Consolidated Kansas

I do not like cold weather, I am never ready for cold weather, I hate to wear shoes. I don't think the guineas like cold weather either, they are all in the chicken house tonight. The ducks did make it to the pond and since we didn't get home before dark they have decided to have a camp out. Hope the coyotes don't decide to crash their party. We got a bottle of Ivermec today so will start the worming process tomorrow.
Tweetybaby, tell your DH now is the time to be reading up on beekeeping and getting supplies, tools, etc bought. We always enjoy talking bees and will be happy to help get him started. He can email us at [email protected] if he wants to talk bees. The state beekeeping meeting is this weekend in Topeka, 2 days of talking bees with other crazy people that like stinging insects. :D Beekeeping is kinda expensive to get started, but once you get established, the cost is minimal. Danz, a couple of hives or so wouldn't take up that much more of your time. :D.
I am very frustrated right now because I have misplaced (probably still in a box) what I need to get my Kansas drivers license. I messed around and let my OK one expire and now I need like a zillion proofs of who I am. The thing that is worrying me the most is I am flying to Houston next week and I don't know if my expired license will cause a problem. aarghhh! I've got apples over flowing on the counters, need to find the time to get something done with them.
Danz, so sorry to hear about your Dad. Letting them go is very hard. I lost my Dad in 07, he had been diagnosed with cancer, so we were preparing to go down that journey. He lived in an assisted living place that had a nursing care facility attached. I remember him telling me that if you go there you never come back. Anyway about a month into his chemo and radiation he had a massive heart attack, but he still managed to hang on for two weeks. The nurse finally told me that I had to tell him that everything was going to be ok and that he didn't have to worry anymore. A day later, after a good visit with my sons and his sister, he passed on. It was tough and even if it was the right thing to do, I hated losing him. Still so many conversations I would love to have with him.
LizzyGSR glad you are getting some more rain, but PLEASE keep the freezing temperatures up there. Your dresser looks awesome, glad you are getting things organized. My mom made all the nursery stuff for my boys, she made one of those diaper stacker things. Gosh, that was a long time ago.
Ashncarson, we've got some birds about that size that we are trying to guess what sex they will be. Those two look a lot like FBCMs, but they are Cochins? How to tell the difference?
Ok, off to bed, tomorrow I empty every box that still has stuff in it.

I honestly don't know what to tell you. I was judging the pointed looking feathers on #2 as being a cockerel but that stance looks female. I guess you'll have to wait for a crow or an egg.

Hope the ducks are okay this morning. They are too slow to get away from a predator. At least they found the pond. I still haven't done anything with these extra boys around here. I really need to find the time and make some calls.

.
Just take your driver's license and a birth certificate with you. You should have no problem. You will probably have to take a test though. Or is the birth certificate part of the missing papers? I'd certainly take a back up form of ID if I were flying.
I lost my mother just a year and a half ago. This is all too soon for me to deal well with it. I thought I was going to loose him back in August but he rallied. This time I don't think he will.

It was 38 when I got up this morning. Burr. I went out and plugged in the oil heater in the brooder house last night and just set it on a low setting. I couldn't get my thermostat set to work just right. I need to work on that today cause it's too expensive to run all the time. It was just pretty darned chilly down near the floor. I told DH I need to put in heated floor cables. Wouldn't that be awesome for chicks?? Yeah right. I would have to start charging a couple hundred dollars each if I did that.
DH finally got the final panel in the turkey pen yesterday so I need to get out there and get the netting up and move the turkeys if I can today. Then I need to get the peachicks moved and situated in the old turkey pen. I don't know if I'll have time or not. I'm not rushing outside to get cold. I also need to run an extention cord out there to run the electricity to the peafowl pen. It won't be long I will need to heat water bowls and I will need to plug in a heat lamp for the peachicks for really cold nights.

I would usually prefer cold weather over hot weather - mainly because horses are more suited for cold weather than hot weather and when I'm outside for long periods of time, it is usually to do something with the horses. Plus, you can always add layers for the cold but there are only so many you can remove when it's hot, and I get a sunburn so easily that I pretty much always have to have long sleeves on when I'm outside in the summer. However, this year the cold seems to be coming as more of a shock than usual. I am NOT looking forward to freezing temperatures this year, especially with a newborn to worry about!

It was in the mid-20's when I got up this morning. There was a pretty good layer of ice on the smaller water bowls in the bird pen. It won't be long before I have to start running extension cords to power water heaters. Ugh! I'm NOT looking forward to that, and I"m not looking forward to having to worry about frozen hoses!

The nursery still isn't clean, but my husband did finally get the curtains hung. So, I have decided to post a picture! The plan was that the crib would have a blanket made of the same fabrics as the rest of the nursery. I was also planning on having some homemade decorations on the wall above the crib and in a couple other places around the nursery. However, those aren't done yet...

Also, here is a picture of me at 37 weeks, taken this past Sunday.

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree based on these pictures alone. I believe chick number 2 is a rooster. Can't really tell on chick # 3 but I would venture it is probably a pullet. Sorry. I may be wrong. It's much easier to tell in person.
It depends on what you want them tested for. If you mean NPIP tests I am certified but live a distance from you. You can contact the Kansas Dept of Agriculture and get a list of who is certified to do NPIP tests in your county. If you are talking about other tests the only way to get them done that I know of is to contact K-State lab and they could tell you how to have tests done. That would be very expensive and probably result in killing a bird. The state can do AI testing but that would be a flock test and you could be waiting for months to get an appointment.
You need NPIP tests to legally sell at swap meets although many don't do it. It's just a matter of time before this becomes enforced I'm afraid especially with the outbreak of salmonella from a couple hatcheries. You can sell eggs to friends and family but need to follow guidelines to sell them to the public. Here is a link: http://www.ksda.gov/includes/docume...d_Safety/egg_factsheet_farmersmarkets2006.pdf

Thanks Danz. Of course I can't find my bottle of goat wormer after the move! It is not in my bird's first aid box. Go figure! Grrrr... guess I'll have to go to the store this weekend to grab a bottle of it or the Ivermectin.

So sorry to hear that you dad is not doing so well... it is definitely hard to let go. My dad passed away very suddenly. I never had a chance to say goodbye. To top it off, it was 10 days after my surgery so I didn't even get to attend his funeral. It took me a long time to accept the fact that my dad is gone and I need to move on. I still tear up when I think about him but I tried to think about happy times I had with him. It makes it a tiny bit more bearable. I hope you get to spend more time with him. I'll keep you and your dad in my thoughts and prayers.
