Hi! :frow I have a 1 yo serama, named Darling. Recently she got very attached to a rooster that im planning on culling, and she has been alone basically her whole life. Now i feel really bad, because she follows him everywhere. I want to get her a friend but shes kinda spicy, and i worry she will fight with the other one. She goes broody pretty often, and im wondering if its a good idea to let her hatch some. (I have had many broodies, but never have had any hatch. I have no incubator as of now because i borrowed one from a friend last hatch.)

Some questions i have:

1. Whats a serama egg hatching rate? I really just want her one friend, so im wondering how many i should put under her to hopefully get just one. I don’t want her to get a egg and it not hatch or something after all that work, so im just a little worried.

2. Are they good moms? I just don’t want her to possibly abandon the chick or something, she is spicy.

3. Are the roosters aggressive?

Finally, my last question for now. Does anyone know of a place that sells some serama hatching eggs, but not like 12 at a time? I would probably put 3 eggs under her tops, but it depends the hatch rate to.

Thanks!

I don't have much experience, but when I let my broody hatch out 5 eggs I ended up with 4 chicks. My broody was one year old and did a great job. Unfortunately all four chicks were roos.

I have a ‘spicy’ serama too lol. I’m sure it depends on the strain but my experience with my seramas is about 50% hatch rate both with broodies and incubated. Both my hen and one from my mothers flock have hatched clutches. Both were good mothers but mine (the ‘spicy’ one) really only likes her rooster friend. She started getting persnickety with her chicks when they got older.

Edit to add about roosters. My mother had one that was human aggressive but mine is not. However I can’t let him near the full size roosters at all because he is very game & will try to start fights with big boys 5 times his size.

Thank you! Yeah, Darling picks fights with like 3x her size. She just seems to have a very strong bond with Vanilla. Its funny because she beat him up when he was tiny. That was why i was so worried.
