Consolidated Kansas

Congrats! We want pics when it gets hatched.

Well I'm hoping it hatches!! I was out there putting cardboard up around her kennel and changing out her water and food, etc. I cleaned out all the shavings in there so everything is nice and clean and I hope the chick can't escape thru the wire now. Anyway, after I was done, I sat there and just watched her sitting on the egg. (she wasn't concerned in the least with me cleaning up her space) She got up and checked out her food and went over and started drinking down water. I grabbed the egg and got a closer look at it. The shell is cracked outward like a bump in that one spot, but there is no hole. The membrane wasn't broke thru. I only held the egg for a moment, I didn't want to upset her and put it back. She continued to drink and ruffle herself a bit and then got back on and rolled the eggs back under her again. So now I wait, I'm certainly not going to mess with her. But now of course, I'm worrying about that "pip"... that's not really a pip is it? Not if it doesn't go all the way thru, right?? Sigh. I'm having visions of the chick dying from lack of air in there. Good thing we have piano tonight, I have to leave with my oldest child and I'll be leaving her alone most of the night to just do her job.

Aww, Hawkeye, I really hope it hatches!

I bought an hygrometer ($5) and a combination hygrometer and thermometer ($11-$12) at Petco today, waiting for them to come up. If they each read the same as the other, I'll have an extra set for the incubator I still plan to build in the near future.

Looks like I'm not going to get anything done on the coop today, just too much house work to catch up on...*sigh* I need at least one more of me to go around

Hawkeye - I hope you are right and it's the beginning of a pip! How exciting!!

So back to the saga of Quackers and Goose. We didn't quarantine her last night - DH wanted to give her another day to see what would happen, well, bad idea. Goose's one wing was chewed up even more and just as we got out there - Quackers was holding onto the wing and dragging her around.

We set up a pen and stuck her in. Had to seperate her right away because she tried going after the chicks as well, although they just few to the top of the coop out of the way. Goose seems to be ok, other than the wing (graphic image below). Do ducks molt like chickens? Will these grow back? I sprayed BlueKote on it (Word of warning - that stuff stains clothing.. grrr). Is it wrong that the birds can still see each other? Quackers DOES NOT like it in there, but she's making me so mad. If this doesn't work, we will probably have to get rid of her.

Quackers new home till Thurs.

The tip is all chewed up (both skin and feathers) and several feathers in, they are missing or in half.
Weird thing is that the other wing is not touched - either are the other two ducks.

I would move Quackers so she can't see everyone else for a few days. Out of sight, out of mind. That will give them a chance to figure out the pecking order before reintroducing her. The feathers will grow back fairly quickly once the wing isn't picked on anymore.

tweety, aww, sorry your duck's wing got hurt, but it will be fine. Yes, the little culprit needs to learn not to attack the others, I would leave her in there for a few days.

If that one pin feather is still bleeding, you may have to remove it. I know with parrots, they can actually bleed out if it's not removed. Just use a pair of needle nose pliers and pull it out, then it can heal.

Tweety, I agree you need to move your pekin where she can't see the others. As long as she is still "with them" she will still think she is boss. Give her at least a good 24 hours to be alone. I just have never had any aggressive ducks before, but most birds like to establish a pecking order.
Hawkeye, that is awesome. Congratulations! Yes I would call that a pip. It is good that the inner shell isn't broken yet so the "lining" won't dry up while the chick is still using up it's yolk sack. Whatever you do don't interfere. It's tempting but the conditions are perfect under your broodie. Just let her take care of it. You'll be hearing some peep peep in a day or two.
Are you going to let her raise it? If so, just letting you know you need to provide a low water fount for the baby like you would a purchased chick. The mothers will show them feed and water but if you don't have a small waterer they will either get in the other water and drown or they will die of dehydration. They aren't like parakeets or something in that they don't regurgitate to feed the babies.
I am sending you a PM as well.
I got my long pieces of wood cut and got the sections for the pens marked out and the wood laid on each one so I could see how my layout will work. I am ready to start building but can't do it until I have the nail gun available. DH is using it to set the posts for my game bird building so I am not about to bother him. He will have the last post in this evening I think. Not sure if the concrete will all be done. That is just for the building not for the pen. He is slow but he is at least working on it. He has to go back on night shift tomorrow so there won't be any more progress for several days.
But now that I have the saw set up in the trailer I should be able to get some work done in there.
I got on the mower this evening intending to just cut some grass to throw in the greenhouse for the goslings and ended up mowing a lot. The grass was damp because it started sprinkling on me but at least it looks a little better. Maybe I'll get the rest done in the next few days. I felt like there were bugs all over me before I got done. I had to jump in the shower again just to make sure.

Do we didn't actually move her, but we covered the cage with tarp so they can't see each other. They can just hear each other now. I hope that works because she's not coming back into the house. LOL. Took another look at Goose's wing and it's not actively bleeding (whew), in fact I can't even tell which one was bleeding right at the moment, so I think she's good. The other Pekin (ducky) has taken to following the other two for the evening. I'm sure she misses her friend, but I'm glad that she gets along with the other two.

Danz - You must have a lot to mow! I hope it's riding one! We put the grass clippings in the outer run for the girls and both chicks and ducks had a blast playing in it. The chickens scratched up a huge hole and then proceeded to dust bath in the clippings. It was hilarious. The ducks just ate it. LOL
