So we are just starting out with chickens. And from everything I have read you should have the roosts above the boxes. Well we were given a coop hardly used but I think it was one of the coops you assemble from a box. It seems very stable and strong. Made if actual wood and all, but the nesting boxes are the same level as the roosts??? So the chickens walk up the ramp to get in and BOOM there are 3 roosts set up across the floor (about 3-4" off floor) and then the boxes right on the other side? Is this going to work out? I don't understand why it's made this way.

Good luck with your chicken raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know! Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! Glad to have you with us. The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions. The roosts should not be above the boxes because then the chickens might poop in them.

hello and welcome. I too have coops like you describe. my girls did use the boxes but preferred to roost out in the covered run part. I too found the coop frustrating from that roost idea. we only use it now as a transition point from brooding box. I sorry I can't help you more.

This is the coop we were given. It's strange. 3 boxes on the left 3 on the right. And the chickens walk up the ramp to come in and there is 3 roosts the same level as the boxes. I know the roosts shouldn't be directly abounded the boxes. In this coops case it would e impossible for them to go above the boxes. But I would have thought they should be higher. Idk. Oh well this is what I have to work wih for now so we will make it work :-)

Oh darn I can't post images that I get from other sites I guess. Oh well.

the coop I have like you speak of the boxes are maybe 3" higher than the roots bars. does it have a attached run area on it?

It looks like my link is posted now above will it let you see it? No there is no run. It's it's very close to the ground but we are going to raise it up
