Maybe what we need is an automated scarecrow that comes to life from any airborne approaches. It can yell, shake it's fist and let go with a thunderous fart. Wouldn't be our fault if the hawk/owl mistook it for a gunshot, would it.

Danz ~ thanks for the suggestion of giving the hen some oil. I had wondered if there was something that might help get it out of her system. As to advice, I have found through the years that most of the advice I give is quickly brushed aside by other suggestions. For every question there is as many answers as there are people answering. LOL Like someone I know would say ~ It's all good!! What works for one, might not for another or vice versa. The more suggestions, the better chance of something working.

The hen is doing fine this morning. Perking right along. Her crop was down a lot by noon yesterday and during the night was down to about a ping pong ball size. She is eating and drinking, etc. I made sure that the grit pan is full. Some oil is worth a try for sure.

I also figured out a way to mark a bird to spot them fast. She is the basic color as several other hens, generally the black tailed white jap color/markings. I had just found while cleaning a stick of the colored wax stuff used to mark sheep. This one is red, so I smeared some on the end of her tail so I could spot her, but hopefully the others would not pick on her (if they could catch her, he he) It is working, I just look for that red smear and it is so much easier. Now to find the stick of blue.

maidenwolf ~ I have no advice on the predators, everything I know has been said at one time or another. I also hate them and wish they would hunt the wild areas and leave us alone. BUT I am GREEN with envy!!!! You have GREEN Grass!! My birds have made my yard grassless years ago.

I'm green with envy (but happy for all of you) with the out buildings, barns, etc., and all the land. Perhaps in a few years, after the girls are gone, we will be able to find something outside the city limits.

I would love to go down to Good Shepherd sometime. Perhaps when I have evaluated which birds will be required to take retirement during the next few months.

Well, I guess that the neighbors re-roofing caused the best laying Ancona to molt. She's dropped all her flight feathers over the past week or so. I'll have to see how long her vacation is going to last.

Maidenwolf I use dogs and netting. They are both invaluable.

Ugh. It is sad. I would do the best I could to remove plastic, shiny things and any string. String is the worst -- you don't want to have a bag of feed with a loose string on it anywhere near the chickens cause they just don't have good sense and will go right for that string. I had to pull it out of a chickens mouth before, but it did come easily, unlike Maidenwolf's ill fortune with yarn.

Chickens will graze through horse and goat manure and that's considered just normal chicken behavior. Lots of people have LGD's (Livestock Guardian Dogs) that live with their chickens and I'm sure they aren't out there scooping poop or, worse, diapering their dogs, so I don't think you have any worries with the dog poo. Go for it girl!
This is a blessing with GPs. They won't poop where they live. Mine always go outside their area to go. No poo in the yard thank goodness. However the pups made a heck of a mess and the chickens were digging through it. Gross!!! I figured it was because it was full of chicken feed the dogs had eaten.
I could just hear that rooster saying, "You're not getting away with stealing our food. We are just taking it back. So there!!!"

Danz, what kind of oil do you think? Mineral oil? I'm going to file this away just in case something like this comes up later. Oh, I'm glad you found a crock pot method. That's the way I make mine and I really like being able to watch it do it's thing!
Oh no use vegetable oil. You don't want anything they wouldn't normally consume.
My understanding is that hawks are protected too.

Taz, I get it! I enjoy doing laundry with my homemade soap far more than I ever did with the old name brands! It does save me a substantial amount with all these people in the house. I mean, I'm not going to get rich from the endeavor but every little savings adds up. I'm sure the powder works just as well as the liquid. It's good stuff! So you can probably make your own powdered automatic dishwashing soap from that base as well. I make a liquid for my dishwasher from the laundry soap, just add a bit of citric acid and salt and it is awesome. A little diluted white vinegar for the rinsing agent works like a charm on the spots!
I'm loving my home made soap. Even if no one but me appreciates it I feel I am saving a fortune and putting a lot less chemicals back into the ground.
We'll have to make a trip up in the van, everyone can book a seat space plus space to bring back birds and we'll go. I took DH's car for better gas mileage this trip and it was a good thing since I over shot the turn off by 30 minutes! LOL! Life.

This really did work for my duck. She was wheezing and could hardly breath. I didn't know for sure if it was something stuck or what. But yep within a few hours she was fine and she had been near death.

Oops, it was Chickies-Duckies with the yarny hen. Well, I so hope the vegetable oil helps. It would be very good to know if it happens here. Chickens are just silly.

You all got me worried so I went out and picked up the two bags of trash the pups had gotten into and strung every where. Too bad it is so windy. I'd love to get this stuff burned.
Better get back out there and get busy.It's certainly not as warm or nice as the said it would be. Dang it!

I have lots of area for them to roam but since my numbers have recently been rising,,,, that grass I have maintained for awhile will go fast... That is just one of the downsides to livestock huh?

Oh Karen, you are hilarious, you made my day!

Let us know when you want to make another trip to the poultry farm, I will try to have some money next time, I would love to see that operation! Even if I didn't bring back birds I would still like to go.

I went & picked up pallets from Arkansas City today while my DH was at the gym, I got 7 free ones. 3 of them are really heavy duty, the other 4 are just regular ones. I have one here already, so I think I should have enough now to put together a small goat shelter. I'm thinking of putting OSB over the pallets, that would be cheap enough, but it would for sure have to be painted then. I have some roofing material left over that I probably will use. I also have tin that I could use if I wanted to, I got it free also. It's just kind of a pain to work with, but that's really why I got it. I'll get it figured out, but it won't be for a few days. The weather doesn't sound like it's going to cooperate too well the next few days. I'm so ready for it to stay warmer, brrr. The wind here today is cold!
