Tell hubby that a 13W bulb left on for 5 hours per day for 30 days (2KW) will cost a grand total of 34 cents per month (even at the insane rates from our bestest buddies at CL&P). That's about one "egg" in cost per light, per month. Conversely, leaving a typical desktop computer hard drive on 24/7 will run about $31 per month and that does not take into account the monitor, speaker or printer power usage (they consume power even when they are not doing anything).

I have those same exact lights in my large barn full of juvies, brooders, and silkies. I would light all of my coops except I have 7 coops plus two brooders and if I light them all my DH will kill me when the electric bill comes. I'm not worried about them all not laying b/c I have so many birds and with the ones laying for our two person household it works. But, my egg buying customers aren't too happy

and neither is my pocket from the feed bill without the help of egg sales. However I still can't justify the lights to the husband so I skip it

But, he's such a nut he has me plug all things into power surge protectors and after use of them all except our bedroom TV is unplugged so it can't keep sucking power while not in use. We've saved alot of money since then. I think b/c his profession he gets laid off every year in Nov/Dec and the fear of income loss makes him overly cautious about little things like leaving the lights on in the house, NEVER mind the chicken coops!!!

I'm the opposite and am too lax that I tend to leave lights on and he follows me around the house shutting them off and reminding me of my leaving them on

If he would like to calculate the cost himself, here is the math:

Take your last power bill and divide the total dollar amount by the total killawatt hours. It should work out to roughly 17 cents per killawatt hour (KW). A killawatt hour is 1000 watts an hour.

A 13 Watt high-efficiency bulb burning for 5 hours = 65 watt hours per day. 65 WH x 30 days = 1950 WH (roughly 2 KW). 2 KW x .17 = .34 for the month.

If you have a barn and 7 coops I estimate you have maybe 10 bulbs involved so that is $3.40 per month - probably close what you get for a dozen farm-fresh eggs. Not bad.

Using a high-efficiency bulb is key - it puts out the same amount of light as a normal 60 watt incandescent bulb. The cost of which, in the same scenario, would run you about $11.00 per month (3 dozen eggs!).

High-efficiency bulbs contain a very tiny amount of mercury. They should be used in a protective fixture. If you accidentally break one you need to make sure you carefully clean up any residue. Hi-eff bulbs last many times what a normal bulb would and they burn much cooler too.
