What about electric fencing? That is what everyone on this group was telling me to do when Fern was hit. It was easy, cheap and fast to put up. The charger is the only real expense. The posts were 99 cents each, the insulators and wire was very cheap. I love my electric fence and my dogs can't get out at all unless I open the driveway for them. We are going to actually expand the fence and outline the entire property in due time.

Can you do what Sunflower does? She uses the above ground electric fence? If it's low enough, and not too high, it might work? Or you could even do that with the Invisible fence-- string it up? We put "gates" on our electric fencing with the horses, they made these handles that have a spring built into it so you can hook it and take it down to let tractors, trucks pass thru and then just hang it up again. The sound and the smell is a deterrent alone on the electric fencing. Might be cheaper than the I.F.?? Anyway, whatever you decide, I hope it works. Have you thought about just using T posts and woven wire for the front part of your yard to keep the birds in? Since you're not really using it for predator patroll, I wonder if you could even just use chicken wire and put it up on t posts? That would be cheap and it would confine the birds. I wouldn't be too worried about the expensive fencing-- just whatever is cheap and easy for you to put up yourself. Heck, I'd even use snow fencing if that was cheaper! ha!
Guess I should have finished reading all the posts before posting about the fencing :) Yes - I LOVE my electric fence - just so easy and works! I only have a single wire that is 18 inches from the ground (Holly crawls under it and one day she'll get a nice surprise! But, she won't go anywhere without Sam, so I'm not too worried about her.) Sam completely respects the fence and I do believe they can hear the clicking noise it makes. I also put an orange tie ribbon on each strand of wire to help them with a visual of the wire so they don't accidently run into it down in the field. The electric fence is the best thing I've ever done and gives me 100% security that the dogs are safe. It also helped yesterday - the people across the street had company who brought their dogs - the dogs came running over to our property and stopped dead in their tracks when they saw the fence! (Again, I think they can hear the clicking). The dogs were really nice and are used to livestock and chickens - they just wanted to come say "hi" I think :) But - the fence might help keep out stray dogs some other time that may not be so friendly.

I just went out and found that I had lost one of my three white orpington hens. Ouch! I have one rooster who wasn't doing well at all today and I don't think he will make it. He is a beautiful splash Maran but I can get by without him if I need to. I still have many sick, but I think those that are drinking the denagard water are getting better. This was unreal. I had a bunch of starlings fly in a few days ago and they didn't get in that chicken pen but they very well could have pooped as the group flew over. These are all birds I hatched and raised other than couple of Reese pullets. They came down with it so fast and got so sick. I may loose a few more. I have some that are still in distress. I'll just keep treating them and hope they survive and I don't spread it to the other pens.
Hawkeye we just can't seem to get conductivity. Of course we haven't tried since got some snow which might have helped wet at least the surface of the ground. I've been reading up on making electrical systems work. Part of the problem may be tons of buried junk around here. This place was just covered with 100 years of farm parts, wire and you name it in the ground and on top. I can dig about anywhere and come up with rusty metal. And I think my dogs would just blow through an electric fence and be scared to come back.
I planned to have the front and West side of the yard fenced. It really isn't as simple as it could be. I have to have two access gates.....one for our cars and the other for farm equipment. Which means wooden corner posts and gate posts. It's right at 1000 feet to go across the front of the yard and up the side abut 330 feet to meet the existing fence out back. We would have to have the gate set in some distance to allow for Fed ex, UPS, and the mailman to pull in. Plus we would have to install an auto gate opener or DH would never get out and open and close a gate. I know him to well. He'd open it once and complain and it would never get closed again. The other gate could be opened as we needed it so it wouldn't have to be anything fancy. For just that much fence with no gates I got an estimate of $5000 just using t post and field fence to install it. I about fell over! I was considering the sport dog fence for the rest of the land simply because I could probably do it for $1500 to $2000 depending on where I take it. Sometimes it would be much simpler if I either had at least 640 acres or just maybe 5 around the house.
I got a call and Fluff is out of surgery and doing okay. He'll be sleeping this afternoon and I can pick him up tomorrow.
I guess all in all if I could just get rid of the person that shot Cloud all would be okay. I may go buy a post pounder next week. Ours is so heavy I can't lift it. At least I could maybe put in some posts for a different pen for the geese. I would like to be able to move their pen around, the reason for buying electric poultry netting in the first place.
I've asked myself a few times the last couple days if it is worth it. If I got rid of all the birds and the dogs and I wouldn't have to worry. But I would be so miserable! I am so hoping I don't loose any more. I really really believe they are worth it!!!

Danz- I hope you are feeling better. I know the situation you are in is eating you alive and it can really make you ill fast. Please take care of yourself. I am a true believer in karma and he will get whats coming to him. I wish I could do more to help.

Things have been rough here lately. I am having a down day and the pain and fatigue is killing me. I am going to look for a support group. I need a group of people to talk with. I sure hope this flare up ends soon I really want to get out and garden. It would be good for me, mentally and physically. Thank you to all who have sent well wishes and support it helps more than I can explain.

My electric fence crosses 2 driveways and I don't have a gate. You just put a rubber handle on a separate wire. I think the handles were a dollar each or something like that. You hook/unhook as needed. When you unhook it, you cut the power off to that piece of wire - when you hook it, you hook it back to a live wire.

I talked to Josie and she recommended the in ground fencing. I really want to put a real fence on the front part of my yard area to make sure the ducks, geese and chickens stay out of the road. The estimates I have for that are unheard of. But I am researching and considering the sportdog fencing. It would still cost me thousands to fence because of the farm land. The way things are sitting I can't run the wire where I would like because the farm equipment would cut through it. I am trying to decide what to do. I don't think I could afford to pay someone to install it. Do you have any idea what the costs are for that? I would have to have thousands and thousands of feet of wire installed and at least two collars. Also with a pyrenees and their long hair I've heard that often you have to shave their neck under the collar. I'm not sure Marshmallow would ever let me do that. I see there are some pretty pricy points for long haired dogs you can purchase but because of their undercoat I'm not sure that even works. If you read this Josiechick, let me know what you've done with Molly and Lucy.
Yes Fluff is a very easy going boy. He's been a nervous mess the last few days. I want him to feel safe and secure again and know if he is here he will be okay. He's sure been getting his fair share of dog biscuits!!! When the coyotes went off and he started working last night I saw him do his doggy smile and knew he was at least happy to be working.
So sorry to hear that Fluff has been traumatized.

I think she'll be fine. But yeah, that is a rooster injury, poor thing. I would just keep an eye on it, and smell it-- make sure it doesn't stink like infection. If it smells like normal chicken smell, she's healing. I would go ahead and buy her a hen saddle. I have a few on hand for my girls, too. Just keep the saddle on until she's completely healed. The saddles cost only like $3.00, and I bought mine from a lady on BYC that makes them with snaps! I LOVE them. You can trim the spurs, or you can take them off. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to remove the spurs with the least amount of trauma/pain. There is the "hot potato" method and the twisting spur removal method-- all of which look really easy. My birds don't grow big spurs, so I've never done it. But I did see a judge show people how to do it at a show last year. He just held the rooster, and starting gently twisting back and forth on the spur-- sort of like rolling it with his fingers. Then before too long, it just pulled right off. The rooster didn't even know it and it was done and over with in like two minutes.

I don't smell anything and DH didn't smell anything this morning when he sprayed the Vetricyn. I'll make sure to smell it when I get home tonight. I will also be taking her inside and put her in the dog kennel for a few days to make sure she is completely healed. I put a saddle on her a week ago so hopefully she will be OK. I will go watch some videos to de-spur the roosters.

Danz, just hate to see things keep happening to you and your birds. Those quotes for fences/electric fences are expensive!!! The previous owner put in electrical fences for their horses. I bet that was expensive after seeing your numbers. Thanks for the tips on keeping the Salmon hen away from the flock until she heals. I put a saddle on her a week ago and will be reading up and looking at videos on how to de-spur the roosters.

Don't give up, yes it is all worth it, and between all your contacts on this board there must be a solution. I am sure you are not the only one with this issue. I sometimes see free fencing on Craigs list - sometimes people just want to get rid of their old fencing.
