Consolidated Kansas

Just a couple of current photos of the barn. DIdn't get as far along this past week, as the main builder was not here, and kinda mad my DH unhappy. The tin and trim should go up fast if the weather is nice. Sure hope so. The first picture is of the south side. What tin is up, above that is where the "sky light" material will be for natural lighting. I will have regular lights in side. I will also have lots of windows, just not sure where they go, will know more when the tin goes on.

This next picture is looking west thru the barn. You can see the cement pad, that is where my "work room" will be. I will have a sink, fridge, brooder, incubator, hatcher. Book shelf, cabnets hopefully a desk and chair. I am starting to get excited!!

I advertised some of my birds on the poultry swap page, but not had anybody come, so now I going to advertise on craigslist. I need to sell some birds.

I have several breeds to go, so if you want some adult birds, I just may have what you are looking for.
Windy here today too, but I plan on being in the barn most of the day(old barn) and start getting stuff out and cleaned up, and placed in tubs, so when moving day happens, all I have to do, is unload the tubs in the cabinets!!

Danz~~I see nothing wrong with the little trailer, should work really well, I think. I was looking at your puppy pile! Good heavens, how many puppies in in that mess? WoW!!

Karen I tried filing as a business a couple years ago. It got me really nervous because I was loosing so much money and it was going in with my farm income.
So I filed as a hobby and it was beneficial that way.
I would like to see what you do. I don't have quicken or any of those other business programs.
I thought about setting up a spread sheet but haven't gotten it done. I'd love to see your business plan. I have a file i put all of my receipts for feed in. However I haven't done well tracking expenses of new birds or sales I made. Each year I think I am going to keep track but then never manage to do it. If you set up as a business I assume you will be charging sales tax on your birds, eggs, etc?
Checoukan I have 11 pups. Not bad for a first litter.
I am still in total envy of your building. I keep thinking about having a pole/frame building built and doing things right. I have used so much space for my miscellaneous houses and pens I can't put it where I would really like to though. I guess I'll have to settle for cobbled up facilities. I have seen some pretty decent prices for buildings though. I'm sure my customizing would raise the price a bunch. Dreaming costs nothing though.

I forgot to welcome you bbsnooks. Sounds like you are going to have quite an assortment of birds. I see danzsizing happening there. That's what I did. Ordered a bunch of different breeds intending on deciding which one I wanted to raise. Now literally thousands of birds down the road I'm still trying to decide!!

Trish, Here is some quick pics of the camper inside and out that we made a frame for. This is looking on the inside. I opened the back glass to take this. You can see the 2X4s they use for roosts although I see they are crooked right now. The dog must have moved them. They like sitting on that bale of straw so I just left it in there.

Here is the outside with tons of junk around it. You can see my chicken palace trailer in the background across the drive. Sure hope that gets moved in place soon. Also King, my favorite of all chickens (gold laced cochin roo) had to get in the picture.

Welcome gadgetgrl; I don't know anyone who has dorkings. I am thinking KarenS either found some light buff sussex or is looking for some.

gadgetgrl, I did find a source for Buff Sussex, finally. I'll be getting hatching eggs or chicks, this spring. If you would like the contact info for this lady, I'll be happy to get it to you.

OMGosh!! Sooooo cute!

Went back out and finished up. I clicked a few more pictures. You can click these and the previous ones for larger pics. Here they are. First the dog house. This is 6 x 6 X 4 feet wide. I like it cause I can open the top part of the door and almost walk in without stooping very far. I just took the heater I had in there out but still have a heat lamp just in case.

This is the chicken ghetto. The pen is about 20X 20 other than the front right corner which I angled so I wouldn't have to cut the netting to go around a guy wire on a power pole.

And finally nap time for the kids. They were catching the last bit of sunlight for a nap.
Love the ghetto trailer! That is a fantastic idea and I think it looks pretty good. That is a ton of puppies you have there! Those GP's sure are cuties!

Well I made it back from the Klondike Derby in one piece. I agree completely on the camping anymore, but the heater helped me make it through the night. The other scout leader think it funny that I need my creature comforts. I have tent fans for summer camping and the best cot and mattress I could find at Cabela's. I got a camping recliner last year for Father's Day. I may try combining the ceiling fan and the heater for the early March Campout.

I came home to only one Duck egg (normally one or two) and four Chicken eggs. Yesterday there were 8 eggs out of the 10 hens. Hopefully tomorrow the count will be back up.
Glad you made it back in one piece and not missing any toes or fingers to frost bite! hehehe! I'm with you-- I want my creature comforts! I don't care if I get laughed at!

Welcome to the Kansas thread!! Just jump in at any time and ask questions when ever you want, etc. It's just a running dialog that changes as the weather does! ha! Looks like a great list of birds there! You're going to have so much fun with them! Do you have your coop built yet??

Josie- Thank you, I have already washed with soap and water and plucked some feathers. It cleaned up nicely. There is no bad smell. It kind of smells like rawhide really, but not rotted or rancid. My roos dont have pointed ends on their spurs yet. I am going to double check on it though. I got rid of a couple guys and things have settled down. There is no fighting to mate anymore.
YAY for getting rid of the trouble makers. Should be pretty happy around your place now. I hope they are hanging out in the freezer for dinner later....

I've decided to set up my poultry endeavors as a small business this year. Since I hope to put forth efforts to make money to offset feed expense, the IRS is going to view me as a small business anyway.
If there is interest, I'll keep you up-to-date as I set up my small business.
WOW-- I find this really interesting. I want to know more when you get into this. I don't know that I ever want to make a business of out my silkies, but the thought has crossed my mind. But don't think I would need to go so far as creating an entity with a tx ID, as I'm pretty sure my yearly income would be paltry and not much at all!

WOOOHOOOO!!!!! It's coming right along!!! I would be out there with chalk marking off my new room! LOL

Does anyone in Kansas have s/g Dorkings and or light, buff Sussex chicks that will be for sale this spring?
I don't. But I wanted to WELCOME you to the group!! Usually you can find most anything you are looking for here.

LOVE this!! That is brilliant!

Whew, it's been a long day. Had the B-Day party today and I grilled BBQ chicken outside. Ooooh, I love BBQ. I was able to smoke it/cook it and it was just the best chicken ever. I do that so infrequently, I really should do that more often. Went to church first thing this morning and then came home and cooked and everyone had a great time. Been working on a graphic project. Actually this is one, when I get it done, I'll show you!

thanks for the welcome.. its so nice to have a place that is enthusiastic about chickens. I have a once a month friend.. who is also restarting her flock.. but she works allot.. and our talk is minimal in-between. i think i'll feel real comfortable here .. after looking only a few times. Tho.. i'm not sure i know my way around the byc site just yet.
