue?
Did your European night crawlers settle down yet? I had that kind along with red wigglers. The night crawlers were awful for me. I didn't have much luck with them. I heard that they need a much deeper container than the red wigglers. Mine tried to get out a lot. You can try putting a piece of cardboard over the top to help keep them in that way. They eat tons though and don't multiply very quickly. The red wigglers does great for me though. They are very fast multiplying and I am constantly thinning the bin to keep from overcrowding. I didn't keep the night crawlers long, just the red wigglers. You might want to check craigslist in your area to see if anyone has some if you want to save on shipping.
So far, the euro's are actually doing fine. I'm not really sure about reproduction yet as I've barely had them any time now, but i'll keep you posted. I havn't had one try to escape since the second day.
