They look like they're checking it out, did they eat
taking a look out the backdoor, it looks like they ate most of the green part! I just did a 20x6 tray for now to see how they liked it! I love having the green color this time of the year! This is wheat berries. I would like to try barley and boss as well to see what they do!

I have quite a bit of barley and I've been thinking about trying to grow some fodder as well. I did read some extensive stuff on it and it is recommended you don't grow very much green top or they can get it stuck in their crops and end up with sour crop and die. I figure I can grow it an inch or so high and feed just a little here and there. I've got lots of stuff around here I could use for fodder if I had the room to grow it.
I got the freezer defrosted finally and have it cooling back down. I realized we probably will have to let the new one set for at least 24 hours so I'm still going to be short on space for the frozen food for a couple days. It would be very tempting to just trust this stuff outside. I haven't checked the outside highs for the next couple days but I don't think it's supposed to get very warm at all.
I've been monitoring the temperature on the other freezer and I think the problems with it have to do with the auto defrost. I can't help but wonder if that were bypassed if the whole thing would be fine. I may do a little experimenting once it is empty and see what I can come up with.
Anyway thanks to these new projects I didn't get anything I wanted to done today.

They sell grass kits for indoor cats. all it is a small container, about the size of a small margarine tub, with peat moss and a package of oat seed. I grow my own in a 8"x 10" cake pan filled with potting soil. Maybe I should grow some for the chickens. I plan to rotate pens so that I can regrow grass. I have the material for more pens but don't seam to find the time to get it done. I have lived on this place since 1967 an worked a full time job and sometimes with overtime and no days off . It has to be old age because I just keep getting farther and farther behind since I retired 4 years ago.

I don't know Ralph I think you get busier being retired, it seems that way with a lot of people I know. You just find even more things to do that you didn't have time for before.

Michelleml- yeah that doesn't sound like a bad price. I'd love to get away from the gmo stuff. Too bad it's so far away, I haven't seen anything like that up here by KC,maybe I'll keep looking.
That cold front last night was wild ! It blew the top of our chimney up like the lid on a tin can. Not really the look we were going for. Ralph- that's the part I struggle with ,it's the responsible maintenance that I'm supposed to do that don't bring much joy vs the fun projects that I would rather do. Would much rather make improvements on the chicken coop then say, paint the barn.
Ashancarson- thanks for posting the fodder pics, that's the next thing I want to try but if I was going to be honest it'll probably will be next winter.

Anyone know the date of the spring Gardner auction?

KKB it's March 15th.

I have 5 little Speckled Sussex fuzzy butts so far, two hatched out yesterday evening & then there were 3 more in the hatcher this morning when I got up. I know there is one more pipping in there now. These are from the eggs that were lost for a week in the postal system, so I didn't figure any of them were going to hatch.

I have therapy today & it's just kind of depressing because I don't feel like I have progressed any as of yet. I still have quite a lot of pain where the bone is broken & now today my knee is hurting bad. I'm still waiting to hear when my MRI is.

I always thought that would be the perfect solution but have come to the conclusion you need really really big pens or really really few chickens for that to work. I can't even keep grass in the yard and there's about 4-5 acres here they roam on. Of course I have way more birds than most people even think about.
I know I have slowed down a lot but I have no spare time at all since I retired. I also keep adding work for myself. I really thought I would take it easy when I retired and finally catch up to do the things I enjoy. The problem is the things I enjoy have ended up becoming about three full time jobs!!!! I used to have what I called a retirement closet. Unfinished projects that I hadn't had time to do. Well guess what? They are still unfinished and there's tons more.

KKB, I think the Gardner Auction is March 15th.

Huh. My entire quote didn't appear. I think I was just going to hope you were all cured of the sickness.

I took the girls some of the fodder that has been growing!

zigzag, how is yours coming along?

I like this picture of your gorgeous birds checking out the goodies.

I know it's hard, by try not to be too discouraged. When I was in therapy for my shoulder and arm, there would be plateaus where I thought nothing was happening, and then one day I'd go in and there'd be a very noticeable difference. I did have nerve damage, though, which was a whole other issue. If there's any suspicion of nerve damage, an MRI won't show it. You have to go in for specific testing. If you and your therapist really think something more should be happening and isn't, it would be worth bringing it up to the doctor.
