Consolidated Kansas

I only had a few minutes to skim though a lot here, and I can't remember a lot of who posted what, but I'll add a few comments.

Houdan-When I looked at the chick in question, that was the first thing I thought. We used to have Houdans. They were my daughter's favorite. It still might be some type of cross, however, because the silkies have the extra toe and black skin, but if it's a purebred with a top knot it is most likely a houdan.

Hawkeye-Congrats on the new hatch. Another A.I. success. Gee... I feel like I had a "hand" in it, too!

Does that make me some kind of internet in-law or relative? Oh,

for Crackie chick!

Trish-Congrats on the free wood. That's the price I like to pay. Sometimes it's a PITA to work with, but to me it's worth it. Now maybe you can get going on some of your housing. I've been trying to picture how you are going to house all these varieites! Congrats on the turkeys. It's sounds just like the turkeys I've raised. They make it out of the incubator, then I end up loosing a few. They get turned upside down and you have to help them up, etc. Maybe you can raise that black spanish up for your Thanksgiving dinner this year????? I'd take those extra eggs she offered. The RP's are popular enough I'm sure you could sell them if they hatch...and you've got a big enough incubator now for those and more.

Pike-What a doting chicken daddy. AC. I'm just glad we got our AC working for ourselves! Our house gets really HOT. We have lots of trees planted, but they are all small still and do not give any shade to the house. Big mature trees make more difference than a lot of people give them credit for.

Tweety-I think you need to see if you can rally some folks together in Lawrence and address the commission about their ridiculous chicken law. Gees. Maybe Hawkeye's brother would be a good one to have in the committee. Hawkeye-hurry up and get his little house built so he can get REALLY involved!

Danz-Hopefully your hatcher will work better now. I couldn't believe how dirty my last one wasy when I opened up the back. It's amazing how much dust and stuff accumulates in the hatching process. That's one of the reasons I really want to keep the birds hatching in a separate hatcher (even though I had two hatch in the turning trays yesterday!)

Well, Checoukan is coming up this evening. We will be able to spend at least part of the weekend together. My other sister won't make it. Her DH had some pretty major surgery and she is still having to care for him. Hopefully she can make it up next week and she can go with us to my oldest son's graduation at KSU.

Later folks!

Yipee just two more days before I get my pullets! Ivy I just sent you some more money. I forgot to pay for the last four. So sorry! My brain is every where but in my head where it belongs.
I'm still trying to get the hatcher just right but I am getting some temp swings. Nothing major but enough to bother me.
I pulled some pipped eggs out of one of the bators and it hatched ok. I had it marked for Tuesday but I have had 4 of them hatch already. Guess they were ready regardless of what the calendar says.
Pikeman I guess it's a good thing I don't have a garage or it would be a mega chicken palace. I have the door open and the heat lamps off in the brooder house right now.

IVY, yeah, well I may have to rethink which breeds I really want to raise for this year & maybe even next. I thought I had it all figured out until I found these Swedish Flower Hens & Cream Legbars that were just imported into the country. I'm kind of one of these people that like to get in on new things when they come out, so here I go. I got the Swedish Flower Hen eggs today, they came overnight Fed Ex, so I just got them unpacked & put in egg cartons to sit for at least 24 hours before I put them in the incubator. I sure hope these hatch well as much as I paid for these eggs. The Cream Legbar eggs won't come until the first part of June because I didn't want them coming when we're going to be gone over Memorial Day. Anyway, I won't know what I have in the blue wheaten Ameraucanas for a few months until they mature anyway. When I get this breeder coop built I will have room for 4 different breeds in there. I'm thinking of just leaving the Ameraucanas where they are in their own pen & then I could have one more breed in the new coop that way, we'll see. I may be doing what KarenS is doing & building breeder pens with dog houses, that is what I have for my Ameraucanas. I know we had a mild winter last winter, but those birds were hardly in that dog house, they roosted out on the roost over the top of the house about all winter. I had tarps over all the sides but the gate side, so they had some protection from the wind at least.

I wonder what the deal is about the turkeys that they flip over like that? They get upside down & then it's hard for them to get turned right side up. The Spanish does it & the Royal Palms too. I didn lose one little Royal Palm, but the other 4 seem to be doing OK, other than the flipping thing. I'm going to have to go do some reading & see if there is anything else I need to do for them. They're still in the hatcher for now since they're not stable enough to go out to the brooder. Yeah, I probably will get the extra eggs so I can have enough to get what I'm wanting hopefully if they make it & sell a few.

KarenS, my reserve water bucket & system came today & I got it all hooked up. Do you use the lid on the bucket or not? I just sat it over the top so the water doesn't get anything in it, but didn't fasten it on. I would think it would be really hard to get off when you need to fill the thing. How are your turkeys doing?

It's been too hot for me to go out & work yet today & I finally broke down this afternoon & turned on the air conditioner. My hubby wouldn't turn it on until he was affected by it being too hot to sleep. It doesn't bother him much for me to be sweating to death in here while he's at work. I just get to a point though where I've had it & that' it & I reached it today. I was sitting in here with sweat running off of me & that did it. He probably won't be too happy when he comes home & it's on, but too bad. Maybe it will cool off in a couple days & we can turn it off again, but for now it's on. I like the fresh air too, but not when it's so hot.

IVY, I went & started doing some reading on the flipping problem on the turkey poults, it seems it is a neurological problem & if not treated will be fatal. Here is what I found on this site for treatment:

HERE IS WHAT TO DO FOR THE NERVOUS SYSTEM OF THE POULTS

now the
natural probiotic recipe is is:
3 tbsp of dry crumbles
4 tbsp of milk, sweet, sour, or buttermilk or a mixture of all or some
1 tbsp of yoguart of non flavored yoguart ( no artificial sweetmer)
mix good
AFTER PUTTING VIT'S IN
PUT 1 TBSP OF APPLE SAUCE FOR THE WET MASH PROBIOTIC

NOW THE IMPORTANT INGRIEDIENT FOR EACH POULT FED
and add 1- 400 mg of Vit E by cutting the end off the vit E capsule for each poult fed this wet mash
putting it in the wet mash

OR FOR each poult your treating
so for each chick use 2 tsp of mixture and 1-1000 mg of Vit E

twice a day for them till they are acting better
probably two weeks

and feed each poult
2 tsp full of the wet mash probiotic and what they will clean up in 20-30 minutes
then clean wet feeders and restock dry crumbles

do this twice a day for a week
till the poults manure is right
then quit the Vit E make just the wet mash probiotic
then once a week for life

do not use ACV with medication

2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per gallon of the poults water so their gut flora wil be regulated
they should have this at least 3-5 days a week
then three days aweek after they are better
the vit's are neccessary to clean up the damaged gut problem

I think it's worth a try, so I will give it a shot & see if I can save them. It's a shame to see them so perky & think that they may die soon, sad.

Yeah guy, I agree that it's absolutely ridiculous about the orchlens' thing. I'm curious to see what Renee's take on it is. I know she's very active here in the community!
For those that have asked, I am feeling much better. I think it was the quiche that I ate. I love eggs. Love them, but my body reacts to them sometimes in ways that I really don't like. Kinda ironic that I'm raising chickens and ducks for eggs, huh? LOL

Trish, those are adorable! Too bad I can't go that route.

We have had our air on for ages as well. DH's allergies don't allow us to keep the windows open, so I just suffer with the high bills. I prefer it a lot warmer than he does, so I'm usually the one wearing sweats and a sweatshirt around the house when it's a 100 degrees outside. oh well.. it's been 15 years of it, so i'm used to it.

Got a question. A good friend here in Lawrence is looking for a breeding age White Laced Red Cornish Rooster. Anyone have one of those they are wanting to sell, or know anyone that will be selling one? She ordered three and the roo that she order isn't a roo at all. She's upset and I told her I'd pass the word along that she's looking for one. I'll post it on the FB swap page as well. She's willing to drive anywhere in KS to pick one up.

Well, BUMMER BUMMER BUMMER! I just talked to Checoukan. She is sicker than a dog so she's not going to make it up this weekend.

Since my other sister won't make it, either, I guess I will just have to entertain myself this weekend.

Oh, well. My DH does a good job of entertaining (goats, firecrackers, underwear....etc.)

I was hoping to get some space opened up when she took all her birds.

Danz-I will PM you.

Well, my other sister is coming up next weekend (hopefully) and my son's graduation is then, so maybe Checoukan can make it up and we can all go to his graduation together.

I finally got the little hens moved to the coop outside. I was able to get the ark divided in half without too much pain. Now the little ones (Sage, Paprika and Saffron) are spending their first night in their new house.

Oh, I had some help from my son. He is holding Sage a 9 week old Australorp hen.

Karen- Those duck pictures are so cute. Aren't they funny all swimming together like grown up ducks!! I wish we had a pond, maybe someday.

Hawkeye-That is crazy about your repaired egg! Can't believe it is growing! So glad your little one hatched all on its own too.

Trish- Hope your poults come out of this ok!! They are so sweet looking.

Sorry everyone else, I can't remember what all I read....

Spent most of the day installing invisible fence for the dogs. It is taking forever. We rented an edger and thank heavens because it is a wonderful tool to have for this project. Laying the wire is taking a lot longer than I thought it would but we will get it done. I am so excited to start leaving the dogs out and not have to worry about the puppy in the road! I don't know where Molly has been taking her for field trips but they have been meandering a lot these days!

Question for all you GP folks. When do you start leaving your pups out overnight? I am very nervous about it so I think I will wind up penning her up at night for too long unless I have a rough age to shoot for. I can't believe how big she is getting!
