Thanks Saphireblue! I'll keep an eye out for the stuffed chicken!! :)

Okay-- anyone know how to repair messed up tail feathers-- or at least get them to somewhat smooth down so she won't look so bad at the show???

This picture shows her back injury and some of her missing feathers. But when she's not fluffed out and preening herself, you can't see any feathers are missing or her injury (which is healed now). There are now little feathers coming in on her back injury.

Hawkeye, I'm sorry about your chick, I know I would have been aggravated too. Maybe some of the new eggs you put in will hatch. That's why you need the auto turner though since your hubby won't remember to turn it when you're gone, it's really nice, I love mine. I'm just adding my Ameraucana eggs as I get them. The two hens I have take turns, one lays one day & the other the next, never two in the same day, it's strange. It's nice that you can do these shows with your son, he'll learn a lot from that.

Danz, I'm sending you a PM so watch for it.

Wynette, I've never seen that person on this thread either since I've been on here, I hope you can find them.

Speaking of gardens, I'm going to have to get on the ball too & do something with mine. I plan to split up the large area this year into smaller sections that are easier for me to handle since my DH doesn't help me keep it up after he tills. When he gets that part done he just says, there you go & then I'm stuck with the planting & upkeep, which is the hardest part. I guess we're going to have to fence off a around the garden to try to keep the chickens out this year & that's something else to get done, it never ends around here.

We're still waiting on the car, sigh, hopefully any day now. When we get it that day we're driving up to KC for a break-in drive & I get to pick up my little buck Mini Rex up there, yay! We have been trying to get it arranged to get him down to me, but nothing has worked out so far until now. DH wasn't too happy with me that I'm bringing back a rabbit & picking up my rooster in our new car, but he might as well get used to it. Until he gets some other kind of vehicle that I can haul things like that in they will be coming home in my car.

Well everyone enjoy the beautiful weather today! Oh by the way, our cat ended up having 6 kittens yesterday. We moved them from right out in the open to under a bush yesterday & today she had moved them right back. My GP was out there barking at her this morning & I don't know if she wanted her to let her have the babies or what, they both have been very interested in those kittens. Not that we need any more cats here, we need to find a way to get some of them spayed soon. Most of the ones we have you can't touch, they're here for mousers & they do a great job of that. We have another momma cat that is going to pop any day now too, she is the mother to the one that just had babies, they're both tortoise colored.

Hawkeye, you were posting as I was typing. Your turkey is so pretty! I want some of those so bad, but I don't have a pen yet for them. I may be going to get some dog panels this evening, so I may have enough to build an extra pen. If I do I will be looking for some Royal Palm turkeys, just a pair is all I want right now.

Trish, crazy cat! I guess so long as they are not in the direct sunlight and heating up, they'll be okay. Hope the dogs aren't thinking of having a kitty snack?? I LOVE Seymore, and she's very friendly, I don't know if that is a breed characteristic, or if I got lucky. But she's a people person, for sure. The neighbor dogs (that are mean) came over this morning and were eye balling Seymore out by the horses. I ran out there and yelled at the dogs. I'm getting *this* close to doing something else about it. Maybe it was those dogs that got the hunk out of her back to begin with? I figured it must have been a hawk because they were around at the time and dive bombing my coop for chicken dinner. I'm soooo sick of these dogs!

WHY are my girls fighting ?? Today I moved them to a bigger house which measures 33"W x 50"L x 23"H for a total of 11.46sqft of ground space. This is more than a doubling of the area in the old box . And as soon as i put them in they start battling. They are doing what i can only describe as a flying 'chest bump' like athletes do in celebration. There is also chasing, jumping on backs and squawking. I finally turned the light off since when the temp drops they all huddle down together for warmth. What happened ? I thought they would enjoy more space? As I mentioned previously i was contemplating moving them to the garage already to start a transition, but i do enjoy the ChickenTV and keeping an eye on them. Here's a pic of the new house :

Marc they're just bored. They are learning how to use those new wings they are growing. Hawkeye I think Seymore looks awesome. You should see the mess my turkeys are in. They have all their tail feathers broken and caked in mud. Wish I knew some way of making those feathers look perfect. I wonder if Pomade would work on those feathers? I used to use it on this curly frizzy hair of mine and it helped and it doesn't show. It's cheap too.
We retaped Choppers wing and the first thing he did was jump in the dogs' water bowl. At least it is still on there.
Hawkeye angel wing is when the end tip of the wing joint is weak and the feathers start growing outward. It is caused by too much protein in a bird's diet. In Chopper's case, it is too much cat food! It is really easy to move the feathers back the right way but they won't stay. I read that it only takes about 5 days or so for them to stay in place but 5 minutes is hard to come by on this silly duck. It keeps them from being able to fly but worse than that it just looks unsightly.
I had Chopper out in the yard today and he kept running back to the porch and stood by the door chirping. He has his mind made up he lives in the house and the sunshine is too hot for him. What a spoiled duck. I don't think I'll ever get the tale tale signs of his messes out of here. It messes up the finish on the floor. I have plans to strip, stain and refinish all my old hardwood any way but it really looks awful now. I told DH if we just left the poo on the wood it would strip all the old finish off and save us a step.

I'd say it looks like you have two males. Females will tend to develop a saggy baginess on their underneath, between the legs. It's the egg sack. If they were hatched out last year, you or your neighbors would have been getting eggs by now. Do you ever see them mating? If not, then more than likely it's two ganders. they also have a higher pitched honk, similar to the sound (as someone else described) squeel-eee, but to me it sounds more like a high pitched honk. the females have a low throaty almost quack.

Hello, all!

I'm afraid I haven't time to comment on all the many things I'd like to, but I'm praying for those who need prayers, congratulating those who deserve congrats, and waving at everyone else!

Susie, did you say you wanted a Lav Orp roo? Was that you? I have one that is in need of a home.

Also, I have the contact info of a guy in Nebraska wanting Marans, and I thought you could help him. I'll pm you the contact info later.

Does anyone have experience with Chinese brown geese?

I have a pair and need to know their genders. I took them for the folks down the road from the farm, as they thought them a nuisance and at under a year, hadn't laid eggs or anything.

I know a male is supposed to have a larger knob, and one goose is ever-so-slightly larger than the other, but they are almost indiscernible.

No eggs so far, and neither is aggressive, but they are rather terrified of everyone.

They are like two halves of a whole.

If you can tell gender, I'm all ears!

You may not have girls if they're displaying that behavior. That's the characterist rooster fighting, and some roos start it within a few days of hatching!

Looks like Black Australorp or Black Sex Link. What little I can see of the red, is it a Rhode Island Red or a New Hampshire Red?

Can someone help me ID these hens, please? I only have one left and I've had her for a couple of years. She lays brown eggs and all her 'sisters' were black or black with kind of reddish brown feathers here and there on the chest/neck area. Then there's that girl in the back that had lots of that brownish red on her. Wish I had a better picture, but maybe someone can tell? Funny, I just noticed the one on the bottom left had a larger comb. It never crowed, though, so it wasn't a roo. And they all laid an egg a day.
