My kids are crazy for them but I thnk it is just because they look so very different.
That being said, I just got rid of the 3 my daughter had because with college back in I was left to tend them and as I said - I don't really care for them.
They are the lap dog of the chicken world. I'm not a lap dog fan. Though Silkies were my first attempt at chicken keeping they taught me alot and were appealing to the non-chicken keeping neighbors.
Dont like 'em myself. I like girls who lay LARGE - JUMBO eggs. I have three pullets who were accidental crosses. Their sire was a standard Cochin/Silkie cross and their mothers were Barred Rocks. They are adorable, but the Silkie blood is strong. They got poufy heads, small bodies and lay small to medium eggs. I adore them in spite of the Silkie influence, though. FULL of personality, but I think they get that from the Barred Rock side.
I'm not into silkies either. I don't see the attraction, but I know they are very popular. I like the big chickens, like Orps, etc. that lay nice large brown or blue eggs. But then, I'm not into lap dogs, either. I have BIG dogs.
yes, some of the comments are so true. Lap dogs of the chicken world...I like that. Out of 33 chickens three of mine are silkies and they are the "entertainment" group. My little roo has just started to crow this week. so cute. I really don't expect eggs from them, just entertainment.
I, too, love the big brown eggs all my other girls provide.
Silkies are cute in a Queen Victoria kind of way. They always look like they're wearing a bustle and poofy hat. I think if I raised one, I would love it, but I decided not to order any because I read on BYC that they can get brain damage easily if anything happens to their noggins.
Okay, now for all the Silkie Fans to write in and tell us how horribly WRONG we are - I will go into hiding now!
