WalMart Rant

I used to live in California. Left about 16+ years ago, never looked back. Lived in the dark, never ran A/C, still had ridiculous electric bills, military family with 3 kids just trying to get by. California is SO broken. I have paid for others as well on occasion, sometimes it's hard to do without embarrassing or humiliating them (unintentionally). One of the first things I heard when I moved to Florida was "Welcome to the free world." It's tough for people everywhere right now, some places are tougher than others. All we can do is try to be part of the light and not part of the darkness, however we are able.
Which part of CA?

I come from SoCal. The Parents have said that it's actually more expensive over here (very far west Texas) compared to California. Property taxes keep going up.

I lived in Temecula. Then we bought property in East Texas on Lake Palestine. Second year property taxes soared. No protections from any kind of increase they want to do. Put that on the market and moved to Florida. Been here since, no plans to leave.

The property tax in California is ridiculous. It doesn't help that the governor made a law that charges people a fine for moving out of the state of California. Talk about a rant being required
When was that fine put in place? That's absurd.

My parents bought our house in the early 2000s. Tax barely went up according to them, at least for our house.

That got implemented a couple of years ago. It was when we were dealing with so many wildfires caused by humans, the electric company, thunderstorms causing lightning strikes and severe drought.

I looked it up and it doesn't look like they have a tax or fine for leaving the state.

I wonder if it was on Facebook and that's why my husband told me about it. Anyone that believes everything on Facebook is way out and I tell him all the time about not trusting what's on Facebook but he still does.

I was stationed in the Santa Barbara area for a couple years back around 1998. Housing was expensive, but everything else was about the same as my home state of Minnesota. I was on a COLA for housing expenses, so it was the same for me as if I was stationed anywhere else in the states.

I worked with a lot of great people who liked their jobs and loved living in California. I left that job after 2 years with a very positive feeling about California. Dear Wife and I have nothing but good memories of our tour in California.

Back then, I remember shopping at K-Mart for our basic staples. I don't think we even had a Wal-Mart in our area. IIRC, some communities put a ban on Wal-Mart stores because they had a business model designed to wipe out the local competition and then jack up the prices when those smaller local stores went out of business.

:old My memory is largely correct. I found this online...

When Wal-Mart came to our town, they wiped out K-Mart, which was the cornerstone of our main shopping mall. Without the K-Mart traffic in the mall, the other stores in the mall went out of business in a few years. The mall is a ghost town today. Maybe the mall concept had its day, and those days are gone. But I sure remember how you could spend hours and hours in the mall going from one small store to another. Back in the 1980's, the mall was packed. Today, it's dead.

I'm not blaming Wal-Mart for everything bad in the world. Most of the things I personally buy are not even available at Wal-Mart. I'm more of a Home Depot, Fleet, Menards, and Harbor Freight customer. I can literally go months without setting foot inside Wal-Mart.

Dear Wife splits her shopping up between a number of stores, despite Wal-Mart being the largest retailer in our town. We try to support our other local stores before going online to Amazon. However, we take advantage of the online selection at Amazon more and more each year. I don't like that trend, but even our local Wal-Mart is forcing you to go online to buy items they used to carry in the store. At that point, you just consider the lowest delivered price.
