Conflicting info on layer pellets

Hens needing calcium will eat oyster shell to address their body's needs. Others will peck at it at first then leave it alone. Flock happy. The 'extra' protein in the grower will h3lp hens with molt and help roosters put on weight for table. None are harmed.

Putting all on layer forces all to get too much calcium, potentially harming chicks and all your males w/ kidney damage long term, while your supplements add considerably to your costs. Excess protein is only a real concern for ducks and geese, particularly when growing, and even then you can safely go to 20%
