Consolidated Kansas

Sharol good luck with your little hatch. Glad to see that there are some fertile eggs. I have one rogue hen and she is sitting on eggs. I should have removed them but I figured she'd just keep sitting. I really need to use the house she is using but I hate to move her when she has eggs under her. She's paired up with my one and only mixed breed rooster whom I intended to butcher. He's such sweet boy I think I'm going to have a problem doing it. I keep using the weather as an excuse.
I'm kind of waiting around today for the weather to warm up. I have so much to do out there today. Looks like it is going to be about the only decent day we have for a week or so.
I've got to get another bin set up for some new chicks that are hatching as we speak. I need to go buy another one somewhere but I have so much to do I don't want to take the time to go shopping.
Hopefully I have some people showing up for birds this weekend so I can finally move some more around. It seems I play musical pens all the time!

Hi all. New to the forum and to chickens. We don't have any yet! Anyone from Wyandotte County? I know many folks have chickens in the county, but I wondered if anyone knows the ordinances for the city?

Howdy warm weather! It is windy but boy is it warm outside. of course all my silly chickens and ducks hide inside the coop. When I first look outside the window and saw none of the chickens or ducks, I thought "oh no... did a predator show up and clean me out?". So I went to the coop quickly and found them all to hide inside the coop. Such silly birds. Not sure if they are afraid of the wind, the sun, both or they actually saw a predator some where. My GPs are napping out there under the tree and usually they will just bark or chase the predator, if any is close by. I threw a few handfuls of BOSS in the pen and the birds came running out, ate the seeds, then went back inside the coop. They sure are some interesting creatures.

Sharol, hopefully the 3 will hatch for Copper. Good backup plan though and sneaking in little chicks are easy at night. I did it once last year and all went well.

Speaking of roosters. I caged 2 extra mean roosters. They terrorized my hens to no end. Then there are 2 more that are mean as well so I put one in a small cage then let it out in the evening to stretch its legs because this cage is a lot smaller than the other 2. 1 just let run around because one of the very nice rooster will go and kick its butt when this mean one gets aggressive. Come this weekend they will be going to the freezer camp. I did promise 2 for my friend so there will be 2 for my freezer camp and 2 for her. I refuse to put up with mean roosters. I have 2 that are really nice and gentle so those get special treatments from me like the occassional treats and what not. The mean ones will be dinner. I don't think I'll be able to process the nice ones.

Danz... good luck to your hatch. Hope it's a good one.

girlonaharley - welcome! Is Wyandotte county close to Kansas City? You can call the city office to find out the ordinance for chicken. What kind of chicken are you looking for? Do you currently have any chickens? Tell us more about your plan and we have great people on the forum to help you out. Ask your questions away. Danz, Trish, and quite a few others are quite knowledgeable.

It's supposed to be 60 today, but tomorrow is supposed to be even nicer at 72. After that we have some 50 degree days next weekend. I'll be glad when it stays a bit warmer. I can't complain about 50 too much after the winter we had, but it would be nice to have the 60s & 70s consistently. I'll be glad when the nights don't get so cold as well so I can pick up my heated waterers.

Danz good luck on your hatch tomorrow

, I hope they all hatch for you. Wish me luck as well especially with the Barnevelder eggs, I hope I get a good hatch & quite a few blues. Of course I won't be able to tell the blues till they start feathering out.

Have a good day everyone!

Trish, how's your hatch? Good news I hope. I bet you like this weather much better. I do too! Just too bad I'm inside working. I am actually staring at the bit tiller behind the tractor thinking if I could just till up the land myself so I can get it all prepped for my seedlings come end of April. But I think it's best to leave it up to my husband. Certainly don't want to end up back in the hospital. Speaking of that... my Dr came by the other day to get eggs from me. For some reason I had this strange flash back of the surgery and I could hardly greet him and talk to him. Hopefully it is just temporary. He is a nice gentleman and an excellent surgeon after all.

Enjoy the day! 40s and low 50s are back next week... sigh...

Welcome to our group. I know different areas have different ordinances and also if you are in an HOA there could be some different rules as well. Call your local city hall or even call animal control. They would know as well. If you have an HOA check with them.

Well I spent a good deal of my day setting up for more chicks today. I had a really big hatch. The problem is now I'm confused as to what is what. I had some BBS Jersey Giant eggs given to me and hatched those, some black orpingtons, and some others that all look an awful lot alike.
I also hatched my very first English Orpington chick!!!

Now to keep it separate from the Jersey Giants!
I wasn't going to keep the giants but I may have to now for awhile until I can guarantee they aren't something else.
In my process as well since I have both my gold partridge and blue partridge brahmas in one pen I produced a bunch of blue brahmas. I was really hoping to just get one now and then but out of at least a half dozen eggs I only had one partridge hatch. That means ultimately I am going to have to split my pen by color to keep the blue gold partridge. I have orders for chicks so I have to have them and in the right color. Darn it. That is one more pen to set up I wasn't planning on.
I'm really going to have to start hatching different breeds on different days. I just have too many chicks who are coming out similar. Some of my whites look like lavenders so that becomes a problem as well.
I worked very hard today and am totally exhausted. I'm ready to call it a night.

Lots of folks in wyco have chickens, some roos as well, specially down near 10th/central and into downtown. I have friend out in western wyc, bonner springs..etc that keep them as well. I am in Olathe, legal for 5, and in HOA as well.

Welcome to the forum!

Still down at the beach, and havin a blast!

Welcome, we have people from all over the state on this forum. I'm sure someone can help you out or tell you who to check with.

Well the hatch is still ongoing, so I'll let you know when it finally gets done. This one is stretching out way longer than the others have, hurry up little chicks!

Just found this. Anybody on here from Saline or Dickinson counties?
Welcome, I'm sure we have someone up your way, we have people all over the state. Do you have chickens already?

We have had chickens for the last couple of years, however I sold all of my flock recently in order to make room for the new breeds I am bringing in. I am going with strictly heritage breeds to go along with my heirloom gardening. This is the niche I am going into with my business, "Obermeyer Heritage Farms." I help people get into gardening and be more self sufficient. I will also sell vegetables and eggs. In the future we plan to expand our vegetables, offer fruit, and expand into beef and pork. We are starting small due to not having our own land right now but praying God will give it to us at the right time.

That sounds wonderful, what Heritage breeds of chickens are you planning to raise? I'm just getting started in Heritage Barred Rocks & Rhode Island Reds. I have a lot of other breeds though that are more rare that I raise.
