I have a male duck that was raised with chickens and now he thinks he's their rooster! Hes constantly trying to mate with them and scratches their backs a pulls their neck feathers out. Can i get him neutered to curb this behavior? We got two new ducks so he might realize he's a duck and it didn't work. He wont have anything to do with them.

You'll need to separate them from the chickens, at least until your duck realizes he's a duck and stops trying to mate your hens. He can seriously injure or kill them because the anatomy of the duck does not work with the anatomy of a female chicken. If you do a little reading you'll see that ducks actually have a penis where roosters don't. The female chickens (hens) aren't equipped to handle a penis, and your male duck can and will mate them.

Are your new ducks females? If they are, he'll come around. Right now, you're right. He thinks he's a chicken.

You need to split him and the other ducks away from the chickens. To be blunt, drakes have a penis. Roosters don't. Hens aren't built to mate with something that has a penis, and him mating with them can give them serious internal injuries and even kill them.

If your two new ducks are female, after some time bonding with them he may be content with just them and you may be able to let them in with the chickens again. But if he keeps trying to mate with the hens, you'll need to always keep them apart for the safety of the hens.

Thank you all soooo much! i didn't know about the anatomy thing! yea one of the new ducks turned out to be a beautiful female but....he has chicken on the brain I will separate them. thank you again!

If only one is a female, you'll want to get two or three more girls for him and rehome the male, or get six or seven more girls for the both of them. Each drake should have three or fours girls, especially if you want to try to distract him from the hens :)

You really need to separate him and if possible as far from the Chickens as you can or put up a blocker so he cant see them...He then should like the Duck hen...Sell the other Drake and even one more Hen will be fine...Mine all do great with two hens....Three is always better....
