I have white pekin duck, about 8 months old. a few days ago he and my female mallard became startled and went to run, when my pekin duck tripped and fell down. since then he has been limping and falling down a lot. he seems to do well in the tub of water, which usually room temperature. he is eating, but very little. he seems to be in pain when he attempts to walk, and lifts his feet up, one at a time, and holds them up for a moment before placing them back on the floor. I have not yet moved the ducks outdoors, so they are usually running loose in a room set up for them, or at night for bed only, in a nest box, which is cleaned daily. they both take "baths" one or two times daily, and have access to food and water throughout the day. I use chick starter, though had planned to change over once this bag was finished to the adult foods. My husband and I have been researching these symptoms as best as we can online, as I have not been able to locate a Vet close enough to us that will treat ducks, to find out more information. At first I thought he perhaps sprained his foot, as I could see no visible signs of broken bones or skin to indicated a major injury to either leg. His right leg, however, has a small amount of swelling just above the foot and at the top of the middle toe. the left foot shows no signs of swelling or injury, at all. We read where a niacin deficiency can cause weakness in the legs, and have since began using Nutri-Drench vitamins in his water, and will be getting him some food supplements as well. His food conists, in addition to the starter feed for chicks and ducklings, fresh spinach leaves, carrots, and occassionally kale or mixed greens, and grasses for their daily outdoor time, as i have been attempting to prepare them for outdoor living. they are not given anything with salt, though we give them unsalted crackers as a treat from time to time. the mallard duck shows none of the same symptoms, and she is seemingly healthy and full of normal movement and life. My pekin duck (Aflac), however, has been struggling for almost 3 days, and what I thought may be just injury, now has me a little more worried, given the research on illnesses i have been reading.

If, anyone can suggest anything which I might try, I would be grateful, as my ducks are much the same as my kids to me, and a loss of either one would be heartbreaking, especially if it were due to my ignorance in providing proper care or nutrition.

Sypmtoms (list):
weakness in legs, with a slight turning inward of his feet and legs
unable to run or move quickly
not eating as much normal, though drinking fine
instability in walking or attempting stand up

Normal behaviors continuing to show:
swims in water, bathes/cleans feathers
ducks head under water and ruffles feathers in the water
still attempts to stretch out and flap wings (loses balance when he does)
he attempts to walk around, though slowly and often falling down onto his chest/stomach
until yesterday,he was still attempting to mate w my female
he still stands fine, but falls when he moves or runs

again, he had shown no signs of illness or injury prior to the tripping incident a few days ago, and since then has maintained instability in walking, after limping for 24 hours. Again, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated by me and my husband, as we are very concerned this may be related to something more than a minor injury to his foot. Thank you so much, in advance for any and all help.

Most Sincerely,
BrittanySC

its probably just a sprain of some sort the best thing to do is just TLC. But if the swelling goes down and the leg is still turned inward swim himoften to build up the muscle

Sounds like an injury to me, Do you have Epsom Salt you can mix about a cup into a gallon of warm water mix well them place your duck down into it holding on to him so he doesn't jump out and making sure he doesn't drink any of the water since it is also a laxative. hold him in as long as he'll stay. then let him rest. Rest, water therapy and ES soaks maybe all he needs. along with nutridrench for support. Also no spinach it does something to keep them from absorbing calcium. I'll look it up so I get that straight.

Pekins being bred mainly as meat ducks before they became popular as pet ducks, do tend to have weak legs so it's a good idea to not let them get over weight and to make sure they have a high quality diet, which it sounds like you do.

Ms. Lydia,

I would like to say thank you for the advice. the list of appropriate foods i was given had spinach listed on it, and now that you have given me different information, i will make they do not get that in any of their food. Can you provide some ideas of proper veggie bites they can eat, which will not be harmful to them? Also, do you reccomend the use of oyster shell supplements or other food supplements to aid in the boosting of the calcium levels, given the tendancy for weakness in the legs? I have been doing the warm water baths, which do seem to help him for a couple of hours when he comes out of them, but have not applied any salts of any kind. he seems to enjoy his swim times more with it warm, and has even been adamant on the last two baths to stay in the water.... However, if you can offer any other helpful information, I will be glad for it!?

Most sincerely and gratefully,
BrittanySC

thank you for the advice, and i will keep doing the baths and watching him. thanks again!

Leg injuries take time to heal that's why you want to limit his running around mostly keep it to water therapy for a couple days to see if you notice any change. as far as treats. my ducks love romaine lettuce rich in B's they also like water melon, little green peas frozen and thawed, dried meal worms is a big hit here expensive but they don' care lol chopped kale and collards is a big hit in winter also I hang cabbage heads and they play cabbage tether ball while munching. Theres a treat link in the sticky's on the duck thread too. Please keep us updated on how he is doing. I don't think he'll eat oyster shell. I keep it out for my egg layers and my drakes, ganders nor roosters eat it.

Ms. Lydia,

He seems to do better for a bit, following a long swim in warm water. However, I was wondering, when he flaps his wings out, he is slow and a little jerky in pulling them back into his body. It almost looks as if he is either using them for his balance, or they are getting stuck and he is having to make them go in. Today, it is looking more like they are getting stuck in the air as he pulls them in, rather than for balance. What is this a sign of? What would I need to do, in order to help this? He is eating more now, and chased minows in the bath this morning, which is the first time he has done that in several days. However, the wing issue is a bit of a concern as it is not his normal movements. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
BrittanySC

I'm not sure about the wings but since your seeing some improvement just hang on and see how is doing in the next couple of days. this may resolve it self as he continues to heal. If he is eating and chasing minnows I'd say the wing issue isn't something to be real alarmed about . When is he opening his wings up when stretching?

yes, ma'am. He only does it when he stretching outward to do the little flap, to ruffle the feathers loose. he seems to be doing a little better today, and I am tending to think the slowness in pulling them into himself is just an attempt to keep balance, as when he attempts to raise up on his toes as he stretches them out, he is still a little unsteady. we have been doing the warm baths for no less than 45 mins, and it does seem to be helping. he seems to be moving around a little better this evening, not falling unless he feels hurried. we have kept them together in a smaller area to reduce his movements as much as we can without confining him to a small place. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help and advice, as it has aided in keeping us from over-stressing about him. i am going now to find some brewers yeast to put with their food to increase the niacin, and the vitamins in the nutri drench seems to have really supported the improvements we are seeing, so I am thinking there was a deficiency there, too. We are most grateful for your advice. I will keep you posted on how he is doing, and thank you for caring enought to aid strangers in the care of their animals. I will try and get a pic of them up here soon. Our ducks are just one type of animal we own, here, and they are much like our kids to us lol. So, again, thank you from the bottome of our hearts!

Ms. Lydia,

My husband and I are noticing a slight change in his breathing. I wanted to get your opinion on it.When he inhales, it is quiet and easy, in appearance. When he exhales, however, it appears slightly forced and he is making a whoosh sound on the exhale. He does this even in the water. Do you think it is just pain and discomfort, or do you think he might have something going on with his nose holes or possibly his mouth? he does not seem to have anything stuck inside his mouth or nose, when I am watching him, so I am not sure why he appears to be pushing it out, rather than his more regular exhale movements. Just want to make sure I do not overreact to anything, lol. Any opinions on that?
