I found sevin and something called dairy and livestock dust says safe for poultry made by gordon's anybody tried it? I use the deep litter method in my coop do I need to clean it out and disinfection with bleach & water?
Look for anything that is carbaryl. It is all the same as sevin. I would avoid anything with Pyrethrum in it though because it can cause paralysis if absorbed through the skin.

Chickendanz - so sorry about your house/farm. Couldn't the money place that hired the embezzler be held responsible - taken to court or something? Sometimes all that kind of legal action costs more than its worth, but its really really not okay that you got put into such a position at no fault of your own! Trish - had to chuckle at the GP story. Danny is really into tools, equipment. Well, he's into everything (grin) - but seems to have a bent in that direction. One night at dusk I dropped my flashlight without realizing it, then when I needed it was struggling to see what I needed to see while getting the girls tucked away. Danny had seen me drop the flashlight, went and found it, and brought it to me in his mouth. One morning I was late at getting the girls out and about, and they were complaining. Danny took it upon himself to attempt to open the run. He got the latch turned/opened, and went and found a long stick to use as a lever to pull open the door. The run is an a-frame, and he wasn't strong enough to pull the weight of the door up from its closed position, but he had the stick placed through the handle - obviously figured out what he needed to do to get it open, if only he were a little stronger. He watches me intently with anything I use for opening and closing things, studies it, and then tries it out himself. I guess the puzzle intrigues him. He understands how to open a velcro fastener, can turn the screw on a c-bolt, etc. Just one smart puppy! Love the chicks Maidenwolf - can't wait till I have some!! Decided to break my hen's brood this winter, wait till after the move to let her go broody. Once I move I'll have a big coop for current chickens, with a separated pen for juveniles, and current house can be a brooder house. Wish I also had a smaller brooder, just for chicks I'd purchase, in addition to the ones my hens will hopefully lay/raise. Anyone have an old hutch thingie, like for rabbits, standing around they'd like to find a home for? Maybe I'll have my Amish friends build me something.. I'd like to get some more rir pullets - not going to breed them, just for eggs. Also thought about cinnamon queen as they are supposed to outlay even the rir's. Anyone have any of those? What are their temperaments like? Sara
That was a long time ago. I went through a nasty divorce shortly after that so that so it all kind of became part of an overall bad time in my life. I'm just glad it's long over. I just hate to see people make the same mistakes again.
I think I have a GPyrenees story to beat both of those. Day before yesterday I was burning Trash. I saw Cloud with something in her mouth heading across the lot with it. I went out to see what she had. She had a wad of tin foil and some other stuff melted together that was still showing red and smoking. She laid it down to chew on it and the dead grass had started smoldering. Seriously! It was a good thing I was watching her or she could have caused a major fire.

Maidenwolf I think she'll be fine as long as you can keep her away from the roos while she heals. I've had some big deep gashes on some hens and they recovered as long as they didn't get torn open again before they grew feathers back.

I had a busy day bird wise today but got nothing else accomplished. My game birds and the geese loved their fermented feed. The geese always have about half of their food left each day. Today it was cleaned up entirely. They ate every bit of it. The turkeys, and peafowl ate all the fermented food but left some of the dry that they had. I had to take out over half of the food in the 5 gallon bucket I brewed to give them each some, and the same for the other bucket that I am feeding to the birds in the grow out pen and the Swedish Flower hens. I decided it was time to mix up a really big batch. So I cleaned a spot in the shop and moved a 55 gallon barrell in there. I put about 125 pounds of grain in the bucket and then added all the other stuff. So in a couple days I hope to be feeding from it. Maybe if it works I can get rid of a couple of these other buckets in the house. I make a mess with them every time I take out feed or add more grain.
I couldn't stir the big amount of feed with a hoe like DH suggested, but I was able to do it with a shovel. Somewhere around here I have a flat hoe thing and I will try it later when I locate it. It was getting late and I was getting tired. It would be nice to just feed from that one barrel although I will still have to add a bunch of feed every day to keep it going. I don't think it will save me any work but maybe in the long run it will save me some feed.
Like Trish I haven't seen a reduction in the feed I use because the crazy birds go nuts eating it like there is no tomorrow.
Hopefully in the long run it will pay off though. I do know I am getting a lot more growth out of the young ones that are eating this. But maybe once I have every bird on it I will have to go get feed less often.
I got my act together and finished worming and treating against mites today as well. So now every bird on the place has been treated for both except for the ducks. They have access to water with Ivermectin in it so hopefully they will treat themselves in the process. I've been wanting to finish that up for a couple weeks but the weather has kept me from doing it. The only birds not treated are some chicks who shouldn't be exposed to anything anyway.

will not sure really i have an egg-o-meter and it was down to 94.5 as the lowest and it was for only like a max an hr from the last time i looked at it. not sure how u can tell if they are still alive now they have incubated for 14 days now

Off camping with the Boy Scouts. Nothing like a Klondike Derby. At least it is not as cold ad last year, and I bought a tent heater this year. I'm getting too old for this.

That is not so low - they should be fine. At 14 days, you can candle them with a bright flashlight and should be able to see development, and movement. Here are some pictures of duck egg delopment. The little dark spot in the middle of the veins will move around and even move away from the light. If you do not see movement, remember, babies sleep sometimes, put the egg back in the incubator and check again in a few days. Ask all the questions you want to.

Did you get the turner?

i just ordered one from ebay they shipped out yesterday, i candled last night again and then i saw about nothing all dark i think they should be fine. i'm setting another 12 eggs today can't wait till the tuner gets here. turning sucks lol

I candled the eggs in my incubator and only 3 out of 20 were not developed. Not bad. They go into lockdown next tuesday. There is one EE egg with some cracks in it. You can see were it got dropped and I didnt notice it when I put it in to incubate. Baby is growing perfectly in there so I guess it will be ok. It must just be the shell and the membrane is still ok. I will have to monitor humidity close so it doesnt dry out. I have some of them sold and looking for a buyer for the rest, hopefully that will come quickly.

Stick with the Sevin Dust. The livestock dust could be the DE-- or something similar, or it could have another active ingredient in it. I would stick with what works. It's really cold right now, so if you want to clean it out and bleach it, that's great. Otherwise, you can treat them and then dust the floor too for now. Then plan on a good cleaning this Spring. Dust the nest boxes as well.

WOW-- that is an impressive dog! Pretty smart!

Hawkeye - fun that you go through Fredonia from time to time. Where is your farm? Once I get moved you'd be welcome to take a detour over to our place - about 5 miles east and 2 miles north of fredonia. Frizzled Pink - CONGRATS on your 5 year anniversary. So good to hear.... Sara
The farm is south of Girard. We have tenant farmers that work the ground now and the land is all over. But all in the same general location. We mainly have tillable land, but we have some pasture too that we rent out for cattle. But anyway, we get out to check it over a few times a year and if one of the guys farming a location says there is fencing issues or erosion or whatever... we go check it out and get it fixed. Sounds like you're going to have a great location out there in the Fredonia area. They also have a really neat church there on the east side of town.

Then maybe it will be a blue of some sorts. In the light the color on it is a light purple and it is pretty. I cant wait to see them with more feathering. lol the waiting is terrible
Here are what my Blues hatched look like:
this one on the Left is newly hatched and still wet and then what it looks like fully dried off in the bin. The other chicks around it are a silver color (Splash) and the Blue is on the left side next to the big Splash in the bin.

It takes some hatching to know what colors will come from chick down. But yours really looks yellow with some gold coming in on the wings. Even if it has a bit of a grey tone to it, I'm just wondering it if might come in with gold tones. If you say it's a light purple, then this will be interesting to see what happens to it's color as it ages. Keep taking pictures so you can see the progression! I do that with my babies. I mark them all and then take a pic of them at hatch and then one as they get older. So fun to go back and see how they started off and it helps when you are hatching to know what they will start out looking like and recognize them right off! :) Here is another picture of my blues as they are aging (still babies): ****and then for reference, you can see the Splash (light silver) on the right.

It looks like it's healing, so at this point I'd leave it alone. I would definitely keep her away from your roosters that are all wanting to jump her. That was a nasty wound, though. If it has been caught early, you could have put antibiotic ointment on it and then packed with vaseline on top to keep everything else out. It doesn't have to be done for long, but just while it's fresh.

Close call on that grass fire!! WHoa, that would have been BAD! Glad you spotted her with it! Crazy dog! Sounds like you are, as usual, VERY busy!!

I candle them and you can usually see movement. If the entire egg is too full of chick (the egg is black) then just assume everything is fine and leave them be. The only time I candle again is to see if they have pipped internally the air sac. At that point, I fill up all the water and lock it down. (around 19 or 20 days)

HA! Good luck out there in the cold! Brrrrrrrr! Not my idea of fun, for sure! The last time I went camping was with my horse and a bunch of girlfriends and I brought a space heater with me and a heating pad! I made sure I bought electric with my camping site, so I could plug it all in and be comfortable. And even with that, my nose and toes felt frozen.

We had a great birthday yesterday with the newly 6 year old. He chose to go to the movies, and we had one of his favorite dinners (home made calzones) and he got to open some gifts. I need to get around because I need to run over to Cheri's Bakery to get his cake for the Sunday party with everyone else.

Been reading about the comments on Brinsea's apparent quality control issues with their incubators. Anyone had any issues with their EcoGlow heaters recently? Thinking about getting one to try, but if I'm going to have quality issues with it I may re-think.

Mustang67 I would have to have a tent heater, heated socks, gloves, down filled sleeping bag and 14 layers of clothes. I don't do cold. I think I remember camping being fun when I was young but for the life of me I can't figure out why. I like controlled temperatures and a nice comfy bed without bugs!

Very quiet here this morning.
I have a little cream legbar chick gasping for air this morning. I hadn't noticed but this one obviously had a yolk issue as well as the one that eviscerated itself. I am sure it has some infection going on. It of course is a girl. The other one that eviscerated itself still has a huge blob of stuff on it's stomach but so far is doing fine. I can't believe that chick is still alive. I don't even know if it still has guts outside it's body. I think the car wreck must have shaken those eggs pretty bad. I was lucky to have any of them hatch.Looks like I will just have a couple boys out of the lot. Figures! I have 4 more eggs in the incubator but I haven't candled them or anything.
I also have a couple of these "d'ulandks" chicks here. They are really stinking cute. I do have at least one or two purebred olandsk from my hen that died though.
DH isn't feeling good today. I sure hope he didn't bring a flu home. He had a flu shot so if he gets it so will I. I know there are some respiratory things as well as some stomach things going through at the Nuke plant right now. I've warned him to wash wash wash and wipe whatever he comes near. I don't need any of that stuff here.
I did it. I broke down and bought some more orpington eggs. I got some nice English type BBS eggs. They weren't cheap. Not that I need more colors but if I get a decent hatch it would be nice. I can always use them to improve type or to just breed as a group. If I understand my genetics right I should be able to breed them with the white orpingtons and produce white chicks with more Fluff. I am trying to get some more Breda fowl eggs but haven't scored any so far. I had some offered to me but it was so cold I didn't want to have them shipped then.
It is impossible to sex these birds yet. They have no combs at all and they are so slow growing I will just have to wait to see what I have.
Patience!!
David I haven't heard any thing bad about an eco glow yet. I do like the prices and versatility a sweeter heater has though. If I were going to buy one I'd probably go that route myself. Just because it would work better for my situation.
