Confusing Symptoms in Sick Buff Rock

Good evening everyone,

i have a Buff Rock, about 15 months old, that is displaying some really confusing symptoms. I wormed all my birds with Panacur (from the vet) a couple weeks ago, with her inside, separated from the rest of the flock, recovering from some sort of wound to her backside. Looked like something tried to grab her through the fence; the vet said it wasn't infected and was healing well, just needed to keep it clean and let the scab heal up. The day I planned to take her back outside I realized she still had worms so took her and one of my other birds back to the vet, got more wormer (also Panacur), and was told my other hen (same breed and age) had coccidiosis (they did a fecal float). Even though it wasn't "too bad" they gave me doxycycline for her. Fast forward almost a week and the hen that was on doxy is back outside but my other hen is really declining fast. The only good news is the worms seem to be gone.

She has smeary/sticky green diarrhea that is stuck all in her tail feathers, and she's feeling so poorly she won't even get up to poo in a different spot than where she's sitting. She has spent the last 3 days sleeping almost completely through day and night, not eating or drinking even when I put her favorite treats right in front of her. This morning she had what looked like a teensy bit of nasal discharge but haven't seen that again so I'm not sure if she just got her beak wet before I walked downstairs or what that is. Yesterday, her feathers started falling out around her shoulders, sides, and back. She doesn't seem to be pulling them out, they just fall out while she's sitting still, and when I pick her up it looks like someone busted a feather pillow in my basement. I checked her for mites and don't see anything moving around on her or builtup deposits of eggs on her feather shafts, but then again they've never had mites so I could be wrong. I assumed since I had her at the vet they would have mentioned if they saw mites, and they didn't say anything. I haven't experienced a molt yet either, so maybe she's just molting because she's been inside so long (almost a month at this point)? Lastly, her vent looks sort of yellowish and waxy; not sure if that's because she's just not feeling well in general of if that's part of whatever it is that has her down for the count.

I've put regular chicken crumble with fruits and veggies in a dish for her and have her on Corid (with vet approval - 1/2 tsp per gallon of water) because her symptoms started out exactly like the other hen the vet diagnosed with coccidiosis (lethargy/falling asleep standing up, watery green diarrhea, loss of appetite/not drinking). I've also been giving her the Corid solution via syringe once a day, but she hates it, and is already so stressed out I don't want to give it to her more frequently unless I have to.

I'll post photos asap, but I'd like to get the poopy feathers trimmed off first so I can get a better idea of what's going on back there and give her a better chance of avoiding any further poo-related issues. I'm also thinking a bath may be in order but I'm not 100% sure on whether that's a good idea. Again, I don't want to stress her out too much considering she is already so ill.

Sorry you are having so much trouble with her.

A soak in a warm bath will help loosen up the poop on her bottom.
Getting her cleaned up might just make her feel better.
Feeding her a complete feed is probably the best so she doesn't fill up on treats first and not each the complete feed.
Are you carefully when syringing the water into her mouth to make sure you are not squirting it down the right pipe?
I'd say that the 1/2 teaspoon is too low of a dose and that may be one of your problems. If she has Cocci at that age I would use the 2 teaspoons of Corid dose.
When was the last time she laid an egg?
Mites don't live on a bird. They live in the cracks and crevices of a coop/house and only come out at night to eat the birds.
A molt is entirely possible.
Pics will help.

And as KikisGirl said, she could be molting. And pictures will definitely help! Good luck with your sick girls!

Thank you all for the replies so far. Kikisgirl, thank you for the info about the Corid dosage; I'll change that to 2 tsp/gal tonight before I give her some. I've been very careful to only give her a teeny amount of water at a time, at the front of her beak, then letting her swallow on her own. I definitely don't want her to aspirate. She hasn't laid for a couple weeks, so when I took her to the vet they checked to make sure there aren't any internal egg-related problems. They said the temperature change and the relative darkness of the basement, coupled with the fact that she isn't feeling well, probably explains the cessation in her laying. She's been inside for quite some time, so mites probably aren't part of my problem (that's a relief!) Abriana, I don't have any VetRx, but I've got some electrolytes with vitamins, and some Poultry Cell. I haven't been giving her anything but the Corid for the past couple days tho because I couldn't find any info on whether it was safe to mix with other supplements.

I'm about to go get her now that I've got her bath ready. Hopefully I will be posting pictures in about an hour...she's easier to treat once she's more settled for the evening so hopefully I won't end up soaked through like I did last time I had to bathe one of my chookies!

Corid dosage is 1 1/2 tsp of the powder, or 2 tsp of the liquid Corid per gallon of water, for 7 days. Some mites live on the chicken all of the time (the northern fowl mite,) while some only come on them at night, such as the red or chicken mite, hiding in the cracks and crevices of the coop. Permethrin liquid spray or powder is good for treatment at least twice at 7 day intervals.

I took a bunch of photos to try and make sure there's enough for you to see what's going on back there. The spot above her vent looks pretty rough, but that's where her injury was and the scab just fell off a couple days ago. The feathers and skin around her preen gland are black...wasn't sure if that was connwcted or just leftover from her last dust bath. I was focused on getting as much of the caked on poo off her feathers that I didn't work too hard to see if that would wash off because she was a little stressed by the poo removal. Also, her eye is scabbed over...my other hen had similar looking scabs on the skin at the base of her comb so thought the crusties on her eye might be the same thing.

Also, thank you Eggscessive for the tip about the Permethrin. I will go pick some up tomorrow! Can Permethrin also be sprinkled or sprayed in the run? I just built a new, bigger run for them and I'd like to spray it before I put them in it if this little girl has mites or lice or some other bug.

Do not give vitamins while you are giving Corid.
Wait until AFTER the Corid cycle is done.
