Danz- I am sorry to hear about your missing cochin. It is always the sweetest ones. Thank you for the compliments. We are all very lucky to have you as a friend, and these new arrivals have made me so happy, they are all very special little ones and all are doing great and settling in. The cochins are in their pen snuggled up, they are both so sweet, when I got them home and took them out one at a time and held them and they just snuggled up to me and layed in my arms. We named them Beauty and Beast. I am a cochin fan now.
Cochins are awesome!! They are also great for kids!! Did you get bantams or LF ones? At the shows, it's either a Silkie or a Cochin that will win the featherleg and usually go on to win the entire show! So they are a GREAT all around bird! SO neat that you got to see Danz! Wish I lived closer to her-- I think we'd be hanging out a lot! LOL

He's the best. When I took Misty in last fall with laying problems, he told me right up front that he doesn't do surgery on chickens (too high a mortality rate and too expensive for the client), but he was willing to gently euthanize her when it was clear there was no alternative. I like his straight forward attitude and his gentleness with the chickens. He is also my vet of choice with the dogs and my cat.

I have not been into his office, but have talked to him on the phone and he has helped me with a couple of problems with the geese. A few years ago, in the spring some of the geese were gettting sick and a couple even died. It was one of the real wet springs with lots of rain. There was grass in the pasture that had grown tall the previous summer and the tops died, leaving cllumps of dead grass with green grass starting to grow under that mass. With all of the rain, mold was growing under there also with the green growth. So the geese were eating mold along with the new green growth. Mold is deadly to geese. I had gone out in the pasture, realized what was going on, did some internet research, but was not sure I had it figured correctly or what to use to medicate them. All I had was Duramycin 10. After calling every vet in the area and being told there was NO bird vet in the area, I someway heard of Dr Mendoze and called him. He confirmed it sounded like mold and that the Duramycin should work, and if not I could get something else from him. Thankfully the Duramycin did work, and the geese that were showing symptoms got well.

The other incident was when one of the older ganders developed a prolapse. Again, I did the internet research, but was not sure that what people said to do was correct. I called him, he confirmed what was happening and what I should do. It was so nice to have someone with knowledge confirm what I had found out and be willing to offer advice. It is also great to know if something comes up I can't figure out, he is there.

Hey all!
I know it's been awhile, but it's been a rough couple weeks for me. More hospital stays and ER visits. I have my procedure on Friday to hopefully cut down on some of these symptoms. The dang nausea is what's getting me the worst lately.

Sorry, but I can't catch up on all 600+ posts I missed. LOL. I hope everyone is doing well. My birds are still doing fine. I never did catch that dang possum, but we think it might have gotten hit by a car because it's completely disappearded.

You will have your own broodies for sure. Cochins are notorious for sitting.

I am so sorry you have been so sick. I do hope the botox works. You poor thing. I can't imagine how miserable you have been, and I know that is very hard on your body. You have been in my prayers. Please do get well and thanks for checking in with us.

These are large fowl. I love my cochins. They are great easy going birds. Neither of those had been handled much but they should calm fairly easily.
Yes if you were a couple hours closer I'd be darkening your door. If no other reason to play with your daughter. She is so cute! But you know if you were closer I would enable you to become a danzsizer!!

I used Dr. Mendoza because of many recommendations to care for Tyggy. He called me every day to give me a progress report and he was very to the point but also very caring. I know I will be using him again. He did all he could to save her and keep her out of pain. And Josie filled in the blanks for me and helped me get through it. Just proof positive you are going to be an awesome Mamma!!!

I'm sure Friday can't come soon enough for you, I hope this procedure goes well & you feel 100% better.
She is beautiful! Quite the bird once she got all prettied up!

Yeah I guess I'm back on predator alert. I looked again this evening and she is just gone. I know it sounds weird to be affectional toward a bird that is useless in terrns of eggs or meat or breeding. But she was the ultimate of sweethears!
I miss you! Wish I could help you!
I'm glad you are taking another stab at it Mike. We are all good people here. I for one am waiting to hear some more of your recipes. Remember we are all here as friends and to share and help each other when we can.
It was very nice to meet you too. You are a very pretty young lady. You should be very proud of yourself. I do hope your kids are thrilled. ...and you too.
Ahh, I'm sorry you're missing another bird, those darned owls anyway! I can't believe you're having so much trouble with owls, I wonder how you can deter them, I really don't know how you get owls to leave. We have them here, but I don't have buildings they can get in. We usually have one in the backyard & one down front in the wooded area & they call back & forth to each other. I'm sure when my guineas are out all the time I won't be so thrilled with them being here. I looked at that link you posted for the rare birds & yeah they are pretty, but the rooster reminds me of the Wheaten Ameraucana with that beard. I just can't imagine paying that much for any bird, not in my lifetime!

Josie, that house sounds wonderful, I hope it works out for you to get it. I love wrap-around porches & wish we could have one, but it doesn't work with the way our house is built. I hate carpet too & I want to rip it all out of this house & put wood down, but right now it's not going to happen. It just doesn't work well when you have two dogs & two cats in the house. Talking my DH into taking it all out though is a big hurdle. I had done that in my house in Derby & had either wood or tile everywhere. It sure helped me with my allergies to get rid of the carpeting & it would again if he would only agree to it. I would just right now like to get rid of the carpet on the stairs & in the hallway upstairs, then slowly work on getting rid of it other places. I know wood floors are cold, but you can always have area rugs. Let us know how it goes with the house at any rate.

I made a run to Orschelyn's this evening to get some extra feed & pine shavings. I got back & just got out & went to the garage & started pulling all the trays out from under all the rabbit cages, dumped them all & then sprayed them down with the hose. I left them to dry while I did all of my chores & then went back & carried them all in the garage again & filled them back up with fresh pine shavings. That's the biggest downfall of having to keep the rabbits in the garage over the winter. I wish I had a building just to put them in, even an old shed with a dirt floor would be nice, but I don't have one. I'm going to have to invest in some lighter plastic trays though, those big metal ones really get heavy when you have to carry them out to empty them. My back is feeling what I did already. After lifting feed bags out of the trunk & carrying them where I needed them & then carrying out all of those trays full of rabbit droppings my back is done for tonight.

I let my two extra lavender Orp roos out to run around with my general laying flock this afternoon. I'm trying to move as many birds out of the grow-out pen as I can to try to make it not quite so crowded in there until I can get the breeder coop done & the pens. I have one more Ameraucana roo in there that I'm trying to find a new home for. I brought that one back home for breeding that my friend had, so this one is an extra & needs a new home. He'll probably be a nice roo, but I don't need another one. That one lavender Orp roo is going to be another huge one, he's just growing like crazy & is about 3 times bigger than the other one I have that needs a home too. I thought they might as well free-range with the others until I find someone to take them or whatever I end up doing with them. I was hoping I could find new homes for them, they seem like nice roosters.

I let the turkeys out this morning for awhile & they were still acting really wild today, just flying around all over the place. I don't know if it's the time of year or what has gotten into them. They pace back & forth in front of the door to their pen until I go let them out & today the hens were flying up on top of the hoop coop & getting in the trees, they were just all over the place. Has anyone else seen their turkeys acting like this? The tom is still doing his mating dance, I didn't know they got so crazy this time of year. It makes me a little nervous to let them out for fear they'll get crazy & fly off.

Well I was just supposed to take a break, but it got extended, so I need to get busy again. Have a good night all!

I'm jealous maidenwolf, I'm dying to meet Danz IRL. :) Hmmmm, what can I buy?

I'm so sooooo sorry Tweety. I promise to keep you in my prayers. Please keep us updated.

Josie, the lady that I know making them that uses shower curtains, you can't see that she used them because they're completely enclosed in the fabrics. I'm sure your DH will catch on quickly, especially if that's all you have around. They're not hard. I had a snappi once instead of pins, but I went back to pins. I still have my pile of diapers and they are so bright white it amazes me. I've been thinking about taking them out of my closet and retiring them to the shed since they're just sitting there nowadays. I will agree with the potty training part, but more than anything it's keeping them dry disposable or cloth. You teach them that to be wet or dirty isn't the way to be, you don't want them used to feeling wet. I have early potty trainers, all of them and it was easy too.

Chicken gender... I'm working on reading this but it's a little tough to read.

HOLY CRUDDY DUDDIES!!!! I can't believe the price of those chicks. They're beautiful and amazing, but GEEZ! How did they get them to begin with?

Hawkeye, my thought is that the gender is determined before the egg is laid but the incubating conditions could influence which ones actually hatch.

Right, right. I would never leave a wet diaper on for sure!! I have a friend who has a little girl who is over 3 years old and still in diapers and she is having a tough time with potty training. I remember both my little sisters learning to start using the potty when they started walking and were definitely potty trained by 2! I think the article mean't that a baby in a super duper absorbent disposable diaper that wicks all the urine away from them may not "know" as well when they have soiled their diaper and they have a harder time telling when they "need to go" because of that making it harder to learn when to go to the potty to begin with. I just like to find reasons to justify to DH why we are going to do something that is a bit more work for him than something that comes out of a box and gets thrown out! I think I already had him convinced when I showed him the price comparisons between cloth and disposable for the first two years!

My wife became pregnant with our oldest daughter shortly after we moved to Kansas for graduate work at KU in the 1990s (both of us were working on doctoral music degrees in organ performance). The baby would kick ferociously whenever Liz played Bach. We thought she loved it. She would start crying anytime she heard liz practicing Bach after she was born. She still dislikes organ music to this day, and has only gone to recitals when there is a boy she likes attending.

That's funny!

I haven't heard from my "oldest daughter" who is a chiropractor in Connecticutt. She's a smart young woman so I know she's fine, I will just feel better once I've heard from her. She isn't really our daughter but lived with us for 2.5 years while she was doing pre-med at WSU. Oh! She's coming home for Thanksgiving -- so excited to see her!

I hope you've heard something (good) by now. Waiting to hear something seems to take forever.

Hey all!

I'm sorry things are still so rough; I'll keep my fingers crossed that Friday's procedure works out well for you.

I hope she's just hiding out tonight for some reason and you find her in the morning. It does seem like it's always the sweet ones ...

I agree completely. You guys bring back lots of memories. When my DD was born in 1975, we were going from two salaries to one, so we were pretty conservative in spending. I found a box of "Dexter Diapers" at a garage sale for $10. It seemed like a lot of money, but they were shaped with tabs that crossed in front and looked easier to manage than the folded ones, so I splurged. Later I found their "diaper covers" (foam, diaper shaped covers that allowed you to tuck in the tails and not use pins). When the bleach destroyed the foam inserts, I took them apart and made new liners from other diapers (also from garage sales). I bought a dozen more when Jill was about a year old from a store and they were hideously expensive but still cheaper overall than the use and toss paper ones.

30 years later, my daughter used the same diapers (the better ones that were still in decent condition) for my granddaughter. She had bought the newer ones that snap together and use removable liners, but Lina was just too small for them to fit yet. My good old Dexter Diapers worked great for her for a couple of months until she grew into the modern ones.

Babies don't want to be wet and cold, and they learn to use a potty to avoid that. I am a huge proponent of cloth diapers. Cheaper, more environmentally friendly, and better for potty training. It doesn't get better.

I suspect those on this list are more open to cloth diapers because we are mostly people who are becoming more self sufficient, and that would be attractive to us.

Sharol

Hawkeye -- they are LF and just gorgeous. My daughter had been wanting a Cochin so this blew her away.
danz- I think the little fluffy yellow chicks may be light brahma? They have pea combs. We were playing detective last night trying to figure them out it is something my daughter is very interested in and something I am still learning. It makes it harder when you dont know what are mixed or pure but I cannot wait to see what they turn out to be .
mommahen - Danz is super sweet and down to earth and very easy to talk to. I wish we could all get together for a potluck or cup of coffee, thank would be great.
