my daughter and i have started a big homeschooling project around chickens these last few weeks and i am kicking myself for the fact that it will be almost impossible for the kids (her, then i have a toddler and a teen) to see the actual hatch.

i have 32 eggs, and it's day 17 today.

is this feasible, to move them into a 10 gallon aquarium for lockdown? i would have a bulb for heat, thermometer and hygrometer set up to monitor humidity and temp. shallow tray with water/sponge.

what should i consider? i know i'll need a taped down lid with a couple of airholes. any other concerns or thoughts, or if i can get the temp and humidity right (tonight) and keep it steady until noon tomorrow, should it be ok to try lockdown there?

With all that glass I would think it almost impossible to maintian the temperture. Other than that it might work or you might kill all the chicks. Not good for the kids to see a bunch of die chicks.

I think it would depend on where you had the tank. if you had it in a room that was warm, draft free, and not in direct sunlight, you might be able to do that. maybe put something on 3 sides to help out with the temp...like heavy cardboard? it is amazing to watch them hatch, if you manage something like that you should take pictures and maybe a video! I know a lot of people have a separate incubator that they transfer the eggs into to hatch. I have thought about that myself! I only have 3 incubators!!!
Good luck in whatever you decide!

i searched and found some pics and it does look doable but i think dh and i decided not to risk it this time. but man, it's tempting, to have such a clear view!

I remember my first hatch, my grandkids were glued to those little windows. They were able to watch and were astonished at the births My incubator was on my counter in the kitchen so they could gather around to watch. They should be able to see.
