Consolidated Kansas

Glad you got him. I would be so upset if coyote got in here. The only time I had one come it was on a hot summer day when the dogs were asleep in the shade. It was a young one who hadn't learned yet that this wasn't the place to come around.
Marshmallow is gun shy too. If someone shoots she runs and tries to get in the house. You know these dogs just aren't your normal house dogs. Fluff and the pup just sit there like nothing happened. I have a neighbor that poaches deer from the road and then claims all these prizes for the biggest buck. Then he sells hunting trips for deer for like $2500 a pop. He is known to hunt on land that isn't his as well. My dogs chase deer off if they see them even if they are a half mile away. I suspect that she must have chased off another one of his road poaching bucks and so he shot at her instead.
I guess I am going to have to replace the hose on my auto waterer. I got everything working great on the hatcher and the stupid hose got crimped again. That darned thing is messing up my hatches big time.
I need to figure out what to wear to church. Then call my Dad and make sure he is going. I have three big plates full of deviled eggs. Surely that will be more than plenty.
When I get home I have to catch ducks which is far from my favorite past time. The babies aren't bad but the adults are a true pain. I am sure my back is going to give out.
Cherwill, I drive myself so hard that if I get stuck doing nothing I get uptight and feel guilty. Even though it seems like I never get anything done.
DH has made some great progress on the building. I do wish he'd drill those post holes for the fence though. It looks like rain the next few days and then he'll have to be back at work on night shift again. I hate to push him because if he gets disgusted at me he'll quit working. I could have had them done 100 times over but he doesn't believe I can do it perfect.

ARGH!!!! I have things eating my garden!!!! I need to make a bird proof cage to keep our wild birds out! They are taking whole seedlings out of the bed. I also need to figure out how to prevent bugs from eating the holes in my broccoli plant, my cabbage, my collards...well all of my leafy green things. I expected problems, Im just irritated that the eating fiends couldn't wait until after finals week. Now all I want to do is go out and find the culprits and build bird proof garden cages, but alas, this semester is full of hard tests and painful studying! OH LIFE...well thanks for reading my rant, I just had to do it!

Roman- I feel your studying pain.

Ivy- Nice shot!! Way to go! Darned coyotes, what to they think this is anyway....

Danz- Best of luck on getting your pen done. I am sure your DH will get them done before the rain.

Thanks everyone for advice on the pup. I think I will keep her up for a bit longer but Molly is good at "telling" her when to stay put and when she can come along. I think it is interesting that she used to leave the pup in the tall grass and now she is taking her on expeditions. Molly is gun shy too! Maybe it is like herding dogs and they have bred the "bite" out of them so much that you see a lot of hyper sensitivity to loud sounds. Like most heelers, shepherds etc are firework and thunderstorm phobic. It is actually a difference in the brain that creates an inability to inhibit response to loud sounds. The puppy is terrified of thunder still. Just a thought.

I have enjoyed reading about the new chicks, crowing hens, new puppies and reading that I am definitely not alone in pushing myself to exhaustion :)

I guess it would help if I introduce myself so you know who has been reading your news. I am a SpEd teacher , a single mom with 3 kids - I bio and 2 added by choice from China with special needs. We live with a housemate ( fellow SpEd teacher) who has 2 kids, 2 standard poodles, and 3 papipoos plus our expanding chicken family of 2 BCM, 3EE, 1 blue/ lavender true Ameracauna, 1 white rock, 3 silkies, 2 belgian D'uccles and now, hopefully, 2 new Polish < wk old chicks :)
We also have a cuckoo Marans, a Salmon Favarolle and a Cochin -cockerels, who need new homes. None of our pullets are old enough to lay. The oldest is 13 weeks. We originally wanted just 5-6 pullets. Chicken math struck though...:) We discovered that chickens aren't just chickens.

I particularly enjoy them and find it very therapeutic after a long day to just watch them gobble up their feed or yogurt etc... They all are so comical and have such unique personalities :). I thought I might be losing my mind until I found this board :)

Hello!!! I really admire SpEd teachers, I wanted to be one when I was younger, I just happened to join the military instead. Know I would like to be a pediatric nurse and children's advocate!

Hello and

It sounds like you've got a pretty good start on your menagerie and chicken math has been at work! Feel free to join in and ask any questions that come up.

ARGH! I hate poachers. We have had so much trouble with that here, too.

Maybe there is just something about the GP's and being gunshy. Buddy hates any kind of loud noise and will take off and hide in the woods. Even when Mike is working in the shop and makes too much noise such as with some kind of power equipment Buddy will hide.

Thanks, Josie. It really wasn't much of a shot. I couldn't believe the darn thing was right up that close to everything. I was kind of in a hurry, though. I didn't want it to take off and run away before I got a shot at it. You have to remember I had just woke up, grabbed my glasses and walked to the window. I grabbed the gun and went out on the deck barefooted and still in my pajamas. Thank goodness I wear pajamas

My DH got me back for teasing him about shooting off firecrackers to scare the goats while he was in his underwear. He didn't think it mattered if I wore pajamas or not. He said I could have walked out there naked. The coyote would have taken one look at me naked and it would have scared it to death! I wouldn't even have to shoot. It would have died on the spot and saved some ammo.

Danz, sorry about your auto waterer. :( I hope that is the only thing wrong. It doesn't sound like a cheap fix, though. Bummer. Hope everyone eats up those eggs! I LOVE deviled eggs!! LOVE them!!!

MedaWinks-- sounds like you have a really fun and interesting dynamic at home with the kids and house mate. Do the kids really like the chickens? Funny how you started off aiming for 5 birds and ended up with close to 20! LOL Yeah, that's pretty much how it works.

Welcome to the Kansas thread! Definitely jump in on any discussions that are going on!

OKay-- so I have NEWS!!! That crazy chick that was a day too early hatched a bit ago. It's another Splash I think! Sheesh!! I mean, I love splash, but wow! It also have a vaulted head, but not a very big one like the others. It's still wet and screeching in there, so I haven't looked it over to see what kind of quality it might be. THIS IS SO MUCH FUN!!! Totally addicting!!!! I can't wait to see what these little fluffies end up looking like! This one is LOUD!!! It's screeching/peeping non stop in the incubator. Usually that incubator is so tight, I can't hear a thing in there.

I skipped church this morning. I'm still not 100%. Sent my DH with all 3 kids to church instead. I get a break, but I've been out mowing. Which is actually one of my favorite things to do. Time to myself and I get to THINK without being interrupted. hehe!! I ran out out of gas though. DH is bringing more home for me. I knew I was low, so I sent him to church with a can. Okay, well, I need to go clean out waterer's and feed, etc....
