Confused.......how can you afford to feed your chickens

Quote:
In Indiana that would be health violation. If anyone got sick, you'd be liable here. People use to feed their hogs, left over scraps from schools until laws stopped it.

My dad said people use to take dead animals hit on roads home to feed animals. I have to admit, animals would go before I'd start doing that--or I'd have to be very hungry. Every time I see a deer hit on road side, I can't help but think my wife's dog would love to naw on that.........my wife would vomit.

who is going to get sick, and how? The chickens only get the good parts as we go through everything carefully. The restaurant is not using the eggs the owner is, just as if he bought them from me.

I'm not saying anyone would get sick. In Indiana, if someone did get sick and blame your eggs, you would be liable as it's illegal to feed scraps from resteraunts, cafeterias, etc. Don't know about Florida or any other state.

Bacteria-if present-will move from food to food. So even tho it looks good, could be infected, or it may not be.

True but bacteria are not going to transfer from food ingested to egg.

I'll see what the NIPI people say when they come out soon.

They could sue me anyway even if I was feeding the chickens manna from Heaven.

I trade one dozen eggs each week for the throw away scraps from a local restraunt. They cant use the thrown away/sent back food- they cant use the eggs in house. but the owner takes them home for his family.

We also trade eggs at the farmer's market and the garden stores for 'unsellables' If I can get 3-5# fresh veggie scraps its worth a day and a quarter work for my hens.

Our state recently changed the laws regarding waste food. Previously waste food was classified as garbage and could only be disposed of at a landfill. Now it can be diverted to large composting operations or to anyone willing to pick it up and dispose of in a manner that does not violate health regulations.

Hummm ... why would they do that?

Ducks would eat guppies in a heart beat. In the morning when first feeding your birds try putting a few guppies in a shallow pan with one inch of water, it may take the chickens time to figure out there something in the water but I bet they would go after the guppies.

I too am weary of trying to educate people about the truth of farming and ranching. The sensationalism and emotion driven rhetoric of the Anti-Agriculture is just to easy for people to be sucked in to.

Apparently it is much easier to repeat lies, such as "meat is full of hormones, chemicals, soylent green, uranium....." or "Monsanto is Evil" than to actually listen to the truth and facts.

Sorry Lazy J, the fault of the food is not necessarily with the farmer. Our meat IS full of salt solution & such if it's in the grocery store. Many foods are injected or sprayed with something to make them look pretty. They don't come from the farmer that way. There is good & bad about the whole system.

yes monsanto is evil

I don't buy any meat that's imported and try to buy only fruits and vegetables that are grown by US farmers. Most of the time if it's not grown by one of my fellow American farmers I go without it.

Most of the time the recalls have to do with how the food was processed....not how it was grown.

eggs, spinach just to name 2, both are not processed and from American growers, plus there are imported items that you might not realize, tilapia fish for one from china

Just reading this and sorry if this is a repeat, but the bad spinach was because the feral pigs were foraging (coming in off National Forest Lands) in the spinach. Devastating to the Salinas Valley spinach farms

yes monsanto is evil, I agree

We need lots of cheap food and monsanto does that, blah, blah, blah....Dont believe the hype

There is a collusionary effort between all oil and energy companies, shipping industry, monsanto, and all biotech and fertilizer companies and the international bankers that have controlling interest in them all, The same banking cartel that owns reuters, the associated press, the bbc, time magazine, nat geo, and on and on....they even run the white house, they have for a long time.

The price of oil is going up which affects food, since conventional food is made of oil by products and organic food relies on its cost for shipping...the oil price will continue to be manipulated to the benefit of the banking cartel.

The federal reserve (which is A PRIVATELY RUN BANK FROM OVERSEAS, RUN FOR PROFIT) is printing more and more money with no backing other than the US treasury bonds it buys up itself and says we owe them for. Every dollar printed makes the value of the ones you already have go DOWN.

They wont stop printing dollars till no person or country will accept them, China already wont take them.

WAKE UP
