Consolidated Kansas

Oh Josie sorry you are sick! That's miserable. Did the stapler work for you? Josie got to see my puppies yesterday too.
I had quite a busy day after I finally got moving and am just now getting caught up on skim reading.
I got a gate panel drug across the muddy yard and into a pen. I got it wired to the posts to divide the pen. Then I decided to try to rebuild a gate I had built for another project and didn't like how it fit. I should have just started over. Tearing it apart and trying to make it smaller wasn't smart. But I finally got it built and it is far from lovely. I got a support on the inside divider and was ready to hang the gate but couldn't find any of the 5000 drills we have around here to drive the screws. Hanging the hinges and putting on a latch will finish the job. That means two more breeds separated.
While I was working in the barn I swore I heard a puppy. I started looking and Cloud had one of her puppies out in the barn. She had to have taken it out there yesterday when I had the gate open cause I had left it closed all day today. She must have taken it there to get it out of the storm last night. He was a hungry little pup for sure.
Then I worked at trying to get the chicken tractor moved. The mud just made it that much worse. I put a heat lamp out there just outside of the hut door so if they got chilled they could get some heat. These birds left an 80 degree climate. I finally got them moved out there very late afternoon. I have the little Breda fowl in the house in a chick bin for now.
Yes Hawkeye, these are brahmas and they do have a standard. However this is an entirely new color and I am sure there isn't a standard for this color. Kind of like some of the new Orpington colors. I am sure when they are grown they would show beautifully, however I doubt a 4H kid would spend this kind of money for a bird. The brahmas and the orpingtons have become my main focus these days. I am trying to get and breed exhibition stock in both. I tried taking some pictures but my camera and the birds weren't being cooperative. The lighting was all wrong and they wouldn't hold still. So use your imagination of what these birds will look like when they are full grown. They're gorgeous even though they did loose back feathers on the trip. Hopefully when they've had a few days to settle down I can get better pictures. The partridge lines are really distinct blue lined with gold.

Tomorrow is going to be another insane day. But I'm not getting up at 5AM again, thank goodness.
I Hope to go get some materials to put up some more pens and such.

Hi everyone! I am so far behind so I didn't multi any posts. Hope everyone is well. We are going to try to plan another work weekend Saturday, Feb 23 and are hoping the horse fence posts will be in by then. Let me know if you want to come so I can plan some food! Hawkeye- Good luck with your 4-H demo! Sounds like fun, I hope my kids will be in 4-H. Danz- Glad your birds made it ok and hope your hand is feeling better. Trish- Glad you are getting your pens put together. Hope the weather cooperates. Hechicken- Congrats on the garden patch! What an awesome deal from your neighbor! Sorry to everyone else, my brain is fried tonight. I am getting sick. Ugh! I was an emotional disaster last night and now I know why. I must have caught a cold on the plane ride last weekend. Was very much hoping I would make it through pregnancy without illness but I guess my luck has run out!
josie sorry about you feeling bad. It was nice to see you and your birds yesterday. The girls are doing good thanks again. Danz the birds look good

You will love it here!!

Josie sorry you are sick, it seems to be going around.

Danz- I hope your father is ok.

Well I have all of the 3 month olds from Danz moved from grow out pen to coop. I have to put in more roosts today and its time to take my going on 2 month olds out of the brroder to the grow out pen. They are all feathered and ready to go. I have 3 that are feathering slower that are just a week or 2 behind that batch that will have to stay a bit longer and I hate to split them up sinece they have been together their whole lives. I am afraid that they will be rejected from the group when I reunit them in another week or so

Danz~~ Ivy is on their way down this morning. She said they already had some plans, but if next weekend would work that will work for her.

Well the builders are here, but I don't look for them to be able to do much out side to day, we really got muddy, and DH used clay to build the pad for the building, so it is a sticky mess out there for sure. Maybe they will get the windows, and doors in my workroom, and finish framing it. They have the east side and west side up, only the south side to go. Once they get that up, I hope we can start running and figuring out where the electrical things will go inside the room. Im going to have him build the cabnet where the incubator and hatcher go, just a little lower so I don't have to reach up to put the trays in the units.

Well that north east wind is cold this morning, and I am not moving very fast, so guess I had better git outside and brave it, but I sure don't want too!!

That is a really good point to start planning a watering system. One of the reasons I picked the location I did for them to till, is that there is a well spigot about 10' away so I won't have to drag hoses around. I have a couple of soaker hoses, but I do still need to figure out how to set them up to do the most efficient job. Thanks for reminding me! If you are back at the Extension office and happen to snap a pic of their set up, I'd be interested to see it.

That sucks about the tire. I had one not too long ago, in the Dillons parking lot, and I got out the donut and put it on, only to find that as it hadn't been used in the 8 years I've had the car, it was flat too. I was lucky that there is a Dillons gas station at the other end of the parking lot so I was able to just walk the donut over and put air in, and then it was good to go again.
I was up there last night, but by the time I got there, it was too late to get a good picture. I'll be back up there to pick up some books, so I'll try to remember to snap a picture. I thought it was really smart! I remember your tire story! Ugh, that just sucks. The thing is, that I also have a donut for minivan.... BUT-- oh and this is a VERY BIG "but"... it is screwed under the van in the MIDDLE of the van! In fact, when I had my white van in the shop back in October (the one I totaled out) they had the van up high on a lift and I was looking under and asked them why there is a tire in the middle of the van like that, it seemed like a pretty dumb idea. Then they told me it was a stupid idea and to forget about ever trying to get it out of there. They said that the tire wrench that comes with the van is pretty much useless under there, you don't get enough leverage to get the tire off and it's a mess. They told me then and there, it's easier to call a tow truck than it is to get the tire off. So yesterday when I was looking at my tire on the rim, I remembered what he said and took my chances of driving across the street to the Quick Trip to put in air. It did hold long enough to get to Walmart, and since I found out the tire was destroyed anyway, I think I made a good call! LOL I think that's a pretty big design flaw on this van--- but, here's another but, this van has all the storage in the floors. So I can open up doors in the floor and put in suitcases and backpacks, and my laptop, gear, etc... so if i had to choose having my floor storage or the donut in a better location, I'm going with the storage that I use all the time!

Test test 1. 2. 3. how' m I doin?? looks good from here.. i think the " " thing is goin to work..

that same thing happened to me after purchas a new (to me) car.. parked it at mother's house.. and got in the next day.. and was driving on brick road and thought the "strange rattle wasnt there yesterday?" was it due to the road? .. 8 blocks later at post office.. its not the road.. ooops.

but its gotta B - 5:30 some where?? cheers !
You did great!!! Now you're getting the hang of it! Sounds like everyone has a tire story! LOL But hey, I'm with you on the 5:30 somewhere!

Hawkeye, I'm so excited for you tonight!! Been there done that!! I wish I could be there too help you, but, I'm too far away. Dang the crapolies on the roadways, no telling where that metal came from. Glad you were able to get somewhere to get a tire!!

Well, think the rain is moving out, boy sure got more than they said we would, we need run off bad to fill the ponds here, most, well a lot of the ponds around here are dry, to allmost dry. Our ponds are in ok condition, but need more water.

Danz glad your dad is ok. I worry about mine all the time, but, his condition is stable, but he has only 30% working from 2 heart attacks.

Sent my entry into Pryor this afternoon, Taking 7. 2 cockerels, and 5 pullets. We will see what happens. I think these cockerels should knock there socks off!!!
You're not going to believe this.... NO ONE showed up!

Everyone was sent an email two weeks prior, and then a week prior, and then 3 emails went out THIS week alone, and the last one went out yesterday morning as a quick reminder! I had people contact me to say that Thursday wouldn't work for them, but my next date (on Tuesday) would be fine. So I really, really hope that my next workshop people will be there. I did take a picture of the room set up-- it was really nice. I'll try to post that here later for you to see. YAY for going to Pryor, I'm sooooo envious... I really wanted to do that one. This is just all bad timing, darn it!!!

Hawkeye, I hope you get some good news soon, I know that has to be really stressful just in limbo like that. We all hope you get to stay too! That's a bummer about the tire, it seems like that stuff always happens at the worst time, but then when is a good time to have a flat tire that's destroyed. I hope the rest of your day goes better.

Well I got nothing done on the coop today other than figure out how big to cut my pieces for holding the gate together. I will cut those tomorrow & then I can start putting gates together. I'm hoping my DH comes home right after work tomorrow & maybe he can start putting in t-posts, we'll see. It was raining off & on earlier today & I didn't feel like being out in the rain & cold so I didn't go out. It actually warmed up a little this afternoon, but it was at almost time for me to feed everybody, so I just went out & did that. I've got so much to do tomorrow it's not funny, it will be a very busy day.
Thank you Trish! The stress is kind of getting to me. It's tough sleeping, for sure. Sorry you didn't get anything else done, but it's been raining and kind of a cruddy day to work. I hope you get something done today, I don't know what the weather is supposed to do today, but I hope it's sunny and bright and warmer for you!

I just don't know if I can make this weekend.... I told my DH I wanted to, and he said I can do whatever. But I have a 4-H club meet at the retirement home and all the kids are going to hang Valentines on the doors of the rooms. We had one other thing going on and i can't decide if I want to do it or come out to your house! Sigh. The other thing is an indoor warm event... LOL!!! I'm so sorry you are sick!! I hope it doesn't last long and you'll be back to feeling better quickly. I tend to catch things on planes, too. I now bring a personal hand sanitizer bottle in my purse and use it like crazy. When we went to Disney World last summer, I brought wet wipes, but you can bring a 2 oz of it. Anyway, I cleaned off the arm rests and the trays for the kids, since they are more prone to touch and then put their hand in their mouth or touch my face.

Beautiful Danz!! That color is amazing!! Here's the thing-- if there is a standard for the bird already, then it's easier to be judged on a new color of an existing bird. See what I mean? The judge will still be familiar with what kind of comb, color of legs, and type (body shape) the bird should have and how it should be standing, holding it's tail, etc... Then he can look at the color and see what you were trying to do with it. If he understands what you're doing-- say it's another exisiting color on ANOTHER breed of bird, then you could still win with that bird. That's sort of the goal for most AOV's.. Anyway, the gold on this bird is just stunning! Is that a girl, sure looks girlie to me!

Hi fellow Kansans!!! :) I am new here and live in Haysville! There's a lot of us Kansans it seems!
WELCOME!!!!!!!!! So, so, glad to have you here on the thread!! I'm just south of Haysville a bit, so we're neighbors!
big_smile.png
DO you have kids that are 8yrs old and up?? If so, we have a 4-H club right off Meridian south of Haysville and the end-date for signing up for a Project is March 1st. You don't have to have animals to be in 4-H. We have city kids and farm kids, so it's a nice mix. Of course if you want to get into poultry (making a wild assumption since you are HERE--hahaha!) I'm in charge of the poultry project!

Sorry all-- that was a shameless plug for our 4-H club! LOL But hey, they are RIGHT HERE probably like 3 miles from the club.

Okay, so more bad news. I was picking out a couple of birds to take up to the workshop yesterday and I noticed (thank goodness) that one of my girls is not doing well. She is fluffed up, hunched over and by herself and has a messy rear! I'm thinking it's coccidiosis!!! But of course, since i've never had it in my flock, I don't have Corid on hand. So, I brought her in and she is in my kitchen right now to stay warm and I gave her Tetroxy (which I read can ease the bowl infection caused by the protozoa) and I'm going to run out here in a minute to go buy the Corid. So, I better get going. By the time I get back... if you all have ANY other ideas let me know what I should be treating for.

Here's a full run down of her symptoms:
1. hunched over and fluffed up
2. messy rear like she's been having diahrrea
3.when I pick her up, she groans and acts like she's in pain
4. lethargic and having a hard time standing
5. Not wanting to eat the food or water I'm setting out for her.
6. still have good weight on her-- but I could have caught this early at this point.
7. just very quiet and drowsy acting.

Like i said... I'm thinking coccidiosis..... but if this rings another bell for you, let me know!! She's also a young bird-- under a year of age-- about 8 months. She WAS fed medicated feed for the first 12 weeks of her life, but perhaps with them having the plastic wrapping around their pen it allowed for moisture to build up???? (oh-- going to remove and change out the bedding, too)

OH-- and of course, she is my #2 pullet that always gets second place. UGH, ugh!!

Hawyeye, sorry about last night.
the bird, when did you worm her last also, kinda sounds like cocci, young birds get it more than older birds, Why do you have plastic wrap around the pen?

Hi fellow Kansans!!! :) I am new here and live in Haysville! There's a lot of us Kansans it seems!

Welcome mrsdanamiller! Yes, there are quite a few of us here in Kansas, kind of spread around, but quite a few of us around the Wichita area. Feel free to tell us about yourself & your birds, what kind do you have? There are some on here that just lurk & don't post much & those of us who post all the time. Just jump in any time, we chat about a lot of things on here.

Danz, Haysville is south of Wichita kind of west of Derby just a few miles if you know where Derby is. It's one of the towns included in the metro area for Wichita. Those Brahmas are beautiful, kind of like the blue lacing I'm hoping to have on the Barnvelders I'm getting only blue, not gold. I hope your hand is doing better & your dad too.

The weather sure isn't cooperating well with my building plans yesterday or today. Yesterday it was wet & chilly & today just more chilly & cloudy, no sun here, at least not right now. I'm hoping to at least go out & cut the corner pieces for my gates in the garage & maybe I can just carry the wood up here & screw them together in there instead of outside. Darned weather anyway, I'm so ready for spring. I hope we do have a spring this year instead of going right from winter into the heat.

I know! I don't have time to be sick and I am down for the count! It hurts to sneeze a lot more than usual the baby sure doesn't like it! The puppies are adorable, its a good thing I wasn't there for long or I would have been hauling that one with the badger face that was laying in the dog house off to the car.

Haven't used the stapler yet, either today or tomorrow depending on how slowly I move. Thank you so much for letting us borrow it! We are moving the cats down today too so I need to start rounding them up here in a few minutes. That should be a fun time!
Oh Josie sorry you are sick! That's miserable. Did the stapler work for you? Josie got to see my puppies yesterday too.
Beautiful! I love brahmas.

So much for allergies! I was really thinking that was it but it kept getting worse throughout the day. Glad the girls are doing well!

Danz the birds look good

No worries, don't kill yourself. I may not even be out there working at the rate I am going. I will probably we dying on the couch. Thank heavens we have a couch there now. If you want to wait and think you could make it out in two weeks even if its just for a little bit we are going to be putting up horse fencing then and I could really use your expert advice so we don't waste time making mistakes. I really want a nice pretty straight horse fence and your fencing looks so nice!

Oh no! I hope she feels better. I don't really know what that could be but I had a cockerel that got sick like that and maybe he had coccidia? I never thought to treat him for it and he was really thin too. Is she thin?

Alrighty, I need to get off my butt and load up the trailer with all the cats stuff. Yes, our cats have a trailer worth of stuff that needs to move with them....I am so tired though, I just want to crawl back in bed.
