Consolidated Kansas

With our big rubber tub out in the layer coop I have it dug into the ground which helps keep it clear of ice. I think it holds around five gallons or just a tad more.

After a night of close to zero and the next day of only around 15 it had a three inch layer of ice in it which was easy to lift out once a hole was made.

Craigs List and farm auctions are great sources for things like waterers. If I'm going to take a double bit or a sledge to break ice I would rather not rip up something new.

I found myself outside at 2am one night this week, thinking I needed to run extension cords and hang a light. It was sooooo cold!!! I got everything out, ran the cords, stepped inside the little house, and was amazed at how still and cozy it was! Not warm, mind you, but not drafty, or damp or anything. So I left well enough alone. The girls were all looking at me like I was crazy anyway. So I'd say we've made it so far. How 'bout the rest of you?

My beautiful SS rooster Bourbon has quite a few spots of frostbite on his comb. I feel terrible. Will be relocating some of the roosts to see if that helps. Did Y'all hear about the second arctic blast coming Monday? Oh, yay

My little polish top hat must have learned a lesson. She had learned how to get out of the barn and would wonder all over the yard and pasture. Unafraid of anything. About a week ago, I didn't see her in the barn when I shut things up. Her spot was empty. So I spent a lot of time looking for her and worrying. The next day when I was out, I heard noise from a plastic box that was upside down in the yard. Picked it up and there she was. She took off running to the barn. And has stayed there since. I have no idea how it got turned over her, but she must have really not liked being there. I am glad I found her and she was ok. And staying in the barn now.
