Consolidated Kansas

Sorry, I've either already committed to or someone else has volunteered me for way to much lately. I mostly skimmed.

(((HUGS))) and prayers for all who need it.

for everyone new.

Love all the cute pics, except for what I think were non-developing a few posts back. Hugs for you.

Couldn't resolve to spending the money on the Ecoglow when I first heard of them, so we compromised. We use those wire cube panels, zip tied with a reflector lamp and lower watt bulbs. Fine wire mesh along the inset wire panel. Really low for new chickies, flip over and then lamp is higher for older. 3 sided cube with a shelf, if that makes sense.

Back at the office here?

CheCouKan - Bantams or LF? I don't think 18days is all that surprising, especially on bantams. At least that's how it seems here.

for the rest of the hatch.

Anyone from Kansas either in the Silkie club or thinking of joining with thoughts on showing this year, please pm me. Need to get our state meet set.

Hi Avery - not happenin! I was actually just named the new supervisor in Parsons this last week. So .... MY new truck was not the best investment for driving back and forth to work every day! We finally bought the Ford SuperCrew I've always wanted, and then I get a position 30 miles away! Might have to look for something "little" to drive back and forth.

Everyone doing ok?

Ivy, when is your surgery? Yeah, I love the idea of the auto water! Are you talking about the cups or the nipples? I like the cups-- they will be able to really dip in and get a good drink. That is something that is in the back of my mind as I go along with my projects! Hope your wyandottes hatch!

Avery, I'm interested in whatever you're doing.

Okay, day 2 on my brother's coop. Today's injuries include standing up under clamps and hitting/scraping the top of my head. Soon after I put on the beam that will support the roof overhang, I stood up and hit my forehead on it. It broke the skin and looks like I got in a fight. Sigh. I started in on the siding and figured out the chicken door, and brought the window out and kind of eye balled where I wanted it. My plan is in place. :) OH-- and see how the pickets are down? I saw this on someone else's coop and when it was done, it looked like it had a pretty scalloped edge on the bottom! More charm! :)

Hawkeye I love the idea of using those pickets on the coop.
It was a long day and my stuff sold way toward the end of the day. Most of the people had left. I did well on the pheasants though. The Seramas didn't bring squat but at least I'm not feeding them. I bought a 100 foot roll of 2X4 wire at about half price of retail. And then didn't buy anything else until I thought I was buying a pair of solid white peacocks. They had reversed the order on the table and I bought a different pair. They are young so it will be interesting to see what color they are when they get their adult feathers.
My Mom is going down hill fast and my brother has been called up from Texas so he can see her while she is still able to carry on a conversation.
My sister's granddaughter is in a coma of sorts. They believe the arthritis has attacked her brain so they are sending an Oncologist who deals with more severe infections than a rheumatologist would. Very sad for a three year old.
Regardless I did have a good day.

I'll know when I finish-- but I think the pickets will be cheaper than using the T1-11 siding (which is $36 a sheet). These pickets were like $1.40 or something and I can get two out of one picket. (I've been cutting the dog ears back on the straight cuts) So far I have $30 invested in the pickets and I think that will do the whole coop... we'll see. Sorry about not getting the white peacocks! That would have been awesome to have! How old do you think the ones you got are? Hopefully they will surprise you and be really colorful. I'm so sorry about your mom, I hope your brother wastes no time in getting here to see her. If nothing else, I'm sure she'd really enjoy seeing him. That is terrible about your sister's 3 yr old granddaughter. Absolutely heartbreaking! I just don't see why our babies should have to suffer. I have a friend who's now 4 yr old daughter (she was 3 when diagnosed) is fighting neuroblastoma cancer. They are going thru hell, and it just doesn't seem fair. And yeah, I know the old addage-- 'life isn't fair', but it seems these people have been given more pain than they can handle. I'm not just saying this-- but I thank God every night that my family is healthy and the rest we can deal with. Safe travels to your brother.

Danz, I'm glad you did well on selling your birds at least today. I'll bet those peacocks are going to be gorgeous! We saw white ones for the first time when we stayed at a hotel in Puerto Rico. They had blue ones also, but the white ones were just so outstanding. I'm so sorry about your mom & your sister's granddaughter, how sad. Sending more hugs your way.

Hawkeye, I love the look of that coop already, the pickets are really going to set it off. Wow, I wish I had your talent for building. Are you sure I can't hire you?

Today has been the pits for trying to get my rabbit hutch back together. DH has absolutely no patience & he was trying to help me, but we ran out of time & he was getting impatient as usual. I went out there this evening to try to screw it together better, but as I was doing that one leg that I had previously replaced fell off & the whole thing fell. I got a pinched arm in the process of trying to catch it, so now on top of multiple scratches & cuts from all the things I've been doing I have an ugly bruise on the upper underneath side of my left arm, it smarts right now. Yesterday I got flogged by my ornery rooster, I think he was mad at me for being late to feed them & on my way to the coop with the food he did that. I turned around & chased him & told him if he did that again I would boot him across the yard. Then I went in to take care of my rabbits & reached in & was going to pet one of the does & she just came at me & took a chunk out of my thumb, ouch! So I was bleeding all over trying to finish feeding & watering the other rabbits. The doe was supposedly bred & may be pregnant & she is very grouchy at times, but she hasn't been this bad until now. I have to use the water bottle to reach in to fill her water bowl to shield my hands now because any time I reach in she goes after me. Geez, talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Anyway, Hawkeye, I can sympathize with you because I look like I've been through a war zone right now I'm so scratched & cut up on my arms & hands. I guess at least it's not on my head, not yet anyway.

The incubator seems to be stabilized fine & so far so good. I hope I have at least some eggs in there that are fertile & it would be great to actually hatch some so I can show my DH because he never has seen chicks hatch. He's kind of intrigued by it I can tell, but I have told him to keep his hands off the incubator & not mess with it.

Well we have asked to see our granddaughter tomorrow, but it seems that this is another dry spell of not being allowed to see her. It's been a month or more since she's been over. When I ran into them a week ago at the grocery store my granddaughter was almost begging me to come over, but I guess he mother has other ideas. It's so aggravating to me to have to beg to see my grandchild.

Here is a video I took last night after giving them mealworms for the first time. It was hilarious to watch one (Onxy usually) grab it and run! They all chased after her. I can almost already tell the pecking order of the chicks. Onyx (BR) is the most social, the first to go to food and roost.

Were do you get mealworms? Are they alive ??
I went to the feedstore to pick up some chick grit yesterday and they had a whole pen of bronze turkey babies. They are SO awesome looking! in a clumsy sorta way. I might get two of these next. Are they any more/less difficult to raise than chickens? Can they be raised in the same brooder style as chicks ??

If there is anyone interested in a full blooded Great Pyrenees pup for a livestock guardian dog, on the Kansas Farm Swap site on Facebook there is an ad there for a lady who is trying to find homes for 3 of them. She has been having loads of pups & dogs dumped at her place & she is trying to find homes for some of them. Here is the link for the Farm Swap site if you're not already a member: https://www.facebook.com/groups/312601348787264/. Just go to the site & you will see a photo of the pups & the lady's name & phone number. I don't know any more details other than what I've told you. I'm just passing this on to try to help this lady out.

I've been growing my own mealworms, but I saw dried ones at Orscheln's last week. I bet most of your farm supply stores would have them in the poultry sections. Pet shops sometimes sell live ones for lizard food and there used to be somebody on BYC that ships them.

I picked up a jar of live mealworms at the local petstore. It was 1000 worms for about 6 bucks. I started my own mealworm farm about a month ago, so most of them are either beetles or pupea. I'm going to be swarming in worms soon! LOL. I'm going to pick up more live ones just to feed the birds again tomorrow.

Today the chickies were moved to a bigger brooder! They took their first dust baths as well (in peat moss).. Although, I can't see how it's a bath - they are dirty! LOL
My dog, Darwin, now has taken up to watching ChickenTV, instead of DuckTV. LOL I think they really like all the extra space.
