Consolidated Kansas

Well I don't have much time, I'm headed out today for a hair appt. & to meet Josie so she can get her rooster. I sure enjoyed the cooler day yesterday & used it to build a bank of 6 hole nesting boxes for my chicken coop. I was tired of my bucket nests falling down, so I decided to go out & build something different. I have it all together except the perches & I'll finish that up Friday when I have the time. Then I'll have to have my DH help me hang it because it's too heavy for me to hold up & screw onto the wall by myself.

Have a great day everyone & try to stay cool!

My sister came out and brought two of her granddaughters. They had fun helping feed the chickens. Some times though Help is more work than no help! But they acted like they had a great time with the chickens and ducks so that is what counts. No casualties from it.
I need to go back out and get to work but I needed a rest after they left. I should be out changing the water in the duck pond I loaded it up with algaecide and it still turned dark green in two days. I just don't know what else to do to keep it clear.
I guess put stoppers in the duck's rear ends!
I thought it was going to be somewhat cooler today but it is awfully humid.
Hawkeye, I don't know what Daren and Michelle are wanting. I think they're just in a mood to buy stuff. I would guess ducks because they aren't into chickens. He did say he wanted to pick up some guineas for an uncle.
I really miss all the chatter. Everyone, including myself is busy right now.
I am ready for a break for a few days but don't see it happening soon.

Danz - Have you tried putting the pool in the shade? Sunlight encourages algae growth.

Howdy all! I can concur on the busy! I am up to my nose in busy.

Josie - that sucks about your birds! I would probably be more ticked off, but then again I am a guy. The dog would definitely get evicted.

Coop v2.0 - I need to take some pictures and I will later today. The second door is on, but it is a tad crooked. I am so ticked about that because I measured and every thing is dead on in the measurements. Now there is an 1/8" gap at the top right of the door. Part of my doesn't want to screw with it any more, but then there is the perfectionist part of me.....grrrr....Also, I got the nesting box trimmed out and the lid on. I am still trying to figure out how I will seal the seam at the hinges. I guess it will only leak during a horizontal rain storm coming out of the North. I will keep an eye on it over time. I got the roost cut and ready to assemble inside the coop. I still need to put a heavy epoxy-like paint on the floor, and shingle the roof/nesting box lid. So close!

Danz and Karen - I am still on to head to Park City on the 23rd. I will keep you posted.

Ok, back to work now.

Danz,
I shooed my 2 little ducks out of the chicken house today and boy were they mad or scared -- not sure which. They set up to squawking and the little guineas (I got from Ivy at the swap) set to squawking too. First time I have heard them do anything but peep but it was definately a squawk!! -- Didn't hear buckwheating yet -- just squawking.

The ducks have been out of the little pen for several days now but they won't leave the guineas that are in the pen in the chicken house. They just stay in the chicken house.

They are so funny -- the ducks like it when I set their hard boiled or scrambled egg right next to the pen and put the egg for the guineas in the pen right next to the duck plate that is on the outside of the pen! Then they all happily eat away!!

Thinking next week I will raise the little pen about 5 inches off the ground and block it up -- that way the little guineas and the ducks can get under it but the big girls won't be able to.

You are right -- too hot to do much today. I worked outside for a couple of hours but then headed for the house!

Sharing thanks that my son-in-law has returned from another deployment. He has been gone for just over 9 months. My two older grandsons are SO excited to have their daddy home!

The youngest, who was less than a week old when Daddy deployed, is still working on it.

What a relief to have him home. That last picture is a charmer.

Danz, that is so neat that your sister came over with the kids! I bet they loved that! They'll probably be telling their mama all about it when they get home.

Pikeman... just breathe and let it go!! LOL It's a chicken coop-- and yours is really super cute right now and a crooked door won't matter in the grand scheme of things. You've done a fantastic job with it! Let us know when you get the pictures up! :)

Prairie I think they'll all like the shade by propping up the coop a bit.

Nana-- those are some amazing pictures of your Son in law and the kids! I bet it feels good to have him at home for the entire family! Looks like the baby is well on his way to loving his daddy-- I can see a smile starting there. So sad they have to be apart for so many months at a time.

Well, remember yesterday that my DH just HAD to use the tractor... well, repeat tonight. But I think this is the last time for a while, at least until these babies can grow up, I hope. I had to pull the babies out again. But I wonder if it was a blessing in disguise anyway. Yesterday I checked them over and they were fine when I pulled them out. Today was another story! They were infested with mites! All over! Like millions of them-- their bodies were just crawling with these things, the mites were all over the mouth, eyes, everything! I was horrified and then they started crawling up me. I ran to get the Seven Dust, and pinched it out and drizzled it over their backs and their little heads. And then I dumped some into their nesting. THEN... I wondered if that was the right thing to do, and I headed inside to check online. Turns out, wild bird hobbiest use Seven as well, and they warn against using DE. They say that DE is known to cut up insects and that the DE can cut up skin on babies. So it's a bad thing to use. The Seven dust is 95% talcum powder and the rest is the "drug". So it turns out what I did was fine. And I checked on them a bit ago and there is not one single mite on them anymore, poor things. As soon as my Dh is done, I'm going to put them back in and hope mama bird has enough humor with us to come back to her babies... again. Sigh. Here they are:

And on this one (below) you can see that his eyes are starting to open up a tiny little crack!!! This was not like this yesterday!! So in ONE day, he's starting to get his eyes! Good thing I got them de-mited.

Nana that is so great that your SIL is home. I'll bet those grandsons of yours are super happy. Thank him for his service and thank your daughter for standing by him while he was gone.
Hawkeye love the pictures.
I have one of my doves who built a nest in the netting over the guinea pen. She should be hatching babies within a few days. Here is her picture. She isn't afraid of me at all. Every time I go in to feed the guineas I wiggle her nest because it hits the top of the door. She just rides along.
