I have one egg with an air cell that is much larger than the other eggs. Any thoughts on what this means?

The egg in question

(Don't mind the black ring around the egg. I marked them to keep them separate from my other hens' eggs)

Some of my other eggs for reference.

My thoughts would be that the egg in question could be more porous than the others and therefore the egg is losing more moisture than the others. Do you have good movement and growth in the egg?

I did see some movement but it didn't seem to be as much as the other eggs. My broody was getting anxious to get her eggs back so I didn't take a lot of time though. As far as growth, I haven't done this before so I have nothing to compare it to other than the other eggs in the clutch. Is there anything that I can/should do?

My advise would be let nature take its course and Mother hen do her thing. Nothing more natural than a broody. You can't alter the humidity or anything under her and she can produce the optimum conditions for the eggs. Not all shells are the same on every egg.

Good luck to you and your hen :fl

The whole process has been a fascinating thing to watch thus far and I am sure that I don't even know the half of it since the really exciting part is still to come! I guess all there is to do is wait and see what happens with this egg. Hopefully it still has a chance.

It has every chance. I've had them in the incubator with varying air sac sizes and they have hatched ok. Yes it is fascinating it never gets boring and is a real wonder to behold. I'm hoping for a broody this spring but non of my girls are cooperating!! Would love to see some chicks naturally out in the flock!
