Composting...

I would break them for the simple reason that if you don't they'll rot in the shell and then when you DO break them... :sick
Ok - Yep that explains what just happened to me bout 2 hours ago...not sure I will ever get rid of that smell from my nostrils!!! Beyond pukey!!!
And to beat all it exploded all up my arm, leg and new rake handle!

I did some compost work out in the run today...I don't have an automatic sifting setup like @gtaus, but I did have something rare and amazing that he doesn't have - a motivated 10 year old.

I captured the story and a few pictures on my blog post about Early April Compost Sifting, but I'll share one compost glamor shot here. :p

Yep, don't have a motivated 10 year old to help sifting compost. Some nice looking compost in that wheelbarrow. I used a manual 2X4 wire mesh frame for shifting compost for many years. I would spend a couple hours or more shifting enough compost to fill a 6 cubic foot cart/wheelbarrow. With my cement mixer compost sifter, I can sift 6 cubic feet of compost in 10-15 minutes with hardly any effort. At my age, and without a helpful 10 year old, that was my ticket to processing all the chicken run compost I make.

BTW, I don't see any snow in your picture. My chicken run still has about a foot of snow siting on top. We are expected to get temps in the mid-high 40F's this week, so I hope that snow will melt. I got a little peek at some of the chicken run compost falling out from the fence line, and it's like black gold. I am looking forward to building some new raised garden beds and using some of that compost. I'm sure we will be talking about that soon enough. Take care.

Yeah, that's what I thought they meant too... I'm just wondering how well it would work because stuff falls through and gets stuck in the middle.

Like others have mentioned, a pallet compost bin will allow some material to fall in between the pallet wall boards, but it is never enough that I care about. If you really want to make the walls tight, I have seen some people line that pallet compost bin with hardware cloth. Still lets all the good air in for composting, but reduces the amount of stuff falling between the boards. Again, I don't bother with it.

Yes, the weather has broken here…hopefully no more snow! Highs should be in the 50’s all week with lows finally staying above freezing. Spring is finally here.

Of course, Friday was the 25th anniversary of the “April Fools Day Blizzard” up in these parts. 1-3 feet of snow blanketed New England just as we all thought it was spring…so I won’t pack up the snow shovels quite yet!
