Consolidated Kansas

Well I was out working on the rabbit hutches this afternoon a couple of times both before & after lunch up until a few minutes ago. I got all the wire put on the bottom of the one hutch & replaced one leg that was rotted. Then I was making good progress on taking off the two bad legs on the front wire part when wouldn't you know my screwdriver battery died. DH has the other battery at work since he has the other handle with him, aggravating! So I texted him & told him to bring the thing back home so I could have two batteries. I hope he remembers to bring it home tonight when he comes home. So now I'm at a standstill until the darned battery charges back up. I guess I could go get the old drill motor, the electric one, but it's such a hassle to put a bit in it. DH gets a tool allowance at work so he bought this really expensive set with a drill & screwdriver. He takes it back & forth to work at times if he thinks he needs it there, but mostly it's here. He kept it there for a little while just to look like he was using it. They don't really keep track of all the tools everyone has there in their toolboxes. They even will pay for wool socks for him he found out this winter since they work in an unheated cell at times, some of the places are heated & some aren't where they work on the aircraft engines. It depends on what his job is for the day, whether he is up reading the computer while they test an engine or down on the floor taking one apart. Anyway, I'm aggravated because I really wanted to get one hutch put back together today so I could move more rabbits outside.

Hawkeye, sorry to hear about your eggs. You might leave them in a little longer just in case though. I've got to go out here in a minute & see if my Ameraucanas laid me any more eggs today because I need to fire up my incubator tonight & get it regulated so I can put the eggs I've been collecting in there. I can't wait to see if I get any fertile ones. Surely there will be some as busy as these roosters are around here. The Ameraucana eggs will be pure breed, but the EE eggs will be mixed of course. I just needed a few more eggs to fill in since I only have two Ameraucana hens & they don't lay all the time. I sure would like to figure out which one is laying that gorgeous sky-blue egg, it's just beautiful.

Well better go do chores, the birds & animals are waiting for me.

I was going to ask if they were shipped. One time I had shipped eggs and they started to make and quit. I broke them open and found the membrame on inside unhooked from shell in places. So post office shook them good. I have been selling turkey and goose eggs and packing them really good i wrap each egg in bubble wrap then line box with foam and foam between each egg then seal little box and put in bigger box with foam peanuts or air pillows around it hoping to stop that. But I bet that is what happened "egg shakin syndrome" is what I call it

These eggs were packed pretty good in bubble wrap. But regardless of how well they were packed, if the box was thrown around-- that can't be helped by the person shipping the eggs.

So sad. All those poor little babies.

yeah, I have two batteries, too! Thank goodness! I am feeling your pain on waiting for it to charge! Yeah, I'm going to leave these in until next week just to be sure. I have no plans to throw them out until I am absolutely SURE.

MarcAustin and Hawkeye- It's called 'henbit'. Really - I'm not making this up!!

It's safe for chickens, rabbits, and people.

When we were little, my cousin and I used to pick the purple flowers out and eat the white bottoms; they were really sweet.

Marc, we used to keep the grit in a small feeder but the birds started knocking it over all the time. Now we just throw a few handfuls on the ground and when it looks like it's mostly gone, we throw more down.

Hawkeye, I think I know what you mean about the smell. I usually notice a stronger smell from the shavings the first few days. Then everything seems to get in balance and there are no odd smells. Occasionally during the winter, when we've had the windows shut in the coop for days on end and then there's suddenly a warm day, we'll get a bit of smell, but it's more like the smell of the warm bodies in a small space for a long time, if that makes sense.

We are here in Wichita.
A year or so ago, I looked at this site thinking....chicken would be kinda cool!
I really didn't have time to build a coop so I just forgot about it.
Last Friday (3/9/12) I was looking at Craigslist and a woman was giving away 5 chicks.
I emailed her and picked them up Saturday. (she gave us 8, 3 week old chicks)
Ok so now we have 8 chicks and no food, feeders, or a coop!
I go to Lowe's, get the stuff to build a coop, and Wednesday was their 1st whole day/night in it!
They are so funny to watch!
This will be fun

Well, I'm nuts...went to McPherson today and couldn't pass up the amazing deal on week old chicks and ducklings. Came home with 3 ducklings, 3 barred Plymouth Rocks, and 4 bantam chicks. The ducklings are already getting cuddly with me and one of the bantams that has "house slippers" fell asleep in my hands. Yup, imma sucker!

Henbit is tasty. When we were kids, we would pluck each tiny little flower off and suck out the teensy bit of nectar in them.

Sarge is doing great. He's learning "off!" right now, since he keeps jumping on the kids with those sharp little claws, and we're making progress.
I wish I had been able to get a picture of him the other day. He would keep disappearing when I would go into the house. I would go look for him ('cause I'm paranoid, lol) and he would be lying vigilantly by the chicken pen

It's been busy around here...about to be SUPER busy. Getting ready for the next wave of chicks to come in!

Hello All,

I am here in Wichita! Finally convinced the spouse to let me get chicks!!! Anybody know where I can get specific breeds in town or within an hour drive? I have been to TSC and At Woods and all they have are assortments

. I have done a bit of research to find what breeds i think i want, and would like to end up with them. Can't order online because I only want 4! I'm in a pickle!

What do I do if I get a male? I can't even think about that right now, DH would make me sleep with the chickens for sure!

Hoping to get my chicks this weekend, perhaps even tomorrow. Waiting this long has been soooooo hard!!! The minute he agreed I designed a coop and run for them!

How high should my fence be when I let them free range in my garden? I have a setter and a grey hound and really don't want to worry about them getting out of the garden when I'm not looking?

When I clean out their coop can I just throw bedding and all into my compost pile or do I have to do something special?

What should I have on hand before I bring my babies home? We have a LARGE dog crate and heat lamp. What kind of bulbs do I need? I have 60 watt plant bulbs right now. How often should/can I handle them?

I have so many questions, seeing as how I am terrified I will accidentally murder my chickee chickees, but it is very late and I am very tired!

Looking forward to being a part of this wonderful group!!!
