Consolidated Kansas

Thank you everyone for the kind words. They really mean a lot.

Danz, So far the meds are doing ok. No reactions to this new one. I tried to eat a very very small bite of hot dog yesterday because it smelled so good cooking on the grill and regretted it. My tummy felt sick and hurt for hours. Every friday is our "I'm not cooking so we are ordering out" day, so i didn't know what to do since i'm still pretty much on the liquid diet. I ordered chinese and ate some wonton soup broth and egg drop soup and had some steamed rice. It set really well in my stomach. I'm so excited about that! It's the small things now :)

Tweety, I'm so sorry about your black lab. You're right, this has been a tough year on you. Hobby Lobby has cement pavers you can make in your pets honor with stones, tile, marbles, etc. Might be a great way to remember him by putting a paver in the back where he liked to hang out. We buried my little pom in the back in a spot where she used to love to sit and look out. Again, I'm so sorry.
Thanks :) I do have a couple of these exact things that I was planning to use to get a dog print of him, but you know how life goes and the boxes got stuck down in the craft room and never done. Thanks for reminding me. I'm going to see what I can do and get it done! I wish we would have been able to bury him here, but at 100lbs he was difficult to even get into the car let alone find a spot to bury. I had to have him creamated and leaving him there was the most difficult part. DH kept telling me "Honey - he's still with us, we carried him in, but he's now walking out with us". *tears*

Tweety, for some reason when I "multi'ed" you, what you wrote didn't show up in the text box above, but what I was going to say is that yes, you have had a terrible year and I am so sorry about your lab. I don't remember the exact timing but it doesn't feel like very long since you had to make a similar decision about your cat, and I know having the two coming back to back like that is really hard. Hang in there! You know you gave them great lives and made the right decision for the right reasons at the end - something that is not always easy to do!

Yeah, we had to put abigail down not but about 2 months ago. She was a year older than Fritz, so we knew that they would be going about the same time, just didn't think it would be this close together. The vet remembered us bringing her in recently as well and was just as upset that we had to do this so close together.

I haven't sprung this idea on DH yet and I don't know if it would really work or not. We have a room upstairs, on the east side, that is windows on three sides (the west side is our bedroom wall.) It is open to the back stairway but we almost never use that stairway. It has no vents at all. I wonder if I could use it as kind of a greenhouse in winter, if we could find some way to heat it? It's a small room that we use as a library, but the staircase could be a problem for keeping the room heated.
Is there anyway that you can put a drape over the door to the stairwell? That would do a lot for keeping the heat in. My mom used to put a drape over our basement stairwell door every winter since there wasn't an actual door there.

QUESTION: My friend is looking for a CooCoo Maran Rooster (not sure on the spelling of that) Anyone breed here these? She bought 5 and one was supposed to be a roo from this place out east for a lot of money and they all turned out to be pullets. (Don't we all that can't have roos wish that would happen to us!)

Just popped in to post an ad and wanted to say hello to everyone! Hope you're all doing great! I'm afraid I won't be able to read back through right now, but I think of you all often. I have to have someone else doing a lot of my chicken care and I've worked 55 hours in the last week...it's getting old.

Tweety, I think that MyABCs3 still has Cuckoo Marans- I sold her my flock a couple three years ago and I know she's been rigidly breeding to standard, so she' d be a good one to ask.

I have to run again (always, it seems) so Ciao!

Don't know if anyone posted this yet, but just an FYI from Craigslist http://wichita.craigslist.org/grd/3243278567.html
Someone i thought mentioned a need for one of these not so long ago
Wow! If it weren't so far away I would jump on that. The fingers are pricy but the expensive part is there. I can't believe they are selling it so cheap.

Yep I would hang something over the door to keep the heat in. but if it is upstairs the heat will tend to stay there anyway. Heat rises. Unless it is below freezing you probably wouldn't need to heat it full time. I would just use one of those portable ceramic type heaters that cost maybe $20. You can set the heat on them and the amount of fan going. If I had that room I would probably have plants and Incubators in it!!!

Congrats on getting to eat the chinese food. One step at a time! I don't know if I could handle not being able to eat solid food.

Your DH is remarkable. What a perfect answer!

I do have a cuckoo roo. I was going to use him as a back up rooster for my main one but I have another young one I hatched so I'm good. This one is just the perfect age to start breeding, maybe 5-6 months old. French type with some feathering on his legs. Send me a PM if you or rather she is interested. Unless she wants the young chick which I could sell as well.

All my Seramas just left. Now I need to get out and fumigate their house and move some lavender orps out there. They really are way too big to still be in the brooder. This won't be their permanent home but I think they'll love the extra room and being able to get outside. More downsizing!!

At least you're looking on the bright side.

Awww ... your DH put it so beautifully.

It would be hard to put a drape over it because there's a turn in the stairway and so the open part is actually all on the floor and oddly shaped. We could probably rig up something that would cut down on at least some of the openness, though. If nothing else, there's a door at the bottom we could keep closed and just deal with having to heat up the stairwell in addition to the room. Danz, a small ceramic heater would probably be the most efficient way to heat the room. Heat does rise, but we heat mainly with a fireplace and our floor plan is fairly open. If it gets down around freezing and below, the fireplace doesn't keep up and we set the furnace to 64. So it's not always that warm even in the "warm" areas of the house!

LOL, yes! It happens exactly the opposite way for me. I have a 40% failure rate with the "pullets" I've bought from Orscheln.

OH burr!!! I have to be warm. My kids keep their houses cool and I have to have a sweater and a blanket to be there. 64 would be ample for a greenhouse area. I kept one of those little heaters in my actual greenhouse last winter and had it set on the lowest setting. It did great and I only lost a few plants I had on the north side. Mind you my greenhouse is old and drafty and doesn't work without extra heat most of the time. Plants like being cool....just not freezing.
Hi Chooks! Think of you often.

I've been out sweeping and hosing and vacuuming out the Serama house. I just came in and mixed up some oxine to disinfect it. I am so angry with myself or my chicks...not sure which. They apparently knocked their water fount over sometime last evening. As soon as I opened the door I detected that smell of mold. I am very sensitive to it and pick up on it very quickly.

Sure enough my oldest lemon cuckoo cockerel was not feeling good. I brought him and tried to get some probiotics, vitamins and electrolites down him but he just died. I know he has to have eaten some of the mold that started to form. I moved the other chicks that were with him to a different bin. I plan to move them all out to the Seramas house when it is clean and dry again. But it will probably be late tomorrow before it is completely ready. I need to put some tin along the edges to keep the mice out where they have dug holes too. Seems I'm always a little late getting my projects done. I've had the worst luck with these lemon cuckoos. I just bought some eggs from another seller in hopes I have better luck with those.

awww.. i'm sorry Danz! That seriously sucks! I'm like you and can smell mold from a mile away. I had a moldy bag of feed a few weeks ago and decided that i'm not going to store the feed in the trash barrel in the coop any more. It's now in the garage where it's much dryer.

I just threw a brand new bag of chick starter away for the same reason. It had gotten damp before it was opened. This little guy was showing beautiful barring. He was about 3 months old. These English bred birds seem to be a little over sensitive. I wonder if since they all were imported that they may be becoming in-bred. Almost all of them come from Greenfire so I am sure the chances of being related are great. That is why I bought from a different breeder this time. Maybe if their breeders were hatched at a different time I can diversify some blood lines. It sure is hard to get some of these rare breeds going. They become very expensive birds even buying shipping eggs.
I sure hope the winter isn't terrible for the birds. I am hoping to be able to offer some nice quality chicks in spring.
That is if nothing happens to the rest of them.
