Consolidated Kansas

Sitting in motel room in Ottawa. Got in at 3:30 last night from racing in Mo, wow what a long day.
Chicken math at its most? Going to meet Danz shortly and get about 50 birds! Yes, you cann all be jealouse now :))
Then we get to meet Trish.

Maybe we'll run into each other! I wasn't able to go last year and I was really upset. I can't wait to see all the beautiful chickens and hear the symphony of crows.

What chickens are you showing?
we most likely will :) I show silkies, polish, and americanas. But my silkies always do best

I am jealous! I wish I had the space to have more chickens.

I'm over 70 pages behind. I know I missed all kinds of great stuff. We just spent the entire week messing with trees. I may have already talked about this; I can't even remember! The night we had the 92 mph wind gusts, a lot of trees or parts of trees fell in McPherson. We spent a day cleaning up our own mess, and that of some family members. We got some chunks of sycamore from two big limbs that fell in my nephew's back yard. Then DH saw in the paper someone near us was asking for bids to remove a giant chunk of tree from their yard. By the time we got there, the brush had already been hauled off. We said we'd remove the rest for free if they didn't mind us cutting it up there. There was no way we could haul it off any other way. They were thrilled, we were thrilled. Then we found another giant pile of wood. Then the the people from the paper had the rest of the tree cut down and offered us that wood, as well. Our entire week (did I mention DH was on vacation) was spent chainsawing and hauling chunks of wood to our house. We did get about 8 hours of splitting in, but you can barely see the dent! We have 2 to 3 years worth of fire wood. Not that anyone's worried about winter heating right now.

So far the chickens have been handling the heat pretty well. I check their water a lot. Twice now it has gone empty at the end of the day, even though there were 4-6 inches of water in it just an hour earlier. I wonder if, when it gets down to a certain point, it's emptying the rest of the water out?

Our 20th anniversary was Tuesday. We spent it messing with trees.

The best thing that happened was when we found a HUUUUGE grub and I took it home to give to the chickens. I got a good 15 minutes of entertainment out of watching grub football.

It's a rainy day here. I can't believe all the rain ... in July .... I hope everyone in Kansas is getting some good rain; we all need it.

I kill the black snakes around here. They can be very aggressive, eat eggs and chicks. I wish they would just eat these nuclear mice we have. Nothing seems to kill them!!!
Busy busy day today but I hope it will be the end of bird selling for awhile other than chicks. Probably about Tuesday I'll start advertising chicks. I can't keep feeding them and I really need room so they have to go soon.
I got the ducks sold yesterday so hopefully the feed bill will start going down. I am down to just one barrel of feed though and that only lasts about 2 days.
Maidenwolf it was so good to see you again and I was happy to meet your beautiful daughter and your husband. I hope the birds are doing well. I can see you daughter is going to be a gentle soul like you.
I lost two peachicks yesterday. They were out of a very young pair. I haven't had time to watch to make sure they were eating so it's probably my fault. They were only a couple days old. I've got to get back to normal routine soon.
I've got to be in Topeka tomorrow even though I really need to be at home. Things come at the most inopportune times.
I am so ready for things to slow down and have some time to myself again.
Well I'd better get moving. I have things to get ready before we start butchering.
Maybe this evening I can crash early.
I've had a few experiences with black snakes. One that comes to mind was when I cut through a hollow log. There were several branches hanging down that were a nuisance when I was mowing under the tree. I did what I knew better not to do and was cutting overhead with a chainsaw, and not knowing the limb was hollow; it cut through quicker than I planed. As the limb fell, it knocked me down. As I got up I noticed I was covered in blood, and thought the saw got me. But as I was counting my arms and legs, I noticed several parts of, I guess, two large black snakes came slithering from the hollow limb.

Cherwill, quit hogging all the darned rain. We haven't gotten any and it looks like a drought around here again. Big cracks forming again. It has been north, south, east and west of us but not here. One day last week I was talking to my sister who was in town. It was pouring and we never got a drop.
I desperately need some rain.
Downy chick, nope that didn't reduce any of the number getting butchered. These were all lemon cuckoo orpingtons, Oh and two ducks. I butchered 7 roosters. Should have been 8 but I forgot about one and 7 ducks. Believe me that was more work than I want to do again in a while. I think Rooster said he had counted 57 birds, and he transported 7 more for Trish.
Then I gave one rooster away I was going to butcher. And sold 9 Swedish flower hen breeders, 9 more ducks, probably at least 30 Swedish flower hen chicks, and 10 guinea keets. Other than selling some more chicks I am hoping to be done selling for a while. It's time to clean and reorganize pens and figure out the future plans.
