I know it is hard to see, but there is an EE chick that lives with this group of Muscovy ducks. There are three hens in this pen and the babies are able to free range but stay within range of the pen where the hens are located. The little EE chick is about two weeks old and was hatched by one of the Muscovy hens. In the top photo it is next to the wire behind the baby Muscovy and to the right of the hen. In the middle photo it is turned away, and near the top food pan and to the left of the hen at the top. And it is in the bottom picture somewhere but I can not spot it. I caught it once and put it with a Silky hen and her chicks but it got out and returned to the ducks. I guess I need to get it a mirror so it can know it is not a duck.

Man it sure is hot outside. Just went to check on the broodies and to my surprise, I hear babies! Don't know how many yet since mama was very protective and I can't lift her up to see. I know she has at least 8 eggs under her and the other broody mama also has at least a handful. I thought the broken eggs would have contaminated the rest of the eggs but guess I was wrong.

I was going to clean the coops and duck pool but it was just too hot so I'll wait till evening before I do anything.

Ralph, which one is the EE chick? I only saw ducklings.

Danz, it is great to know that the turkey hen is willing to raise baby chicks. I have only heard of hen raising baby poults. The picture was awesome.

Stay cool everyone.

Oh gosh I know my ducks like hanging around with the turkeys because they were raised with turkey poults, but I never thought of a chick wanting to stay with ducks. I hope it doesn't try to swim like them!

I had a sad morning, I went out to let my birds out & found my young Speckled Sussex pullet dead on the floor of the coop. She was missing last night when I put the chickens in for the night & she showed up right about dark. I put her in & she seemed fine then & went in to roost right away. It appeared from the way she was laying there that she had gone to sleep & just died in her sleep & was dead before she hit the floor. I love those Speckled Sussex & this one was special because she was the only baby I was able to keep from the trio I bred this spring & I don''t have the rooster now. She was just a beautiful bird like her momma. She wasn't even laying yet, so she was still young & I can't figure out what could have happened to her. I could find no injuries of any kind on her body or anything. It seems like I'm not supposed to have any Speckled Sussex. I had gotten those chicks from Tony Albritton & all of them died due to all of the rain, the mud, & the flash flood we had. So I just gave up on having any this year & now this. That leaves me the one hen in my laying flock, the other one got killed awhile back by a possum before the dogs got it & killed it. It just seems like it always something with these chickens.

I got a call this morning from a friend who has an elderly neighbor & he has a one year old Great Pyrenees he wants to re-home. I don't have a lot of specifics right now, but if anyone is interested I can try to find out some more info. The dog has been with goats & that's about all I know at this point. I can get contact info if anyone would like to know more or talk to the owner. It presently is living east of Arkansas City. I'll fill in details as I get them.

had to come to where its understood why i am so excited that test eggs are wiggling at lockdown --going to be a long 3 days!!!!

WELL.....4 of the 5 chicks are in the coop outside tonight, and they are not very happy....huddled near the door all together! They have never seen pine shaving either so I think that freaked them out! Wish me luck! I am trying to re-home the 2 roos now!

Frizzled congratulations. Sounds like a hatch is on the way. What are you hatching?
Ashncarson I am sure your chicks will be fine. I just moved a bunch out night before last and one of the turkey poults yelled all night.
I am very disturbed tonight.

I hadn't gone to check my second broody turkey today until this evening after I put the others up. I went to where she was nesting and she was gone and the eggs were cold. I feel awful for not checking earlier. Not that that would have helped. She was there at bedtime yesterday. I didn't like the spot she was in because she wasn't well protected but she wasn't out far. Both DH and myself had thought about taking her and her eggs and locking her up somewhere else. We should have done so. There was nothing alive in the eggs either so it was a total waste. It breaks my heart.
The other turkey hen is doing well with her chicken chicks. She is being a very good mother to them and although they don't seem to react as fast to her as they would a chicken they do run to her now. I heard some peeping in one of the incubators so one of her other eggs may have hatched. I'll let it dry tonight before checking. I don't think I had anything else due to hatch for a few more days.
Meanwhile the turkey house is going pretty good. We only have one more piece of metal to put on it and it will be done. Not that it is anything fancy...just an open ended metal building. I like it cause it didn't cost me any money to build. DH said since everything we used was already here he would buy a couple of corner pieces to close in the corners. He said it would be about $20.
Now the bad part is I figure it is going to cost me between $225 and $250 to buy the lumber to put the pen in.
I've got to get busy making cages in the next several days though. I have to have the birds to Gardner by 7:00AM next Friday. That doesn't leave me a lot of time.

Sharol, if your birds are getting on the roost that's more than some of mine are doing. I have the Lemon Cuckoo Orps in half of the hoop coop & they're getting pretty good sized but the still sit all bunched up in the corner on the brace at night instead of getting up on the roost they have. They're plenty big to get up there but they just don't. I have smaller, younger birds in my growout pen that do get up on the roost, so go figure.

Frizzled, I hope you hatch goes well, I have hatched hundreds of chicks in the last year & I still love seeing them hatch & there just isn't anything cuter than a fluffy little chick. It doesn't take them long after hatching to start really running around either. I have 3 different groups of chicks in my brooder now, but I hope to move the Barnevelder chicks out to the growout pen soon. I just need to finally figure out sexes of the Barred Rocks from Frank I have in there & move them out. I don't really want to put the smaller Barnies in there with the honking big BRs. They're still young, but they're getting pretty big now.

tweetybaby, I sent you a PM.
