Kristina and Sheila saw them from a distance. Because of the distance they couldn't tell who they were, so they assumed it was best to stay away in case they were on Mel's side.

Antero grunted and nibbled at some half-dried leaves that had blown in. He hoped she was telling the truth, they could use more warriors.
