Consolidated Kansas

Oh, my, lets not get our thread shut down here, I would be lost with out it. I don't post as much as some, as I don't always have anything to say. We are all good people here, everyone take a deep breath, and lets move forward.

Checoukan, have you talked to Chase. I think he said he just called you a left a message. You've been missing in action lately. I really love your input and we all are watching your barn progress.

Good luck! Isn't it exciting???
Okay-- there are SO MANY reasons I love this picture! LOL The hoop coop is amazing!! I LOVE it! What do you have over the top? The front of it is so charming. And then the boardwalk-- I love it so much, I googled how to make one! How did you make this board walk and do you have any tips about it?
Hey Hawkeye I built a couple of these structures as foot bridges. Very simple design. Depending on how big a curve you want start with anything from a 2X8 to a 2X 12 pressure treated board. I used a string hooked to a pencil and drew my first curve at the top of the board. It really doesn't take much of a curve to create the curved look I think for a 6 foot foot bridge I probably had about 6 foot of string from the central point. You can experiment with it. Use as much of the board as you can. Note: If you are going to just set this on the ground you actually don't need to cut the bottom curve. But if using for a foot bridge or more ascetic appearance do the following: After you draw the first circle, then drop down at least 6 inches from it and mark your inner circle. I just went about every 6 inches or so and made marks and then lined between them so they were consistent with the top curve. Ultimately you want the curve to end so both ends are the straight flat original edge of the boards. I like have a minimum of 6 inches on each side with a flat bottom. I cut the curve on top and bottom with a jig saw.
Then you need to screw on 1 X pressure treated boards all across the top surface. Leave a small gap between each one like you would if you were building a deck. You can choose the size of boards you use. I like using the 5/4 decking boards that are about 5 1/2" inches wide. Seriously you can build this in an afternoon and you'll be so proud of it. Maybe I can find a picture of one of mine that I have built.

Glad Jorgie is going to be okay... WHat was he having done? Was he becoming a "gelding"? hehehe I don't know what you call boy dogs that are cut. And okay-- WHOA, you are super crazy busy! Yesterday was like that for me! I was driving and going between all of my volunteer jobs. I called my DH at one point and told him that since I know i'm going to get a job this Fall, that I was sooooo sad, I really enjoy my volunteering for the church and my elderly lady and all the other stuff in between. :(
Speaking for Karen. Jorgie had severe leg/hip problems and was in terrible pain. It was quite an extensive operation.
WOW-- this is looking so nice! I love these hoop coops! I'm so tempted to get started on one right now! They look so economical, too... I like cheap.

It's a fun build. Seriously I like the idea that you can make it just about any size you want. I was thinking about making one for my ducks to separate breeds but DH said I should just buy some 4' high kennels. That wouldn't give them shelter though.
Beautiful birds! I can't believe the color on your cochin roo! WOW! And looking at his foot feathering-- whatever you paid, I'd say it was worth it. He looks VERY nice! UGH, sorry you are still painting! I hope you can finish up quickly.

This is SO NEAT!! Our club (or county) should totally do something like this to raise money for the poultry project so I can flippin' buy show coops for our county barn! :) I've been thinking of ideas to raise money, and this is a fantastic idea. I love it! SO glad you are involved in this and doing the testing!
I think it will be a win win. Especially since Burlington just voted to allow chickens in town last year. Plus there is nothing in the area people can go to. It's also nice it is being held at the fairgrounds because that way they don't have to pay any rent to hold it.
I made a page just for my chickens (silkies) and it's worked out well. I was getting a lot of flack about all of the chicken pics on my personal FB page. So I separated it out, and it works out great. Then you can just link to your album.
I need to do that as well. I was thinking of doing the web page though.
These are amazing pictures!!! I love Royal Palms! My Seymore used to display like that too! She'd do it just to get my attention and when I'd come up and pet her, she'd start squawking and get all happy she was being pet. She loved to jump on me when I sat down and settle herself into my lap and softly talk. They are just neat birds! That white cat is HUGE-- and beautiful! I'm glad he's doing better. What a pretty boy.
Congrats on the goats! I want pics!! :)
Glad you got your spot leveled out with the tiller! Sounds like you are on your way to having more room/coops! YAY! That went fast! You sure get a lot done when you're on a roll like that! I hope your turkey hatch for you! Very cool they are laying already! So far, everyone has quit on me... and guess who is laying now?? The Wyandottes!! Of course!
I am hoping to have a few top quality Barred rocks start laying soon. Actually there might be some blue barred rocks in the mix which are to die for gorgeous. If so I'd be glad to fix you up. I can't speak for them though when they will crank out eggs.
X2 I'm going LaLaLaLaLaLaLaLa... fingers in ears, eyes closed.... Not hearing this!!! Please, PLEASE use that PM button!!!

No one wants to feel like they are being purposely drawn into a fight! I'm going to go with Michael Jackson and say "I'm a lover, not a fighter!"

Hey Danz-- here in a few I'm running over to Josie's to go get my new Cornish!!
yippiechickie.gif
I am NUTS, I know. But I do have the room and I am going to put him in with my layers. They have been missing a roo since last summer when I got rid of the two that were in there with them. I'm hoping he might be nice enough to show, and if we take him to a show or two, maybe sell him to someone who also has Cornish who would appreciate him. And if not.... then I might be tempted to keep him and buy him a nice girlfriend and set up a date??

weeeee!!! Talk about my DH killing me!!

I just think they are the coolest little birds!!
I hope you like him. You will notice he has a bare spot on his tummy. I was told by this guy before I ever hatched that that is expected. If they don't wear the feathers off their tummy they aren't the proper form. I looked at pictures from the International Cornish association shows and every one of them have the bare belly. Just so you know it really isn't a fault. He is one heavy bird. You could get a nice big meal out of him. I hope he does well and doesn't get a cold or something from being moved. I treated that pen with Ivermectin about 2 weeks ago so he should be good for worming etc. I had not seen any sign of mites at all in that house, but it never hurts to make sure. It might be time for an outbreak if there were any eggs. I do hope you like him. I love those legs myself. If you decide to get a female I could give you Al's information and I am fairly sure he would sell you some eggs.
Aw Trish that was so sweet. I never even got a Happy Valentines day.

Actually I forgot it was valentines day until late in the evening. I didn't do anything for him either so I am equally as guilty. I used to make a big issue of it but it was pretty much one sided so I don't bother much now. DH is not the romantic type at all, but I'm used to it.

Hey you all creative people, I should have my gates all put together tomorrow & I'm planning to do the carabiners & eyes for kind of "hinges" on my t-posts, but how can I secure them on the non-hinge side? I could use eyes & clip hooks, but what would I clip to? I'm afraid my creativity with this project is just lacking this time, I need help!

I got 5 OSB boards for Valentine Day :) I look at it as a very romantic gesture because he is supporting my lifestyle! For my birthday (next week), he is making me nest boxes :) We agreed all our gifts to each other would be to support the life here.

That's awesome Sunflower. Trish what are you hooking the gates to? Can you take a quick picture? Are you building the wooden gates? I'll bet we an all come up with something. I need to get moving. It is cold outside so I have been dragging my feet. I need to go feed dogs and birds. Don't know that I'll want to stay out and work though. I hate cold!!

Alright, calling all math whizes!! Got to figure out the dosage for NeoMed 325. Got to provide 10 mg's of Neomycin Sulfate per 1 pound of body weight. 1 teaspoon treats 160 lbs. I wanting to mix 1 gal batches, and treat everybody for 5 days. The birds I am treating are some of my show birds.
idunno.gif
To much of the neomycin will kill. So I have to be real careful. I am working on it, but want to see what everybody else comes up with. The packet weighs 3.5 oz. or 100 g. The packet contains 50 g neomycin.

Congratulations on the doelings - I have to say you are very brave to take on bottle babies! You will have to take some pics as soon as they arrive - there is nothing cuter than a kid.

I'm so sorry I missed this until Hawkeye commented - I had to go back a few pages to find it. I agree with Hawkeye that you would need a full body shot in order to get good feedback. There are several pictures you can take. First, while the bird is standing, look down and directly over, and take a photo from a bird's eye view. Then, with the bird at a 90 degree angle to you and looking straight ahead, take the photo so that you can see the whole body. Last, stand behind the bird and at the same level, and as she walks away from you, take a picture that shows the butt/tail. The other important information is breed. Different breeds should have different "type", so what is good on one breed, would be a fault on another. This has more to do with the shape of the bird - some should be "gravy bowl" shaped, others round like a basketball, etc. Oh - but the other thing to tell you is that that bird looks very young and you really can't get a good critique until she has matured, as they often take some time to fill out and take the shape they should. I've seen some pics of 4 month olds that I thought looked like a horrible representation of their breed and then you see them again at a year old and they've filled out in all the right places and turned out to be very true to type. So I wouldn't worry too much at this age anyway.

Yes, Danz, I don't remember if I commented on your hoop coop but it is looking really good, and you've made a lot of progress in a short amount of time. Glad you were able to get the site cleared for it and get it moved. Hawkeye, they really are pretty economical. Think $20 for each panel, and then there is the lumber and tarp and those are the main expenses. A few screws/nails, some wire or zip ties to tie the panels together, and some hardware for the gate. If you already have some of those things, you can build it pretty darn cheap. I took WichitaKidd's advice to heart about lumber and went and got all I would need for two hoop coops before the prices go up. I had a crazy experience at Lowe's when I went to get the last of the lumber. Their treated 2x4's were cheaper than the non-treated - can you believe that? Only 3c cheaper (2.87 for treated vs. 2.90 for untreated) but still, it made it an easy choice on which one to get.

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your Cornish roo - I've always liked the look of them too. I wonder if the Cornish over the Barred Rocks would create a good meat bird....

I'm glad you said this - you and I were posting at the same time and I would have never gone up to see your post if you hadn't said this!!!
I took pictures!! They are coming! :)

I agree with you Hawkeye you just can't beat those Barred Rocks for laying. I have one new pullet I got from Eileen left that is doing really well, I hope nothing happens to her because I figure as many eggs & double yolkers that the two I have had have laid that they will burn out early. I'm planning to get a couple blue barred hens from her when I go back up her way next month.

My DH had a dozen red roses delivered to me yesterday afternoon, they're just beautiful, & then he came home with not only candy, but a really pretty card too. He's not that good about getting me cards, so I was impressed. It made up for him not telling me he was going to the gym after work & supper was kind of dry by then.

I will get pics of the baby doelings when I get a chance to get down there, they're down in Parkerville at my friend's house, which is just east of Arkansas City. Well I've got a lot to get done today, so I had better finish my coffee & get to it.
Wow, that is so sweet of your DH! I got a dozen roses last night, too! And my DH brought home chinese for dinner! (one of my favorites!!) so I didn't have to cook! That's a "win" in my book! Can't wait to see the pictures!

What about a small chain and use a carabiner through the two ends? I have my horse gates rigged up sort like that, because my gelding can unlock any normal horse gate. He's so bad. Maybe take a picture of what the gate looks like-- I'm good at figuring out how to lock thing.

YAY!!! That is a great gift!! Seriously, if my DH came home with wood, I'd be super excited! LOL I think that is a great idea on your gift giving!

Aww, I'm terrible at math! But if Danz gets back on, she's great at figuring out this stuff! I don't even want to attempt it. I usually google until I find someone else figured it up, and then check their math.

Okay, I just got back from Josie's new place. LOVE her place! I am drooling over her neat covered front porch that wraps around the house! Nice! And I am so envious at how she is building her new poultry pens-- great ideas going on over there!

Okay, and here is the new Cornish roo. I might name him Charlie. I'm still thinking, but that kind of fits him. He was stressed out from the trip and the kennels (he had to be transferred to mine) and I set him up in a bachelor quarter. Actually-- it's one of my unused horse stalls. So he has a 12 X 12 ft area all to himself. There is a roost in there from when Seymore used to use it. So I'm guessing he can fly, maybe he can get up on the roost...? I'm so used to silkies and my big fat layers that don't fly! LOL

This is his new bachelor condo low-rise, low rent headquarters. It's the last horse stall on the end. I sure hope he can't fly over that?? Danz, do you think he can fly over that?? Its about 7 or 8 feet tall...I forget. I just know that Seymore my turkey could fly over that NO problems. I hope I don't have to go hunt him down! eeks!!!

Ok, braved the cold north breeze out there brrr.

Here are some current photos of the barn. Seems like its a long ways from being done, but its not. They are putting up the doors to keep the weather out.
First picture is of the south side.

They didn't have enough of the insulation to finish the roof, but that area is open anyway.
This picture is of the the inside and of my "work" room.

You can see the two north windows. I will have a door, and two windows on the east, and a door going to the west.
This next shot is of the north side of the barn. I believe everything is done on this side.

This north side has 4 windows, 1 walk in door, and one "garage" door, so I can open for summer ventalation.
We did not run the skylight material all the way, as where the white stops is about where my work room starts.

This picture was taken looking west. They are getting the other garage door ready to go on, that way the back of the barn will be enclosed. Still have one garage door to go on here on the east side. The east side of my work room, and above it will be in red. My room will be insulated, my sink will be directly behind the window opening you see here on the right. I am hoping the skylight material will allow enough light thru so I dont have to run the lights, but if I do, I would not think it would be any more that what it is now.
