Confirming this is Sapphire Gem chickie.

Hey everyone! I got six from a feed store and one already turned out to be an imposter but once I dug in I figured her out (mystic onyx vs the midnight majesty marans I thought I got). So now— what I believeto be a sapphire gem chick is developing some reddish feathers which is… unexpected. They’re on either side of her chest. I don’t have a pic yet, but here’s a few from the first few days.

Do you all think sapphire gem?

This one is not a Sapphire Gem with those brown feathers. It could be a Production Blue, Rhode Island Blue, or even some kind of Easter egger.

That’s the sticky part— this chick was definitely a day old when I got her , this is the list that was available at the time. Any guesses based on those listed?

Starlight Green egger is a possibility. Hatcheries often substitute with varieties not on their lists, so I would take that with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the info. These are my first chicks and I am realizing breeds are definitely not always accurate lol

Nope. And there are many hatchery hybrids that can be really variable in appearance.

I think she could be a Sapphire Gem still. Even Hoover’s example picture shows one with an orange neck. All blue seems to be more common but I don’t think orange or brown necessarily rules it out
