Personnally I don't do anything when they have an opening like that. Others may disagree. The only thing I might do is put a little betadine on it. Sometimes you can get bacteria that enters when the opening is still fresh. Otherwise I would let it heal and many times that's what they do.

On the chick setting back on it's hauches, about the only thing you can do is take it in your hand and bend it's legs so they are in a natural position. Work the joints back and forth, and then hold it for a good while with it's legs and body in a natural position. You will probably have to do this several times a day, as often as is practical for you. Make sure it is able to get a drink (with vitamins and minerals) and if he can't be sure to give him a drink.

Chick physical therapy. Speaking of which, I need to get ready for mine.

Last night my DH went back to work for the first time since his heart problems. He did pretty good. He still had some chest pain, but no worse than what he has been having all along. It's been kind of a pain because it has been so unpredictable.

I have my appointment with my Dr. this week. I don't know if I will be released to go back to work or not. My knee is doing great, but they stretched or damaged a nerve that goes to my foot, and I can only stand on my feet for a short time. My foot causes me more pain than my knee. Hope it gets better soon. I need to get back to work.

Hawkeye- I have given sticky chicks a gentle bath in diluted dawn shampoo in a cup and rinsed them really well after. I you use a washcloth in a circular motion it seems to help loosen the gunk that is dried to them. I hate to do it but I worry that if they don't fluff up they will be chillier than the other chicks. Poor baby, I hate it when that happens. Glad the little bugger is ok!

The pony is of unknown age and after his behavior the last few days I think he has been bred before because he clearly knows he is all boy!!!! His little brother is much sweeter and mellower. I am hoping that cutting him just "takes the edge off" I don't expect an overnight cure but he is belligerent right now so any improvement will be welcome!! He knows every trick in the book, charges, rears, slams into you but he is learning that those things don't fly at our house!

Medawinks, Sorry I didn't answer sooner. Yes I think the kids would enjoy going to the swap at Premier. There are usually chicks and lots of rabbits. I've even seen some people with dogs selling there from time to time. The worst part would be not buying things for them.
Prairie, Sorry I missed your call yesterday. I was out until dark. Sending you a PM
Hawkeye how's your chicks this morning. I don't have very good luck with those sticky chicks but a few of them make it ok. I'm dealing with some ducks with the same issue right now. They all came from this one incubator I am having trouble regulating. Makes me so mad to loose perfectly good healthy ducks cause they get stuck in the shell.
I decided to unhook my pond pump, put different fittings on it and pump out the mandarin pond yesterday. It was really nasty. I just pumped all that water to the garden since we didn't get rain. But I had to keep moving the hose to get it where I wanted it. Then I refilled the duck pond and put algae treatment in it. Hopefully I can treat it and keep the algae level down a little this time. I put a water lily in the pond to help use some of those nutrients the ducks produce but the ducks keep eating off the leaves when they get to the surface. I guess I should buy some endive or something to float on the water and take their minds off the lily leaves. I still need to give the garden a thorough watering but I hate to get the part I still need to plant peppers and stuff in all wet and muddy. This soil is awful and you sink in it and it clings when you get it wet. Even with amendments it's terrible. I got a couple more grape vines planted on one side of the Mandarin pen so I need to trim around them and then make some kind of protective temporary fence for them until they start growing up the side of the pen.
We got fencing up around half of the garden last night. The dogs were digging in it to keep cool and to chase moles. Grrr!
I wish this wasn't a holiday. Seems I have a million phone calls I need to make today. And like an idiot I already took something out to the mailbox.
I need to get cherries picked today too and get the rest of the fencing up.
I think my buyer was going to show up today to pick up birds but she hasn't called to set up a time yet. If she would let me know early enough I could get them caged and save a lot of work later on. My crazy life never seems to slow down.
Karen hope you start feeling some better today.

Hawkeye I've had chicks like that and just let them heal. A little preventative might help but I normally don't bother. Maybe a little Blue Kote would help.
I need to move some more eggs to the hatcher today and see what hatched or didn't hatch during the night. I also realized I've got to fumigate the brooder today because I have turkeys coming this week. I want to be sure everything is pristine for them since they are so vulnerable. I may just set up a bin in the house for the first week or so so I can monitor them more closely. Sometimes I could sure use more of me!

This chick is going to need a lot of PT-- it's now flipping onto it's back. :( I don't have any Vit E, so I'll have to go get some and see if that will fix him up. I'm glad your DH is back at work, but the chest pain still worries me. He shouldn't have that pain. I hope your Dr will let you get back to work and maybe have a solution for your foot. Maybe a boot??

I gave my sticky chick another bath this morning. I just held him under warm running water in the sink. I used a cotton ball to rub him down. He is now mostly fluffed except for the top of his head-- and I'm leaving that alone! You gave me the courage to just wash him again. He's so much happier! I found a few more tiny pieces of shell stuck on him. Now he's running around in there.
Your new pony sounds like he's been studded out. That's not good, but maybe if you work with him, he'll calm down. I own a copy of John Lyon's book-- the one where it talks about all the ground work and basics. I love that book! I have also taken a few Parelli clinics-- and he has a lot of great ground techniques. I like his yo-yo game, that one taught my naughty boy to behave and stay off of me. You should look into a clinic near you for Lyons or Parelli! That would be fun and you'd get a lot of really great advice. :)

I didn't know today was a holiday of some kind! Which one is it? Today is my oldest's last day of school! Both chicks are alive, but I am worried about the blue one that was stuck in his shell. He keeps flipping over. It's sad. Sounds like you got a lot done with your pond and planting. I bet you'll need a LOT more amending to get that garden nice and soft.

Okay how do you spell DUMB! I was just putting eggs in the incubator and noticed that this is NOT memorial day. I have no idea what I was thinking!!! I am relieved actually.
I figured out what the problem was with the ducks I've been getting that were nasty. They have some kind of in egg infection. It came from the eggs I gathered that got all muddy after the last major period of rain. I never wash eggs but apparently they must of contracted some bacteria from all the mud. I just threw out a ton of eggs that had fully developed ducklings in them that died in the shell the last few days. I am going to fumigate my hatcher and start all over. I don't' know why I didn't think of that. I was blaming it on the incubator but I think it was the dirty eggs that did it.
I've decided to go ahead and let my Anconas out. I won't get as many eggs but at least they can get out and keep cleaner. I have the Cayugas in the PVC pen and it gets moved every few days so they are fine. I am sure they won't mind being out to eat grass and stuff again.
My buyer called and isn't coming until tomorrow. So that gives me a little more time to get everything don today.
I have joined the ranks of the totally insane. I have turkeys coming this week. And I just ordered 25 crested chicks from Ideal. They are Polish, Sultans, Houdans, Crevecors etc. I may regret this. They had extras so they were really cheap. I figured I could add to my polish population and change some blood here and there. I can always sell any I don't want to keep. That's my rationalism. I had gotten gold laced and silver laced polish from them a couple years ago and most were fairly nice. I really didn't need them for sure. Maybe I'll just forget to mention it to DH. He has no idea what I have and don't have these days.
The dogs or whatever dug up some more of my onions so I guess we need to get the fence completed today. The chickens have
been digging every thing out of my flower pots so I don't even know why I try! I could scream!

Hawkeye- SO glad your little sticky chick is feeling better! I have done a lot of Clinton Anderson work with my horses so we will probably start playing his "games" today. It is gonna be a long road with this pony but I think I can get him straightened out. I wish I could find a clinic near me that needed a demo horse because he would put on an awesome show for an audience.

I don't know that he will ever be able to run with the herd because of his previous experience. The people I got him from hadn't down anything with him and they had for 12 years so he is trying to figure out where on earth he has landed!!

Danz- You are crazy!! Turkeys and crested chicks?!?! Lady, I don't know how you do it, I can barely handle my gang most days.

I put the goslings out in their pen today and they found a way into the big goose pen while I was out there. I was so scared the gander would go after them but he and the goose were so excited!! It was like a family reunion with everyone honking and sticking their necks out. They are all grazing together now, how sweet is that! I just love these geese.

If anyone is going to the Premier Farm Swap on south Topeka Blvd I would love to meet up and say hi! I want to go just to look around and was thinking of going about 8am if I can get there that early. Let me know and maybe we can say hi.

Hey... when and exactly where is it? I may want to bring some chicks to sell or something, if it's at a time that I can do.

Well, this isn't chicken related, but I'm a happy camper right now. I just got home from physical therapy. I have been working HARD at rehabing my knee. One of my goals was to be able to flex my knee 130 degrees. I never made it until today!
wee.gif
I made it to 130 by myself, and 133 with a little help from the therapist. My Doctor appt is Wednesday, I know he threw that 130 degree thing out to me as bait, but I took the bait, hook line and sinker, and I made it! My therapist said almost no one makes it that far. I passed all my strength and balance tests with flying colors. So now if I can just get this foot thing figured out I'll be good to go.
