Consolidated Kansas

I was giggling about it as I went to bed, and then thought-- I wonder if I should be saying that? Then thought-- eh, long gone, and too funny NOT to! LOL!

It was good natured fun!
Josie, all of them are gorgeous! What are the buff colored chickens? I LOVE their feather legs! Obviously they are in the featherleg class... That serama hen is stunning! WOW!! Love the mottled color!!! Is she a mottled or splash or...?? Beautiful!!!
They are buff laced brahmas originally created a few years ago by Dan Powell. He was working on gold laced brahmas and this is an off shoot of that work. I have wanted these birds since they first came out into the public sphere but the original birds were selling for hundreds of dollars a piece. People were paying six to eight hundred dollars or more for hatching eggs and trios could easily run $1000 to $2000. DH said just wait and be patient. I also have four chicks in a grow out pen, two buff laced and two gold laced. Some breeders believe that you should maintain the gold lacing in the program because buff laced over buff laced eventually fades the lacing in a few generations.

That serama hen is a mottled color in my book. I think in the serama world they would call it exchequer? There are completely different names for colors in the serama show circuit than what we call other birds! She is a super nice young hen, fabulous type and attitude. I spent a small fortune (just ask DH, he calls them the million dollar seramas) a year and a half ago to bring in a quad of birds from Grady Taylor who is one of the top breeders of exhibition seramas in the country. I also have two frizzled serama hens from another private breeder in Ohio. This is their first year breeding so I have a handful of juveniles growing out that will eventually be culled through and I will sell the extras on here as an auction. I can't sell them locally because most people don't appreciate the time and money spent to breed serama that are show quality and could be taken table top and win.

Will you let me know where you found dosing for the denagard? I ordered some but I don't know how much to use. I have some young meat chicks that are sneezing a lot.

Josie i love buff colored chickens what are they called?

Michelle
Thank you! They are buff laced brahmas. Like a light brahma but a different color.

The fall Gardner auction is Saturday Sept 15th at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner. Starts at 8:00 AM. I try to get there earlier so I can look around. It is strictly an auction. You should go just once for the experience. Everything comes caged so you would want to throw a blanket on your back seat or something just to be safe. It cost $5 to get in but to me it is worth $5 just to look at all the eye candy. They have the auction outside in the arena, then there is another auction inside for the caged birds and chicks. You can have anything from parakeets to $2000 parrots in there.
I should sell some of my diamond doves. They have started producing and my cage is super crowded. I bought a pair at Gardner originally.
I could never go to this!! I would die and DH would kill me! Have you ever sold birds there?

So since you tempted me does that mean you will sell me hatching eggs some day? Are these bantam or LF brahmas? I like my big birds best.
I had to remove my broody Serama hen. She was so over protective she wouldn't let her babies eat or drink. She flogged me more than once. Unfortunately I lost all her babies. There was only one left when I took her out and it didn't live through the night. Just too far gone. Stupid Chicken.
They are LF of course!! And they are HUGE! I think they are about 6-7 months old so hoping for some pullet eggs soon!

I might sell some eggs this fall to recoup some of the purchase expense but you might want to wait until next spring for eggs because I will have two gold laced to put into the pen too and another two buff laced to add a bit of diversity. I also want to keep the gold lacing in there to maintain the lacing quality and darkness in the buffs.

That is too bad about your serama hen. Mine has been a wonderful mommy so far. She is very protective but that is ok with me as long as she takes care of the kids. I stuck two extra cochin chicks under her that hatched two days later and at first she wouldn't take them so I turned the lights off for a couple hours and when I went back she was growling with all the babies under her! Silly girl!
I hope I can house my Olansk with my Seramas eventually. Since I sold 50 adults I have a little more room. I am not even sure I am going to continue raising the Seramas eventually. I just don't have a good market for them here. I really need to start shipping although I hate to start all that.
Yeah, I think with seramas you have to ship, there is little appreciation for the breed here. People apparently think they are tiny and should cost less than a big chicken!
My first Red Star X Brahma chick hatched yesterday. It was actually 5 days early so it apparently had been incubated some before I put it in. ( I found their eggs in the barn and culled out all that weren't good.) Nice pale red tinted blonde chick. I have high hopes for future layers from this group. My silly red cochin boy has been trying to take over those hens though so the current eggs wouldn't be so desirable. I won't try hatching any more after those I've already gathered. I don't want cochin mixed for layers.
Well why not? Do you think all they would do is try to sit instead of lay?

I went outside today and something weird happened. There as water falling from the sky! Oh, wait....It's been so long!
yuckyuck.gif
It is doing that here too!!!!! It has been doing it for several hours now, gently falling from the sky! I was in shock or awe or both. I can't believe it is still raining now as I type....I think some of the birds out there have never been rained on before! The geese think it is wonderful. I have to go back out and change out a bunch of waterers still but I got cold and wet and had to warm up!

It's so nice out today I couldn't believe how cool it is, it really feels like fall. I wonder if we're going to have an early fall now, at this point I think that would be OK in my book as long as we don't go into an early winter. We got a tiny bit of rain during the night, I woke up hearing it raining but still not enough to wet the ground much at all. We had a few sprinkles here so far, but nothing much. I don't think the animals & birds know what rain is any more. When it rained a little the last time we had some thunder & the little dogs inside barked at it, I think they forgot what it sounded like.

Danz, how big is your peacock pen & how many peafowl do you have in there? I was thinking last night of making an 8 ft by 12 ft pen. I think that would be more manageable size for me to build & I found two 2x6x8s in the garage that I can use for the ends of the frame & then I'll get two 12 ft ones tomorrow when I go to Derby. Then I will put braces in the each corner to give it more stability & that sounds good too to have one brace in the middle. I have not even said anything to my DH about building the pen, he's focused right now on building the coop & I don't want to distract him from that at all. The only thing that worries me is getting the 2nd end of the livestock panel bent over & hooked to the opposite end, that may be a challenge for me by myself. Some people have said that they threw a rope over a tree branch & pulled it, but I don't think there is a branch at the right place for me to use like that. Yeah, I really do like just the India Blue peacocks, I think they're beautiful just themselves. I do like some of the other colors too, especially the black shoulder, so maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing to get one of these from this gal up by Newton. She's supposed to get me pics today some time so I can see them before I drive an hour up there. I'm trying to figure out what I could bring one home in, but if they have molted their tails right now maybe it wouldn't be too bad. Thanks for the info on the Gardner Auction, I'll add that to our Swap & Auction list on the swap sites. I try to keep those updated as people give me info on new ones or changes if they let me know. I don't know if we will make it up there, it depends on what is going on then. That is the week I go to KC for my Dr. appt that I had to reschedule, so I doubt after driving up there my DH will want to take another 3 hr drive in the same week since it's a 4 hour drive for us to KC.

Josie, those are some beautiful chickens, I love those Brahmas! I'm hoping now that I got rid of the ornery rooster that my hens will get their back feathers grown back in now. The other two aren't so ornery with the hens like he was, they were starting to run & hide from him & that one poor Barred Rock hen has such an awful torn up back, she is starting to heal now that he is gone, but she still has been hiding out in the coop, I can't blame her. I have been spraying her back with the Veterycin spray.

I was out looking at my chicks in the grow-out pen today & it looks to me like I have 4 lavender Orpington roos, darnit. It looks like so far I may have two pullets from Chooks of the lavender Orp/porcelain Isabels & probably 1 roo in those, so it looks like I'm going to have some roos to either process or find new homes for. I think I will keep one lavender Orp roo, they're going to be really pretty. I have one that is really getting bigger than the rest, so I'll watch them & see which one ends up being the nicest & then keep him. I'm going to have several of the Swedish Flower Hen chicks that are roos also, but I think so far I know which roo I will want to keep for my breeding program. He's going to have a lot of color when he's all done feathering out & changing. They get more colorful the older they get. Danz, what colors did you get in the ones that hatched & how many do you have? I love how you get all of these different color patterns with them & different combinations, they're so much fun.

I have been going out in the mornings to check feed & all in the grow-out pen & I have this one Salmon Favorelle pullet that likes to get up on the roost while I'm over there checking the feeders & talk to me, it's so cute! I have named her Millie & she is the most friendly of the two pullets I have. She does this funny little sound when she's "talking" to me so I just act like I understand her & talk to her, she's just a sweetie. I named the rooster that goes with those two Jacque because they're French birds originally. I haven't found a name for the other pullet yet. I will have to get some pics of the Favorelle pullets, they're starting to get really nice lacing on their neck feathers & I love the feathered feet.

Well you all enjoy this weather, the forecast still says 100 for tomorrow here, yuck, I was so hoping they would change that.

We haven't gotten a lot of rain but it's been a nice sprinkle for sure. My ducks are in the driveway checking out the pot holes. All of the chickens are out running around.
They seem very happy! I've got to run to town to pick up a prescription pretty soon. I hate making a trip for one lousy thing. Ugh!

It's raining here, yay! My DH went out to work on the coop & got some pieces cut for the back wall & then had to come in because it started to rain a lot harder. I know the chickens will be so relieved that it's cooler that they won't even mind getting wet. I looked at the forecast & we have a lot of rain forecast in the next week. I know we need it, but we also need to work on my coop. It would be nice if it would rain at night & then have some times inbetween when we could work.

I have no idea where my chickens went with this rain - you'd think they'd go in the coop? I finished painting the 3 wall panels that will be the west wall of my new coop - will put those up tomorrow, then we just have the north and south walls (gable ends), the roof, trim, thisNthat, and run the power, outlets, lights, etc. Can't wait!! I'm hoping it will be out in the yard by the end of the month.

Fern thought she'd help me while I was painting - poor thing, I kept telling her no, stop, get, no, no, down, no... she kept grabbing the Walmart bag that had rollers in it. She was happy she got the bag and took off running with it.. I grabbed my camera and just laughed... after I got the bag from her, she grabbed the paint tray on the floor... she's a thief!!

Oh my gosh Sunflowerparrot, she sounds so much like Jasmine, she will grab something of mine, look at me & run all the way down the yard away from me so I can't get it from her. I think they truly are sisters! This is the dog for those of you that don't know which one she is, she looks almost identical to Fern only their spots are in different places & she is the serious one of the two of mine. But she can get goofy sometimes just like Fern if she gets a mind to.

I don't think we got a lot of rain, but any little bit will help at this point, I was so happy to see it. I opened the front door while it was raining to look out & just had to laugh, there are two big ceramic flower pots by my front door & in the one on the left was a whole pot of kittens all curled up together. I didn't count how many were in there, but it was full. The two dogs were also on the porch to stay out of the rain, but they were already soaking wet.
