At the moment I have chickens, 3 tribes (biggest is 14 chickens), ducks, a diamond dove and 5 cockatiels and I've been wanting to get Quails for quite awhile now.

I've done some reading on them and there is a game farm that sells fertile eggs you can hatch yourself around 3 hours from me. I was thinking about buying some and giving it a shot.

Though I'm still not 100% sure I'm ready yet. So here I am to ask for some advice on them and learn a bit more about them.

Well, we're all going to tell you how wonderful they are. I just started hatching them about six months ago. I spent a couple of months doing research first. I started with the idea of chickens, but they were too loud, took up too much space, and required a permit inside city limits.

If you already have chickens, ducks, etc., I imagine quail won't be a challenge for you. Join the Quail Hatch Along thread, read the sticky topics, and you'll be off to a great start.

I was wanting them as pets. We already have a lot of eggs from our girls so we wouldn't need more. Also, I'm not very good on eating my chickens so I probably wouldn't eat the Quails either.

Honestly, just a few like no more then 4 would be wonderful as I do just want them as pets and I wouldn't want other people thinking otherwise.

I read I might need a license but when I called about it they told me I wouldn't qualify for one as I just want them as pets and they had me call my local game Warden to see what they say about having them as pets. So far I've not heard back yet.

If you just want pets, you might go for Button Quail. They're tiny and very cute. My first buttons are hatching now.

Edit: Definitely check to see if you need permits for them, though.
I think most states don't require permits for Coturnix quail.
