Gentle Care Animal Hospital in Lawrence has 2 chicken vets. We're super-lucky to have that option here, as most folks don't have bird vets, much less chicken vets!
If you think she's got an infection, it's best to have someone take a look, if you can afford it (expect it to run around $65), as they can give Baytril, which is a much better choice for antibiotic than anything we can get. They can also tell whether it's helpful, as they can find out whether it's a gram-positive or gram-negative bacterium or some other culprit.
If you can't afford it, keep her warm, in the dark, well fed and it sounds like you have the supplements covered well. Believe it or not, chicken soup is a good assistant in this case...the carnosine is a proven antioxidant that helps viral illness...go figure!

There's no way I can take her to Lawrence. My hubby (understandably) would have a stroke if I drove 80 miles round trip to Lawrence then paid $65 to take a chicken to the vet, and then whatever he/she wanted to give her. I'll just keep doing what I can do here. She's warm, resting, getting silver and echinacea, drinking, eating and getting dosed every 6 hrs with the cough/congestion med that hasn't killed her yet. I'll give her some chicken soup later, after someone's been to the store. Thank you Renee and other chicken friends for the input!!
Welp looks like I will be building another pheasant pen today. If ya wanna help Ill be here all day. Man its quite up here with out them loud dang ducks and only one lil' roo. I have dropped a ton of loot for my next batch of birds whoop whoop.
Update on the girl I brought inside Wednesday night. Her breathing is better ,still inhaling thru her mouth but not gasping like she was. She quite a bit more active, so much so it's harder to get any medicine into her. She ate some apple yesterday AND the clove of garlic I mashed. Man she really went for the garlic!!! Haven't heard her sneeze for over a day but she's making a sound I take for a chicken cough. Shakes her head when she does that. It occurred to me that she might have something in her throat but how the heck do you get to look down a chicken's throat!!!??? None of my other birds are showing any signs of having what she has. We're thinking she has a cold. Keeping her warm, fed, watered and medicated. I added one drop of infant tylenol to her cough medicine and all I know is it hasn't hurt her and she's not feeling too hot like before and her comb and wattles aren't flaming red like before. My 9 yr old granddaughter is dying to just let her be loose in the house but I told her she'd have to follow her around and clean up her poop. She's not as keen on the idea now. Go figure!!
