HEChicken, do you know why the gentian violet prevents pecking? I have just gentian violet, would that be a good substitute?

OMGosh Sunflower, that's terrible, I can't imagine. I will keep them in my prayers.

maidenwolf, it sounds like your chick is going to be fine. I don't think I would turn the light off only because you're going to have to turn it back on when they go outside unless you plan on keeping them in for a while still. My chicks seem to have day/night mixed up too. I got up at 1am and found the baby chicks have decided it was time to eat, I guess we will deal with that later too because it really doesn't matter too much because I know they will adjust. I find it interesting that my older chickens go to bed earlier than the younger ones. I do think it has something to do with the light. I have some 3 month olds I'm going to turn their light off for good today. *cringe* I don't think they need it for heat, but I think it lights the way for them to go to bed.

On an overall happier note, my daughter gave birth to her second child this morning. He is 10 lbs. 4 oz. He was born at home with a midwife. I'll be going out (to Reno) to see them later in the week.

Candace Harding's 21-year-old son was killed last night. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers. (Candace is Fern, Lily and Jasmine's breeder)

Sunflower, thanks for letting us know. My heart goes out to her and to Trish44 and her son. There just aren't any words to cover something like these things. I will remember to pray for them and for Hawkeye's recovery.

And then there is sharol's post. Thank you so much for sharing your happy, happy news with us! How wonderful!

I turned off the gas a few years ago. I now heat with a couple of space heaters and my wood stove in the basement. the wood stove is small but does make a difference. Propane may be nice because you can stock up when the price is low.

Three weeks and three days old, my fifteen chicks and two ducklings spent their first night outside (under a heatlamp). With the temp getting down to twenty-six degrees last night I was very happy to see them all happy and running around their run this morning. Though it shouldn't surprise me any more, ya'lls advice has always been spot on!

Sharol, congrats that is a big baby & at home no less!

It's really pretty nice outside today, I'm glad to see the sun out it does help some with my mood today. My heart is just so heavy today for Dana, my son, & Candace & her family. I keep getting teary eyed & I can't seem to stop.

My DH just went out to work on putting up the supports for the roof on the new coop, so I guess I will wait maybe until he gets the roof on & then take some progress pics. I went out & let out the oldest guineas awhile ago, but instead of picking bugs they're sitting in the tree above the hoop coop, silly birds. I let the turkeys out for awhile too & they were happy to come out & get some exercise & pick some green stuff. I just put them back in though because I have to make a run to Wichita for some things & I don't leave them out when I'm gone. I'm leaving my DH here to work on the coop today, so I hope he gets with it, he was slow starting. I think I am really going to like that roofing I got, you all will see it when he gets it up there.

Danz, I lost one of the little pied guineas last night, it just wasn't thriving for some reason & it didn't make it. I don't know if it was too cold out there for them or what. I have all of the hoop coop covered with either tarp or plastic except the front & have some cattails in the back of there for them & the barrel too if they want to get in that.

Whoever it was that asked me about the rooster, yes I caught him yesterday evening & got him back into his pen thank goodness. He was getting too smart about hiding from me.

Last night my GP Jasmine got freaked out over some fireworks someone was shooting off east of us. They had some big celebration over there, for what I don't know. Anyway, she stayed around for a little while & then just couldn't take it any more I guess. I got a call from the neighbor at the corner of the next road two houses down that she was over there laying on her porch & she was fine there, not hurting anything but she wanted me to know she was there. My DH happened to call from work & I told him when I went out to go to the store last night that both of the dogs were gone & I wanted to go see where they were at that point. I had driven down to the neighbor's & Jasmine was no longer there. I have a feeling they might be going down the hill from us where there are goats at night & that has to stop. Anyway, I got home from the store with my DH right behind me from work & the dogs were back home at that point, so I was relieved they had come back. I don't want them wandering the neighborhood at night for fear they will get shot. The people down the hill from us don't know they're our dogs & what they're for & everybody around here has guns. I have been wanting to get a couple of goats for brush control, maybe if we get them the dogs will have more to watch since all the birds are locked up at night & they will stay here. They may feel like the goats need watching over down there. We have a lot of coyotes around us all the time here.

cubbysan, is this the show in Sedalia? The information I have calls it the Missouri State Poultry Assoc Show & Swap Meet? I don't see anything where it is referred to as a National.
There were many Specials, Regional Meets, etc at the Sedalia show. If you look at the program, it lists the Specials in the back. The ASBC (silkie club) used this show as their Eastern Nationals! And it was AWESOME!!!!! The Ameraucana club, I believe also had a Nationals there, too. Lots of GREAT birds showed up. :)

Oh my gosh-- this is devastating. I'm so very sorry to hear that. I can not even imagine. Many prayers for Candace. :(

HEChicken-- so funny about Cyrus! I LOVED that story about booting him. Heck yeah, and I'd do the same thing! What a meanie!

Trish, I'm so sorry to hear about Dana, that is also just terrible. And to be so young and be at the end of your life-- I just don't even know what to think. It would be very tough. She is going to be so scared, she is just going to need lots of love, support and people there for her. I was sure hoping that she could beat it. :( Maybe she can get a second opinion some where else?
