My chicks (speckled sussex, cuckoo maran, and gold laced wyndotte breeds) are about 3 weeks old. One (of the golden laced wyndottes) has a noticeably different comb (paler, wider, flatter) and the tail looks a little more curved.

Sorry about the picture quality (they refuse to stop moving!) but hopefully this is enough to tell:

1st photo is the comb of the one I believe to be male, the second of one of the other chicks that I believe to be female. Can folks confirm?

Speckled sussex and cuckoo marans chicks should have a straight comb, which would look exactly like the bottom picture. A wyandotte should have a rose comb, which is quite flat at hatch, and will never stick up like a straight comb.

The pictures aren't enough to determine gender, but your wyandotte does have a rose comb, as it should have. That's all I can really confirm from those pictures.

This drawing shows the different types of combs: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AH1Fw5FH7Cc/UNdj5caBXVI/AAAAAAAAALY/eOegG4xJf3o/s1600/comb_types.jpg

I will say that my rose combed birds don't have that spike off the back though. Maybe it's because I've never had a rose combed rooster.

Huh. The other wyndotte has a straight comb like the maran and the sussex. Maybe my other wyndotte is then not really a wyndotte...

Thanks Sphynx.

Well, sometimes wyandottes will throw the occasional straight comb. It would be disqualified for showing, since it's not the standard, but it occasionally happens. It happens much more frequently in pet quality/feed store chicks. So, I bet you have two wyandottes, but one just doesn't have the proper comb.
